(As of: 05 January 2012) Citizendium aims to gather knowledge more effectively than Wikipedia, and aims at quality as well as quantity.
It was founded by Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger in 2006 to remedy what he viewed as problems with Wikipedia. The site requires the use of verifiable RealNames and academic credentials. Initially, the community considered forking the English Wikipedia but decided against it.
Citizendium has an organized hierarchy: Authors are anyone with an approved account, while Editors are contributors whose demonstrated expertise in their field is officially recognized by the Citizendium. "Constables" play the role of administrators.
The site has Approved Articles which pass a process of review. Several of the most extensive articles are on homeopathy and alternative medicine.
