Survey of Vandalism Cleanup Options
I've had some problems with spam on my own wikis and have used a variety of approaches for cleanup including rolling my own extensions that delete all traces of spam users including their accounts and their edits. I'm trying to decide whether to invest more in those efforts right now, or to build on one of the other projects that already exists. I've been out of touch with the work for about two years, so I need to survey the current state of things before I make my choice. I'd love to help out my friends on wikiindex at the same time if possible, so I'm going to create my survey here. I'm slowly working my way through the discussions around spam and upgrades on this wiki ... AND ... I welcome any ideas about what folks want ... just add them here :-) Warm Regards, BrandonCsSanders
Working out from mw:Manual:Combating vandalism and mw:Manual:Combating spam (not real wild about the combat metaphor).
YiFei has created some really nice filters, so very little spam is getting through anymore, most problem we has was with Account Creation spam. Highly interested in solutions for folks that don't have access to the filters. Best, MarkDilley 25 February 2014
WikiIndex:ServerMove Extensions
Please make a list of extensions:
- Which where added in our old version
- Which we will have the new installation but did not have in the old configuration
- Which we had in the old configuration but will not have in the new installation
Manorainjan (talk) 10:03, 24 November 2014 (UTC)
- I was going to say that installation of mw:Extension:Cite is overdue, but if we're going to limit the pages on wikis to short, one- or two-paragraph blurbs, then there might not be much of a point. Leucosticte (talk) 18:43, 24 November 2014 (UTC)
Updates on the Server move?
You wrote " I expect the move to happen this month (February 2015)".
Now we got March and no news from You. Manorainjan (talk) 17:10, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
Old message
Still getting the message "This page is not enabled for semantic in-text annotations due to namespace restrictions. Details about how to enable the namespace is described on the configuration help page."Manorainjan (talk) 01:17, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
- This is part of the interface for Semantic Media Wiki now ... there is nothing wrong here. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 03:48, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
It eats up 4 lines of my edit screen every time. Who needs this message? I do not even know what "semantic in-text annotations" are, what to talk of wanting to use them? Please remove it! Manorainjan (talk) 07:53, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
- I can't just remove it. The authors of the Semantic Forms extension have decided that it is important and newer versions of the extension put it in. I can make a gadget that hides it ... which I did. If you go to preferences > gadgets you can select 'Hide SMWForm help' and the next time you reload your css (probably with a hard refresh) the box will be gone. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 18:16, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
OK, for me personally the problem is solved, also without hard refresh. But each and every of our visitors will get annoyed. Is it possible to make this gadget a default? Manorainjan (talk) 20:36, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
- I made it default. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 00:18, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
- -)
Size template
Horizon Wiki size template does not work any more. Manorainjan (talk) 01:22, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
- Putting 'YourWikiStatus' into the status property of that template is user error. It should either be fixed to be one of the allowed values for Property:Wiki_status, or Property:Wiki_status should be amended to allow YourWikiStatus as one of the values. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 03:57, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
In The old configuration it was not causing any technical problems when one let a default value unedited. 'YourWikiStatus' should be a legit content for that place. It should not even mess up that very line what to talk of messing up the size-template completely. Why did the new configuration stop to be fault tolerant? Manorainjan (talk) 07:57, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
- I think the template needs to be rewritten to show a default value of 'YourWikiStatus' or whatever if there isn't a status set, and then the status will either be empty or one of the valid choices. I'll look into this later. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 00:18, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
endless load
All pages do never finish to load.
- That sounds concerning. I'm unable to reproduce that on Chrome, Safari, or IE 10. So I'd guess it has something to do with your particular settings. Will you open up a console (for example on Firefox or chrome under developer tools) and see which asset is failing to load or if you are getting any javascript errors? BrandonCsSanders (talk) 04:12, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
I'm using Opera. Manorainjan (talk) 07:57, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
It does not happen with firefox.
- This is also on my queue. Manorainjan, can you confirm whether index.wiki has the problem too?
