The Shetland Isles (a collection or archipelago of about 100 islands), along with the Orkney Isles, are both collectively known as the 'Northern Isles', and lie in the North Sea off the northern coast of Scotland, part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Lerwick, the capital of Shetland, is closer to Norway than it is to London!
