Combined with the collaborative abilities of a [[WhatIsWiki|wiki]], a site hosted on Referata can serve as a true user-powered database, with a minimal amount of setup work or technical knowledge. Referata wikis can be public or private, open or closed. Public wikis can be set up and run at no charge but have a limit of 100 MB file storage. There are three more paid service levels at 20, 50 and 80 USD/month.
 
As of November 2016, the Referata developers and other staff appear to have at least partially abandoned the home "Meta" website. The feature requests page has dozens of requests that have been ignored, and the recent changes list is mostly full of account creations. It seems like the site has become just a dormant host for individual wikis.
