Organizing wiki engine information and interlinking

• We have a category for each wiki engine, which is where we see all the different wikis which are using it;
• We have a wiki description page for wiki engines where they have a wiki (most wiki engine's have an official {wiki} website which is powered by the software, as a flagship example).

...so maybe we should describe the features of the wiki software at top of the category page ("The following wikis are powered by '''SuchAndSuchWiki'''. This software has nifty features X Y Z."), and we include a link to the wiki description page ("The home page of this wiki engine is [[SuchAndSuchWiki]]")

...Then on the wiki description page we describe the contents of the wiki itself ("This wiki supports the user and developer community for the 'SuchAndSuchWiki' wiki engine") and we include a link to the category ("See [[:Category:SuchAndSuchWiki]] for a list of wikis powered by this wiki engine").

There may be some overlap, but generally we go into more detail about the software, on the category page. And we talk about the information they are providing on their homepage, in the wiki description page.

Unpopular wiki engines

Yes, that sounds fine.

Alternatively, we could pretend that all those unique wiki engines are all using the same wiki engine. We would name that wiki engine something like "Unique wiki engine".

"Rare wiki engine" would be short and polite (NPOV) while still accurate. "Unique" would not be good applied to a class, especially if two or more were sufficiently similar that neither should be called "unique" and/or if one might find a second user and therefore definitely not be unique in one sense. robinp 01:51, 7 Feb 2006 (EST)

Actually there's already something called Category:Proprietary which was presumably created with this kind of intention. I reckon maybe we should put these wikis into the that category, then just mention on their article page, that they are powered by proprietary software called 'blahblah'. two MediaWiki?

The list includes both

Specifically we need to find which page says "[[Category:MediaWiki?]]" (or tag template equivalent). 'MediaWiki?' seems to be equivalent to 'MediaWiki', which is fortunate in that it means the problem doesn't really matter, but unfortunate in that we don't know which of the 296 mediawiki pages has that wrong '?' on it! -- Harry Wood 09:59, 13 Feb 2006 (EST)

Manorainjan – I must have had a really bad day back in September 2014 when I replied :-( Please accept my apologies.

I have taken a fresh look at BoltWire. BoltWires' owners are clearly claiming it is a wiki engine, and they are making some valid and plausible claims in support of a wiki engine. Indeed, there are already a few long-established wiki engines which are targeted at the content management system direction. IIRC, TikiWiki is one such CMS orientated wiki engine, so I am in total agreement with you that BoltWire should be listed here on WikiIndex. I am just curious that BoltWire owners do not provide a list of existing BoltWire users (well I can not find it on their website), nor is there a live public demo of BoltWare in action. Are you aware of any BoltWare users? My main reason for this curiosity is simply weather to create its listing as a category or merely an article. A category would be needed if we can index other wikis running BoltWare, but if there are zero (or only one) - it can be an article. Look forward to your input, best regards. Wikia not an engine

I keep seeing "Wikia" in the "Wiki engine:" slot of pages at WikiIndex, but when I check those wikis at wikia.com i see "Powered by MediaWiki".

1. Is it ok to update those articles at WikiIndex from "Wikia" to "MediaWiki"? --EarthFurst (talk) 09:28, 30 April 2016 (PDT)

The Wikia-Software is certainly based on MediaWiki. But it is so heavily modified, that for us, it counts as its own wiki engine. At the same time wiki is a Wiki farm. We do not have any clear policy or any guidances at all to clearly decide or distinguish what is a modified or simply customized engine and what is a new engine. On the API-Wiki of Wikia it is said: "Since Wikia is built on top of MediaWiki, the MediaWiki API can be used to access most of the data on our sites. In addition, the LyricWiki API gives access to LyricWiki and the Wikia Custom API provides access to many of our Wikia-specific features". Manorainjan 10:01, 30 April 2016 (PDT)
