'''Category: Meta''' — this [[Special:Categories|category]] here on WikiIndex contains 'meta' [[wiki]] sites.  '[[Cambridge-Dictionary:meta|Meta]]' (''adjective'') is a word of [[:Category:Greek|Greek]] origin meaning 'self-referential'.  When referring to computing, meta generally means referencing back to itself specifically; for example, the [[Wikimedia Meta-Wiki]] is a wiki site about the entire [[:Category:Wikimedia Foundation|Wikimedia Foundation]] (WMF).  It should be noted that not all meta wikis will contain the word 'meta' in their title or wiki name; some example meta wiki sites include [[Template:ShoutWiki hub|ShoutWiki hub]], [[WikiFree Hub]], and [[JSPWiki legacy wiki]].

On wiki sites powered by [[:Category:MediaWiki|MediaWiki]], they have a self-referencing [[namespace]] (usually prefixed by the primary name of the wiki site), which contains meta articles about the actual wiki site.  For example, for this [[WikiIndex]] wiki site, our meta articles <u>about</u> WikiIndex are found in the <tt>WikiIndex:</tt> namespace.
