The mediawiki default for internal links to pages that don't exist is to have the text be red. This is different from usemod, for example (with the question mark). If we could somehow have these external wikilinks show up as redlinks or question marks (same as internal links for that user), then I'd be in favor of this. Until then, I think it's confusing to have an external link that doesn't go to an active page and that looks the same as any other external link.
