Officially the Federal Republic of Germany (de: Bundesrepublik Deutschland), but commonly known simply as Germany (de: Deutschland), it is major country in central Europe, and identified by its ISO 3166-1 country code DE. Germany is geographically (and also politically) sub-divided into sixteen (16) federal states, known in German as Land when describing a single state, and Länder for plural usage. Its country code top-level domain identifier (for internet use) is .de. A federal parliamentary republic, Germany is situated within continental Europe; having northern maritime borders with the Baltic Sea and North Sea, and land borders with Denmark to its north, Poland and the Czech Republic to its east, Austria and Switzerland to its south, and France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands to its west. The capital city (and also largest city by population) is Berlin (previously an enclave within the former East Germany or German Democratic Republic), with the city of Frankfurt being the financial centre of Germany. Its currency is the euro (€), replacing its former Deutsch Mark (DM).

Regarding international relations, the Federal Republic of Germany was a founding member of the European Economic Community (EEC) since March 1957 (as West Germany), and a founding member of its successor, the politico and economic European Union (EU) in November 1993. It is a full member state of the United Nations (UN) since September 1973 (as West Germany), a subsequent member of the European governmental and legal alliance the Council of Europe (CoE) (from July 1950 as West Germany, and from 1990 for the former East Germany following reunification), a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC) since December 1998, members of the inter-governmental Group of Seven (G7) and Group of Twenty (G20) political forum. It is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) since May 1992, and a founding member (as West Germany) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) signed in December 1960. It is also a founder member state of the World Trade Organization (WTO) from January 1995. Germany is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) military alliance (from May 1955 as West Germany, from 1990 following full reunification), one of the founder members of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) since June 1973 (as West Germany), a member of the International Criminal Police Organization (ICPO, or Interpol) since June 1956 (as West Germany), and one of the founding members of the European Space Agency (ESA) since July 1977 (as West Germany).
