Description
WikiTimeScale is a 2006 established Wiki whose purpose is to graphically illustrate the events of history in a clear and good arranged way.
It is not using any tables or some kind of HTML/XML tags to display the events but is instead creating images which are much more compact, can be fit to any screen width and can even be saved on the harddisc, for a presentation or for another homepage. The events are displayed as timelines in the graphic and there is a date-reference line at the top and bottom of the graphic. The system is interactive, so nobody is bound to any date or time-periode. The user is able to watch only a few days in history as well as several thousand years.
The graphic-images created by WikiTimeScale can be used as wished as long as the copyright of the images is clearly pointed out (for example by keeping the Copyright message created by WikiTimeScale, in the image). Everyone can take part in this project and the source code was put under the terms of the GNU GPL, so that means it's open source.
Engine
WikiTimeScale is using it's own engine. It's current version was released on September 24th and is called WikiTimeScale TwoZero. It has many new features, including a wikipedian like URL reference. For example the link http://www.wikitimescale.org/wiki/Imperium_Romanum will directly link to the Roman Empire entry. The engine is open source and can be used and changed by anyone (under the terms of the GPL Licence). Since WikiTimeScale TwoZero there is also an easy setup wizard (the page setup.php in the unzipped source-code directory) to install the WikiTimeScale engine on your webserver.
Multilingual
Since its beginning, WikiTimeScale is avaliable in german and english. In November 2006, a chinese interface has been set up too and currently there is a dutch version of the interface in work.
