LocalWiki, also iconised localwiki, is an open content, open source wiki engine compiled in Django and Python. LocalWiki projects are the opposite of today's bite-size, disposable web. They're informative, non-commercial, and built for the long term, by neighbors who simply love their communities. Originally known as Wiki Spot,[1] the LocalWiki project is being directed primarily by Philip Neustrom and Mike Ivanov, the co-founders of the Davis Wiki.
The LocalWiki wiki engine has a great feature – it has user editable maps, where every page has a real sense of place. These maps contributes to a rich, interlinked local resource, that gets better and better over time. LocalWiki has articles covering all seven continents of the Earth.[2]
LocalWiki is a United States 501(c)3 non-profit community improvement organization based in San Francisco County, State of California, United States of America. One of its former major supporters was wikiHow.
LocalWiki co-founder Philip Neustrom went on to co-found Encycla (Encycla.com).
