Semantic MediaWiki (SMW) is the official homepage and wiki site for Semantic-MediaWiki.org. Semantic MediaWiki, founded in Germany by Klaus Lassleben, Markus Krötzsch, Denny Vrandecic, S Page, and others, is a free open source semantic plug-in extension for the MediaWiki wiki engine that enables users to add semantic (or 'structured') data to wiki sites. This data can then be used for better searching, browsing, and exchanging of information. Among many other sites, Semantic MediaWiki also powers SemanticWeb.org. Current information about Semantic MediaWiki can be found on the Semantic-MediaWiki.org wiki site, which also contains the complete user documentation. Semantic MediaWiki is part of the greater Semantic Web project.
The Semantic-MediaWiki.org wiki site has content available in a number of languages; primarily: English and German, together with Arabic, Bengali, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Dutch, French, Greek, Japanese, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian – though it should be noted that these languages are not sub-domains of the primary SMW wiki site (like is found say on Wikipedia).
For a list of wikis here on WikiIndex which are powered by Semantic MediaWiki software, see category:Semantic MediaWiki. Also, Semantic MediaWiki maintains used to maintain its own list here, however this is now maintained at the Referata site – Semantic MediaWiki Community Wiki, found here.
- SMW Conference
Since 2008, Semantic-MediaWiki.org organised twice-yearly (biannual) conferences, in a similar vein to Wikimania, under the SMWCon name (full name 'Semantic MediaWiki Conference'); originally, the Spring events were held in North America, and the Autumn are held in Europe (typically the United States and Germany). From 2016, the event in North America was renamed to the Enterprise MediaWiki conference (EMWCon); meaning that SMWCon is now merely an annual event.
