What is TMS?
TMS stands for Tension Myositis Syndrome, a term coined by Dr. John Sarno, Professor of Clinical Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University School of Medicine, and attending physician at the Howard A. Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University Medical Center. Dr. Sarno created this term to describe a cohort of his patients who presented with severe and incurable pain (often back pain), which he discovered to be truly psychosomatic, or mind body disorders. Dr. Sarno and his colleagues have since helped countless people recover from debilitating pain that had formerly ruled their lives. To learn more, you may want to watch this abcnews 20/20 segment on Sarno (14 minutes long).
