Retro-gaming is a fandom of games that are no longer commercially available.

There are two main types of retro-games:

  • Tabletop roleplaying games (which are no longer in print) and
  • Computer games (which run on computers that are no longer sold).

Tabletop roleplaying games often update their rules, and it isn't uncommon for a game to have several editions. A tabletop retro-game may emulate an earier edition of a game that is still in publication or a system that has been abandoned.

Computer games run on specific computers and on specific operating systems, so when those older computers stop being sold it becomes harder to find a machine that will run the retro-game.

Both of these main types of retro-games involve an element of emulation:

  • A tabletop retro-game will emulate the system of an out of print game and
  • A computer retro-game will be run using a computer program that emulates an older computer operating system.
