Description[edit]

The genesis of this database was as a repository for genealogical information that is not of sufficient encyclopedic interest to be an integral part of Wikipedia.

There are multiple facets to this site. It captures details on individuals — both historically significant people and the everyday people usually not listed in encyclopedias, histories, or even "people's histories" — as well as providing other information, such as:

  • documentation for family trees and quick links to recorded ancestors, siblings, and descendants
  • backgrounds, meanings, and distribution of names
  • county-specific pages and categories fully covering several English-speaking countries, and scope for all countries
  • relationships that often determine who people are, eg:
    • monarchs
    • the chain of Sufi initiation
    • other titleholders.

This site aspires to be truly global, with active contributors and information from multiple cultures and regions over four Hemispheres.

Mostly in English, but with dozens of pages in French, even more in Dutch, and easy ways of linking between languages.

From May 2009, introduced Semantic MediaWiki for improved data entry, searching, and display.

Switched to CC-BY-SA in June 2009 along with most of Wikia and Wikimedia.
