Category: open source — 'open source' means the computer code that runs the software program is 'open' for people to look at and tweak or add features to.
The 'open source movement', founded in the late 1990s, was formed as part of a marketing campaign for free software. It emphasized the economic and technical benefits of open source code and open development, but with little or no care about the ethical (or legal) aspects. There is, however, very little software acknowledged by the Open Source Initiative that is not also free software, hence the term FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) is often used.
