Description[edit]

WikiTimeScale was a 2006 established wiki whose purpose was to graphically illustrate the events of history in a clear and good arranged way. Originally located at www.WikiTimeScale.com,[1] it was subsequently moved to a 'dot org' top level domain (TLD) at www.WikiTimeScale.org.

Created by Markus Szumovski of Enzesfeld, Austria, WikiTimeScale was not using any tables, or some kind of HTML / XML tags to display the events, but was instead creating images which were much more compact, can be fitted to any screen width, and can even be saved on the hard-disc, for a presentation or for another homepage. The events were displayed as timelines in the graphic, and there was a date-reference line at the top and bottom of the graphic. The system was interactive, so nobody was bound to any date or time-period. The user was able to watch only a few days in history, as well as several thousand years.

The graphic images created by WikiTimeScale could be used as wished, as long as the copyright of the images was clearly pointed out (for example by keeping the Copyright message created by WikiTimeScale, in the image). Everyone could take part in this project, and the source code was put under the terms of the GNU GPL, so that means it was open source.

Engine[edit]

WikiTimeScale was using it's own engine, compiled in PHP.[2] It's then current version was released on 24 September,[clarify please] and was called WikiTimeScale TwoZero. It had many new features, including a Wikipedian-like URL reference. For example, the link http://www.WikiTimeScale.org/wiki/Imperium_Romanum will directly link to the Roman Empire entry. The engine was open source, and could be used and changed by anyone (under the terms of the GNU General Public License). Since WikiTimeScale TwoZero, there was also an easy setup wizard (the page setup.php in the unzipped source-code directory) to install the WikiTimeScale engine on your web server.

Multilingual[edit]

Since its beginning, WikiTimeScale was avaliable in German and English.[1] In November 2006, a Chinese interface had been set up too, and finaly there was a Dutch version of the interface in work.

Defunct[edit]

As of early 2013, the WikiTimeScale wiki and wiki engine are both defunct, with no obvious archive. Portions of the 'TimeScale' are still available at the WikiTimeLine article on the ChaosReligion wiki.
