It was founded by Wikipedia co-founder [[Larry Sanger]] in 2006 to remedy what he viewed as problems with Wikipedia.  The site requires the use of verifiable {{tag|RealNamesNetwork|RealNames}} and academic credentials.


Citizendium has an organized hierarchy: Authors are anyone with an approved account, while Editors are contributors whose demonstrated expertise in their field is officially recognized by the Citizendium.  "Constables" play the role of administrators.

Larry Sanger became largely inactive in the project after 2010, and it has since had three-to-four different primary [[editor]]s.  In 2020, Larry Sanger transferred ownership of the domain to the current primary editor.
