The '''GNU Free Documentation License''' ('''GFDL''', '''GNU FDL''') is a {{tag|copyleft}} free content [[:Category:License|license]] that is frequently used on many [[:Category:All|wiki]] websites for [[:Category:Wiki License|licensing]] their contents therin.  It was designed by the [https://www.FSF.org Free Software Foundation] especially for documentation of [[:Category:Software|software]], and is one of the oldest [[:Category:Free content|free-content]] licenses.  The specialisation on software documentation brings about some problems when used for other sorts of content; see article [[GFDL concerns]] for more information.

The most notable user of the GFDL: the [[:Category:Wikipedia|Wikipedia]] project, and its sister projects of the [[:Category:Wikimedia Foundation|Wikimedia Foundation]] (WMF), moved from licensing their contents under GFDL to a [[wp:Wikipedia:Licensing update|double licensing scheme]] with the comparable [[:Category:Wiki Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike|Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license]], when the GFDL granted the one-time chance to migrate content to this [[:Category:Wiki Creative Commons|Creative Commons]] license in 2009.
