Welcome[edit]

Oliver, we are trying out using article namespace for names, and user talk pages for message. Nice to have you here, Best, MarkDilley

Added your question to WikiIndex:Frequently asked questions - Where is the rss feed?

Proposal to the WikiIndex community[edit]

Mark, I would like to make the same proposal as the one in WorldWideWiki, but it seems that it is not possible to transclude anything into MediaWiki... (or to include HTML/Iframe). An other question is: Where is the rss feed? of WikiIndex. OlivierAuber 10:44, 22 Jan 2006 (EST)

Oliver, If you go to recent changes, you will see an RSS link on the left hand menu. Neat stuff you're doing too! --Ray 12:00, 22 Jan 2006 (EST)

Thanks Ray, but it seems that something is broken:

Erreur d'analyse XML : instruction de traitement XML pas au début d'une entité externe Emplacement : https://WikiIndex.org/index.php?title=Special:Recentchanges&feed=rss Numéro de ligne 2, Colonne 1 :<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

Do you have an idea about the transclude in Mediawiki? OlivierAuber 13:37, 22 Jan 2006 (EST)

Placing your questions on the WikiIndex:Frequently asked questions - Best, MarkDilley

Thanks Mark. Please let me know when the RSS feed runs again

Caricature[edit]

Oliver, we're doing caricatures for wiki people we know and would be very happy to do one for you if you wish. Just upload or send me a pic and I'll have it done --Raymond King | talk 03:09, 4 Feb 2006 (EST)

Thnks Ray! Is this ok? OlivierAuber 06:23, 6 Feb 2006 (EST)

Yipes, that's just a little small and might be tough for the caricaturist to do, do you have something larger? --Raymond King | talk 13:13, 6 Feb 2006 (EST)

Thanks again Ray, your caricatures are really funny. A very good idea tu humanize this wiki and others!--OlivierAuber 12:11, 13 Feb 2006 (EST)

Glad you like them :-) --Raymond King | talk 12:52, 13 Feb 2006 (EST)

WikiNode[edit]

Transclusion in MediaWiki software[edit]

If you want to use something in the template namespace, you just use a double pair of curly brackets (e.g. {{Example}} for Template:Example). If it is some text somewhere else in the wiki, you have to provide the whole path. For example, on the Wikipedia, many of the editors who great new editors, instead of using the default welcome template, will create a custom welcome as a subpage of their user page. If the subpage is [[User:Example/welcome]], then you would transclude the custom welcome by typing {{User:Example/welcome}}.

Does that answer your question about transclusion in MediaWiki software? Since I do not always visit the WikiIndex everyday, you might also leave a message at User talk:BlankVerse. User:BlankVerse | talk 21:45, 29 Mar 2006 (EST)

The wikipedia dispute on transclusion / templates you linked to is really a two-fold dispute, that is also mixed in with problems with some difficult personalities. One part of it is that there are some noticeable server cost to using transclusion, which can be greatly magnified with very popular templates, and / or template nesting. AFAIK this is really only a problem with large, very heavily edited wikis (with vandalism exasperating the problem), which means that it probably only impacts the Wikimedia projects and no other wikis.
The second part of the transclusion / template problem is that there is no logic coding currently built into templates in the MediaWiki software, so that there have been a number of different kludges that have been created to provide for some if / then logic in templates. The kludges involve either the performance hit from nested templates, or using CSS that will break text-based web browser and accessibility software for the visually-impaired. Both solutions also break easily with any changes, and are mostly unintelligible to non-cognoscenti. Especially the people who designed or regular use those "solutions", refuse to acknowledge that there are any problems with them. The best way to go about things IMHO is to create less "universal" templates that don't require any logic coding.
As for external transclusion, I know that many websites will try to prevent any use of elements from their websites (especially graphics files) by other websites. For external transclusion into MediaWiki software-based wikis, I've seen at least one wiki that allowed referencing external graphics (sorry, don't remember which one), and all of the Wikimedia projects use the Wikimedia Commons as a semi-external datafile repository.
