Template:WikiProjectTemplate:TOCright Wiki-Noding is an important project that will ultimately allow users to discover entire wiki worlds by traversing the node network. See WikiNodes Wiki for more info.

We think every wiki needs a page (called "WikiNode") that briefly describes the wiki and the top 7 or so closely related wikis. Why do you want a WikiNode on your wiki?

  • It gives you a third choice: rather than letting off-topic pages accumulate (taking your wiki in a direction you don't want it to go), or deleting not-quite-on-topic pages (angering your users), you can move such a page to some other wiki where it is more on-topic.
  • Sometimes people write wonderful articles that you would love to have on your wiki. But because those people didn't know about your wiki, they post their article on some other wiki, where it is not-quite-on-topic. The WikiNode network helps that person (or some other person at that wiki) find out about your wiki and move that article to your wiki -- rather than letting that wonderful article be deleted and lost forever.

current state of project Wiki-Noding

We can create boilerplate WikiNodes for the various engines, then visit each wiki from that engine and drop in the boilerplate on a page called WikiNode.

The second step, which we do not do, is to add a link from WikiIndex to the WikiNode in question. We don't do it because the boilerplate isn't useful as a WikiNode yet, until that community takes on the editing of the page. They can come to WikiIndex and link from their page to their own WikiNode once they've taken over it's care.

      • Amongst several issues, this brings up how to link back to WikiIndex. If we include a pointer back to our Wiki-Node, does that mean that we have to include them in our neighbor listing? Or should we just link back to the project? If we don't know of other wikis that would be included on the wiki node, should we hold off on creating one for a wiki? or not? Best, MarkDilley | talk

I don't understand either of these 2 pages:

Do they have a purpose, or were they accidentally created? --DavidCary 13:09, 3 March 2009 (EST)

David, it looks like Sean and Smiddle were trying to do something, but I can't figure it out either. MarkDilley
also here is the Archive.org link for the site
Looks like these were made for putting a WikiNode link in the sidebar. --59.154.2.59 18:11, 19 May 2009 (EDT)
I agree with 59.154.2.59. We can find that they are used in MediaWiki:Sidebar --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 20:46, 29 March 2013 (PDT)
