The wiki forked off from Nukapedia, when FANDOM decided to temporarily ban two of the Nukapedia administrators without warning in April 2022, for reasons that many in the community considered unjust and unprecedented at the time. Soon after, multiple editors started to discuss leaving the platform. Several options were considered, including moving to another third-party-host such as Miraheze, but ultimately it was decided to go fully independent. On April 7, 2022, the Discord, then called "Project Shmodex", was created. On April 8, 2022, the Independent Fallout Wiki was officially founded by Kid Aces and Eckserah.
