A user is anyone who edits, develops, or merely only reads a wiki. In the case of Wikipedia, there are many users who only read the encyclopedia but do not participate in creating content. In closed wikis, readers may be required to be editors. In a restricted editing wiki, such as Scholarpedia, it is assumed that there will be many more readers than editors – but all are users.

In the case of MediaWiki wikis, 'users' are classed as a usergroup, typically being the entry-level, but fundamental core group of people on the wiki.