Yes it does. Manorainjan (talk) 19:13, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
AdSense 403 forbidden

neat freak
I'm not so sure that it is good to remove all this from the server move page. I would appreciate to leave most of it as history of an important even and as an outline or prototype for further similar activities. Who knows how often this wiki will move in future??? Manorainjan (talk) 19:06, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
- I'm a fan of Thread Mode to Document Mode so that a casual reader can get the quick summary without having to wade through a lot of back and forth. Perhaps you could move the part that you want to keep to the discussion page? BrandonCsSanders (talk) 19:13, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
- Rather than just talk about it and ask you to do it, I moved some of the important content to WikiIndex:Recipe for server moves and then linked to it prominently from WikiIndex:ServerMove. Seem like a reasonable approach? BrandonCsSanders (talk) 19:34, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
Who is online
I can not get that extension to work. Special:WhosOnline Manorainjan (talk) 00:30, 14 March 2015 (UTC)
- Fixed. I'm surprised this extension has ever worked. I pushed the fixes upstream to Wikimedia Foundation so future versions of extension should work. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 22:03, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks :-) Manorainjan (talk) 23:43, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
- Hm.. it works differently now. Earlier it had a kind of history. Users who where online for some time appeared several times on this list. What are the conditions of the current functionality? Like, how long back could a visit be so that it is still counted as online? Manorainjan (talk) 23:54, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
- The behavior before was broken. That is part of what I fixed. So long as a person has been active (loaded a page on the wiki) in the last hour they will show up. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 16:31, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
- I see.
- Is it possible to mention that on the special page itself, like: "Online within last hour".
- Is it possible to have an input form to determine the time by user? Manorainjan (talk) 16:44, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
- I see.
edit conflict
this is the second time I'm getting the edit conflict warning (anonymous) on Your talk page. But the edit is already visible in RC. --Manorainjan (talk) 16:47, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
I'm getting edit conflict messages also on other pages where surely nobody is editing. It is a mistake. Manorainjan (talk) 11:32, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
- Hmmm. I'll look into this. I'm not sure why that would be happening. How often does it happen? Does it happen every time? BrandonCsSanders (talk) 15:45, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
- I just got it on this page. So I'm able to duplicate the problem. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 15:46, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Not always, only once in a while, like just now ;-) "Someone else has changed this page since you started editing it. The upper text area contains the page text as it currently exists. Your changes are shown in the lower text area. You will have to merge your changes into the existing text. Only the text in the upper text area will be saved when you press "Save page"." Malformed e-mails
Account creation Recently, admins have started receiving e-mails when an account is requested. They are in the following form:
"Lauren Fournier" has requested an account and is waiting for confirmation.
The email address has been confirmed. You can confirm the request here "http://wikiindex.org/Special:ConfirmAccounts".
Unfortunately, this makes a malformed URI to http://wikiindex.org/Special:ConfirmAccounts%22
rather than the correct http://wikiindex.org/Special:ConfirmAccounts
. I'm bringing this to your attention because you are evidently the resident tech guy. Thanks. Koavf (talk) 01:32, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
- What about documenting Your workaround?Manorainjan 14:41, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
I modified the en.json file messages to no longer have an escaped " in them that gets doubly escaped. Changed to:
"requestaccount-email-subj": "{{SITENAME}} email address confirmation", "requestaccount-email-body": "Someone, probably you from IP address $1, has requested an account ($2) with this email address on {{SITENAME}}.\n\nTo confirm that this account really does belong to you on {{SITENAME}}, open this link in your browser:\n\n$3\n\nIf the account is created, only you will be emailed the password.\nIf this is *not* you, do not follow the link.\nThis confirmation code will expire at $4.", "requestaccount-email-subj-admin": "{{SITENAME}} account request", "requestaccount-email-body-admin": "($1) has requested an account and is waiting for confirmation.\nThe email address has been confirmed. You can confirm the request here $2",

- So far so good ... But I do not think, that if anybody else than You gets to fix something or manage another move or so, that Your talk page is the place where he would think that such kind of information is gathered. Where could be a good place where it would be found? Manorainjan 08:37, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
Upgrade to 1.24.2
I've upgraded to 1.24.2 and started making the wiki configurable by bureaucrats ... there will be a few anomolies that will need to be worked out. Please let me know if you see anything out of the ordinary. Right now I know that SemanticDrilldown is disabled. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 12:02, 21 April 2015 (PDT)
- First thing I noticed is a good one: The endless page load under Opera is gone :-)
Manorainjan 13:05, 21 April 2015 (PDT)
- Second is a bad thing: The template does not work properly any more. Check any of the wiki pages edited recently! Manorainjan 13:13, 21 April 2015 (PDT)
