Gitit is a wiki engine backed by a git, mercurial, or darcs filestore which uses Revision Control System (RCS). Pages and uploaded files can be modified either directly via the VCS's command-line tools, or through the wiki's web interface. Pandoc is used for markup processing, so pages may be written in (extended) markdown, reStructuredText, LaTeX, HTML, or literate Haskell, and, a GreatFeature, can be exported in ten different formats, including LaTeX, ConTeXt, DocBook, RTF, OpenOffice ODT, and MediaWiki markup. However, as can be seen on the WikiMatrix site, gitit has fairly limited 'wiki' functions when compared with say MediaWiki.

The Gitit wiki is a place to discuss the Gitit wiki engine and (since it runs on Gitit itself) to demonstrate its capabilities.

Building a wiki on top of a distributed version control system -- like Gitit does -- may be good way to build a fault-tolerant, high-availability wiki.
