Another suggestion

Maybe one for the graphic designers, what about something completely different. My thoughts are that the icon should be something like a 'card index box' or similar, with the 'WikiIndex' logo on the front of the box — being as this site is an index of wikis. The current 'keys' suggest that we can somehow 'unlock' other wiki sites - which could be misleading. The old-skool Windows 3.1 card-box icon would be something like what I am thinking of. Although not a professional, I did study graphic design :-) Ray King hired a graphic designer who created what is the 'challenger.' These are the ideas we had 5 years ago WikiIndex:LogoOptions. WikiIndex was conceived to be more like a train switching station and was called SwitchWiki for the first several years of its life. RayKing and JohnStanton thought that WikiIndex was clearer. For me the lost of verb action is something I miss here. We are indeed an index of wiki. I think we can be more. :-) Keys denote unlocking self-organized knowledge - the best kind of knowledge! </nowiki></long winded typing!></nowiki>. Certainly the conversation is open! Best, MarkDilley
I did stumble upon WikiIndex:LogoOptions - and with the exception of the library card index one, most appeared way too abstract, and all would not work as a 'favicon' (IMHO). I personally think you ought to set down some ground rules specifically regarding the favicon - in that do you want one or not? I personally think that favicons are the way forward, especially with tabbed browsing from modern web browsers. If you do want a favicon - then it doesn't necessarily need to be scaled down facsimilie of the main logo - if you care to look at the actual Goatopedia wiki site, you'll see that the main logo includes a goat with a beret over the RAF roundel, but the favicon is just the roundel (with a miniscule goatopedia name!). The other consideration is to consider what exactly is WikiIndex now, and what do you wish for it to become? Whatever the future, you don't really want the logo to be too cryptic - especially if you have any future desires for any commercial aspects - such as advertsing etc. And one final point to consider - 'accessibility' - we need to be mindful that not everyone has the IQ of Einstine <sp?> (or my level of attrocious spelling !!) - there may be people with limited intelligence, who rely on looking at pictures . . . anyway, ramble over :), rgds, Hoof Hearted 12:24, 21 June 2011 (PDT)
