You may still include this parameter even if you are unsure on how to calculate the above wikiFactor value – as it will allow other WikiIndex editors to assist in calculating the correct wikiFactor value for you.

How to get size information

Many wiki engines provide wiki site statistics somewhere, which includes a page count. Here is how to find them for various wiki engines; although it can also depend on the software version of the wiki engine being run by the said wiki. For some, simply click on the appropriate 'statistics' link; for others, you need to add (or replace) a specific text at the end of the relevant wiki URL in the address bar of your web browser.

  1. MediaWiki — add /Special:Statistics at the end of the URL – http://YourWikiURL.org/Special:Statistics (non-English language versions will automatically convert this to actual language). Dependent on software version, there is a number called "Content pages", or "pages that are probably legitimate content pages" -- use that lower number. Ignore the (often much larger) "all pages in the wiki, including redirects" number. We can also add MediaWiki listings to the http://s23.org/wikistats/mediawikis_html.php system which tracks various wiki stats.
  2. Wikimedia Foundation — ???
  3. Wikia — is usually found somewhere prominent near the top of the main page; more detailed info (along with backup file link) can be found at http://YourWikiName.wikia.com/Special:Statistics
  4. MoinMoin — add either /SystemInfo or /PageSize at the end of the URL – http://YourWikiURL.org/SystemInfo or http://YourWikiURL.org/PageSize
  5. UseModWiki — add /?action=index at the end of the URL – http://YourWikiURL.org/?action=index
  6. Pbwiki — replace any page name with /AllPages – http://YourWikiURL.org/AllPages
  7. PhpWiki — an option: Search for letter "e" in all Titles (Is there a better way?)
  8. ProWiki — add /?action=spx at the end of the URL – http://YourWikiURL.org/?action=spx
  9. PmWiki — use / in the search box then scroll to the bottom (maybe searching for Site/ or Main/ would be better); an alternative way: add /index.php/Site/Search?q=/ at the end of the URL – eg. http://YourWikiURL.org/index.php/Site/Search?q=/
  10. TikiWiki — replace ending /tiki-lastchanges.php with either /tiki-stats.php or /tiki-listpages.php
  11. TWiki — add /WebIndex at the end of the URL – http://YourWikiURL.org/WebIndex
  12. Oddmuse — in RecentChanges click on 1 day and replace ?action=rc;days=1;all=0;showedit=0 with ?action=index
  13. Wikispaces — replace /changes ending the recent changes url with /pagelist
  14. Bitweaver — add /list_pages.php at the end of the URL – http://YourWikiURL.org/wiki/list_pages.php
  15. DokuWiki — ???
  16. JSPWiki — add Wiki.jsp%3Fpage=SystemInfo.html at the end of the root URL – http://YourWikiURL.org/Wiki.jsp%3Fpage=SystemInfo.html (doesn't work on all sites).

How to calculate the wikiFactor of a site

The wikiFactor (wF) is a measure of the 'popularity' of a wiki-site. It is based on the Hirsch h-index, which is commonly used to measure the impact a scientist has had in the literature. The wikiFactor complements the number of pages and total number of visits information. More details can be found in the preprint 'wikiFactor: a measure of the importance of a wiki site'.

The wikiFactor is simply the number of pages in the wiki (wF) that have had more than 1000 times wF visits.

Example

A wikiFactor (wF) of, say, 20 – means that page number 20 in the ranking list of pages visited has received 20,000 or more visits, whereas page 21 has not yet reached 21,000 visits. Here is a worked example – for WikiIndex from September 2012:

If one counts the entries with views > 1000*p (highlighted in light green) – one arrives at a wikiFactor (wF) of 20 for WikiIndex (correct as of September 2012).

Where to look

Many wiki engines (though not all) provide global statistics. Here is how to find the appropriate wikiFactor related stats for various wiki engines (although it can also depend on software version used by individual wiki sites)

  1. MediaWiki — go to the /Special:PopularPages page of the wiki – http://YourWikiURL.org/Special:PopularPages
  1. Wikimedia Foundation — /Special:PopularPages has been unavailable for some time. The 'Top' sites option at stats.grok.se can be used for Wikipedias, but needs to be summed on a per-month basis.
  2. Wikia — originally, this info could be accessed at Special:Mostvisitedpages – http://YourWikiName.wikia.com/Special:Mostvisitedpages, although from September 2011 this tool was removed, and no similar page counter existed for Wikia sites. Sometime in mid-2012, Wikia reinstated /Special:Mostvisitedpages, so this feature became active again. By mid-March 2013 it had gone again, on the Community Central and at least one big wiki. There is now no Special:PopularPages; it was replaced by Special:Top/most_visited, which was deprecated in favour of Special:Insights/popularpages.
  3. MoinMoin — add /PageHits at the end of the URL – http://YourWikiURL.org/wiki/PageHits

  12. Wikispaces — go to Manage Wiki on the left-hand-side of the page, then click on the Tools: Wiki Statistics icon. Shift from the overview tab to the pages tab, then click on Views.
  13. Bitweaver — add /rankings.php at the end of the URL – http://YourWikiURL.org/wiki/rankings.php. In the 'Select Attribute' drop-down list, choose 'Most Often Viewed', and from the 'Number of items', select the most appropriate option from the drop-down list.
  14. DokuWiki —
  15. ShoutWiki — /Special:PopularPages and /Special:Mostvisitedpages both don't exist
  16. WikiFree — Special:PopularPages is enabled on-request
Google Analytics

If your wiki site uses Google Analytics, you can go to 'Content/Top Content' and select the entire date range to get a count of page views for each page. If you started using Analytics partway through, and stopped collecting your wiki engine's standard statistics at the same time, you may be able to merge the two numbers.
