Ratchetpedia is an independent wiki focusing on the Ratchet & Clank video game series, developed by Insomniac Games and High Impact Games. The site was founded by Sove and UxieLover1994 on March 31, 2012. Its current goal is to reach 1,000 articles that are deemed by the wiki's staff to be "complete," as well as to "perfect" its templates and develop its own custom skin. It aims to become the best English source of Ratchet & Clank information in the world.
The idea for Ratchetpedia came to UxieLover1994 around October 2011 while he was editing the now-defunct Spyropedia, and after several months of working with Sove — a friend of UxieLover1994 — the site finally came into existence. In addition to being an administrator on Ratchetpedia, Uxie also serves as its only active contributor, due in large part to the wiki being overshadowed by the more-developed, Sony-endorsed Ratchet & Clank wiki, a wiki in which Uxie is currently attempting to a start a "bitter rivalry" with.
As of June 25, 2012, Ratchetpedia has experienced slight downtime and has restricted its editing and account creation to previously-registered users. There has been no word for when it intends to come out of read-only mode.
Differences in style between Ratchetpedia and Ratchet & Clank wiki
- Ratchetpedia uses present tense. Ratchet & Clank wiki uses past tense, like most sci-fi wikis.
- Ratchetpedia allows broken English and grammar in its articles to provide a more "friendly" atmosphere for casual users. Ratchet & Clank wiki uses formal English and provides translation for seven other languages, including Norwegian, Spanish, German, Dutch, Finnish, French, and Portuguese.
- Ratchetpedia uses templates with materials borrowed from several other wikis. Ratchet & Clank wiki uses the default templates.
- Ratchetpedia's articles are restricted to only topics that the administrators deem worthy of inclusion. Ratchet & Clank wiki has taken a wider scope, allowing articles for any topic related to the Ratchet & Clank series.
- Voice actors are given their own articles on Ratchet & Clank wiki. Ratchetpedia instead chooses to link to Wikipedia or even unrelated wikis, such as Bulbapedia, for voice actors.
- Character articles use the characters' real names on Ratchet & Clank wiki. Ratchetpedia instead goes by the names that the administrators best recognize.
- Ratchetpedia has a strict spoiler policy and its admins always limit the information and content of the articles to ensure that no spoilers are posted. Ratchet & Clank wiki's articles are more comprehensive and will feature spoilers when necessary, leading UxieLover1994 to criticize Ratchet & Clank wiki as being "poorly-written."
Due to these differences, Ratchetpedia founder UxieLover1994 ranks Ratchetpedia as "fair," whereas he deems Ratchet & Clank wiki as being "unfair." Ratchetpedia tends to use an editing style similar to that of both the defunct Spyropedia and Kingdom Hearts Wiki. It aspires to be unique, hopefully with its own unique templates and skin at some point in the future. The site is a strong follower of the IWAs and even wishes to be accepted among the IWA one day. Ratchetpedia has claimed that it will be very happy to affiliate with any wiki that's independent, no matter what size or topic, but will always deny a site that's affiliated with any wiki farms.
