wikIran was a web-based collaborative project to produce a free specialized encyclopedia in the English-language covering all areas of Iranian history, civilization, and peoples, as well as related topics. The term "Iran" in the context of this encyclopedia project does not only refer to the modern nation-state of "Iran" but also to the entire Iranian-speaking world, which also includes Afghanistan, Kurdistan, Tajikistan, Ossetia, and other areas of the region. It is similar in aim and scope to the Encyclopedia Iranica, which along with Wikipedia, is one of the primary inspirations for the development of wikIran.
