A Wiki Engine is the server-side software powering a wiki website. There are many different wiki engines out there, all implementing roughly the same idea, but it a mirriad of different ways, in different programming languages, and adding different features.
Most are free and open source, but wikis have also started to go commercial. To see how various wiki engine developments are (or were) interrelated, see WikiEngineTree
