Category:Wiki age: Difference between revisions

Category: Wiki age — this is the root or 'parent' category for categorization of wikis by their age here on WikiIndex. It contains categories of periods in time for the founding date of when wiki sites, wiki engines, wiki farms, and wiki companies, et cetera, came into existence.

To determine the age of a wiki:

1. The founder of a wiki probably knows (or should know) its age.
2. If the wiki site is powered by MediaWiki software, there are a number of ways to look (ideally, use as many of the listed methods to accurately verify its date of founding):
   1. Go to the 'Oldest pages' at /Special:AncientPages for the wiki site, look at the date of the first listed article (note that this feature lists pages that have not been edited in a long time, not necessarily the oldest pages overall);
   2. Check the oldest edit of its main page, e.g. https://YourWikiURL.org/w/index.php?title=Main_Page&dir=prev&action=history;
   3. Find the date for 'MediaWiki default' at /Special:Contributions/MediaWiki_default made its first contribution;
   4. View history for a system message (as found in the 'MediaWiki' namespace; search in Special:PrefixIndex), and check when 'MediaWiki default' first edited it.
3. For Wikia wikis (now branded as Fandom), the exact date of founding used to be at /Special:WikiStats, however, this function is now globally disabled; therefore, the above methods for MediaWiki should work:
   1. Wikia 'MediaWiki default' is found at /Special:Contributions/Default.

For all other wikis powered any of the other wiki engines, aside from asking the founder, the oldest entry in the edit history of its main or front page should be a reliable guide.
