::Regarding the removal of what You call a vote: I removed the name of talk from the list of "No concerns" because he expressed concerns right there. So He does have concerns. I moved those concerns to his talk page to give him chance to see I removed it and to place it at any place more suitable if he wishes to hold them up of which I was not sure because of the contradictory statement he gave. As such his name does not belong in this chapter of "no concerns". I did not consider this chapter created by me as a place to vote for anything. I created it to collect expressed abstention from voting which I found distributed around individual talk pages. The most obvious utility of this chapter is, that one does not need to wait for or ask again those persons. ==Cleaning the list of accounts==
This is my most recent field of interest. But I see the server move as a more important task. I do not want to conflict this tasks. I'm also not convinced, that cleaning it up prior to the move does really any good. If anybody thinks this would make any work easier, I strongly object those kind of idea. Cleaning up the user list would require quite some discussion and experimentation. What I like to add to the server move question from this angle is the question which extensions should be in the new installation in order to promote a clean user list. That would be:

First, I apologize for being unresponsive ... I will be more responsive going forward.  Second, the move is still intended.  There are a couple of extensions that need to be ported over before the move can happen.  Barring any unexpected complications that come up during testing, I expect the move to happen this month (February 2015).  I also added a status update on ServerName.<br/>

::::::Good points both.  We have to be careful because using robots.txt in this way can cause SEO problems (spiders ignore it rather than index it even though we are ready for them) for index.wiki if we decide to move to it in the future.  Since index.wiki has no appreciable presence in the search indices I haven't worried about it.  That said, it can dilute wikiindex.org slightly (duplicate content), so I should probably just put the whole thing behind an http_auth login.  RE: the notice there is a site notice that shows the following on all pages "NOTE: index.wiki is for testing configuration ... changes to it will not be preserved!". "they make for example Special:ListUsers much less useful" Isn't it the exception rather than the rule in the wikisphere that Special:ListUsers is useful? Leucosticte (talk) 23:17, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

What is happening?[edit]

As of these changes the page says that together with the move the domain will change. So this page is not just about a server move? I am utterly confused. I can live with either way, but it think must be clear what we are talking about. Why was only my vote removed and not the votes of the people voting prior to me??? --kgh (talk) 15:02, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

I've asked Brandon to move the site from a stand alone server to the new create.wiki platform because it'll make it a lot easier to maintain and improve performance. We're hoping this goes smoothly! Separately, as the .wiki operator, we have reserved the name index.wiki and have the option to move the site to that new domain. We think it's shorter and makes sense to use .wiki vs. .com, but that said, we don't want to force this change without active contributors being onboard with it -- it is still a choice. Raymond King | talk
That's how I understood the page and there are no objections from my side to this. Thank you for clarifying. About the domain move. Since I was able to share my thoughts on this and know that they are being considered I am ok with any future decision this. No worries here. --kgh (talk) 16:10, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
I'm not sure about the last question regarding the removal of kgh's vote either? Raymond King | talk
Regarding the removal of what You call a vote: I removed the name of talk from the list of "No concerns" because he expressed concerns right there. Manorainjan (talk) 16:03, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
Perhaps this is basically my mistake after all. I should not have commented on a spot were I was not really supposed to. Let's just leave it as is and move on. No need for further discussions. I will add my vote again and things are clear. --kgh (talk) 16:10, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

Cleaning the list of accounts[edit]

This is my most recent field of interest. But I see the server move as a more important task. I do not want to conflict this tasks. I'm also not convinced, that cleaning it up prior to the move does really any good. If anybody thinks this would make any work easier, I strongly object those kind of idea. Cleaning up the user list would require quite some discussion and experimentation. What I like to add to the server move question from this angle is the question which extensions should be in the new installation in order to promote a clean user list. That would be:

 • Function to really delete an account without the need of back-end access so that any designated sysop can do it.
 • Blacklist against the creation of new spam account
 • Functions that help administration of user accounts including high volumes of old accounts. How would the complete list be analysed, sorted, managed?

Update on the ServerMove[edit]

Manorainjan (talk) 19:46, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

First, I apologize for being unresponsive ... I will be more responsive going forward. Second, the move is still intended. There are a couple of extensions that need to be ported over before the move can happen. Barring any unexpected complications that come up during testing, I expect the move to happen this month (February 2015). I also added a status update on server name. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 14:30, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

What You mean: ported? A rewrite? Just installing? Configuration? Manorainjan (talk) 09:52, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

You were supposed to say, "You may dispense with the pleasantries, commander. I'm here to put you back on schedule." Leucosticte (talk) 10:56, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Apologies, ported was confusing and inaccurate terminology. I'm installing all of the extensions from the most recent version and verifying that they are working. There are a couple remaining. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 19:44, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

While You are at it: Does the current configuration have statistics that allow to see how many visitors the wiki has? Something more than most popular pages, more like x unique visitors in a day/week. Something that shows how important or unimportant this wiki is to the world around it? Manorainjan (talk) 21:28, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

Current configuration of which wiki? All wikis on the wiki.wiki farm use google analytics in order to get an accurate count of actual people visiting them. This information is not currently published because it is non-trivial to expose it. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 19:32, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

If not published, how is it accessed and by whom?

Staff from Top Level Design (the company providing the wiki.wiki hosting platform) have access to the google analytics for all wikis hosted on the wiki.wiki platform to keep track of the growth of wikis on the platform. User:Jason can provide updates on WikiIndex traffic once it has been moved to the wiki.wiki platform. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 20:54, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

Test server ready for testing[edit]

http://index.wiki/ is a test server hosted on the wiki.wiki platform. It is a clone of WikiIndex.org offering us a chance to test the configuration before moving WikiIndex.org to that platform. Once we're satisfied that it is working appropriately we'll switch wikiindex.org over to that platform (still at http://wikiindex.org rather than at http://index.wiki). Please poke it and describe any problems you uncover on this page. As a reminder, any changes to index.wiki will be lost when it is refreshed from WikiIndex.org. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 20:54, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

ServerMove Monday?[edit]

Unless anyone uncovers big issues with the test site http://index.wiki I'm going to move wikiindex.org to the wiki.wiki platform today. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 15:07, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

Just noticed that there has been correspondence on http://index.wiki/Talk:BrandonCsSanders ... I'll address those issues before moving. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 15:11, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
IP edits are not possible. I just tried , but couldn't get the Captcha. ??? --Wolf | talk 15:22, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
The usual password does not work. What is the right word on the index.wiki? Manorainjan (talk) 18:28, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
It is the site name in all cases, so on index.wiki it is "Index Wiki" BrandonCsSanders (talk) 20:07, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
In the future, if this type of site is set up, it should be removed from Google via robots.txt so that people don't edit it because they mistake it for the main site. Also, there should be a notice that appears on the edit screen warning that the edits won't be preserved. Leucosticte (talk) 00:27, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
Good points both. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 00:36, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

The IP edits are working (was just the wrong site name), but there is an interaction between WikiEditor and CharInsert that I'd like to resolve before finalizing the move. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 00:34, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

Moving Will the site have any downtime? Koavf (talk) 03:24, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
There will be a short period of read-only while DNS propagates ... for most people this will be less than 20 minutes.

BrandonCsSanders (talk) 18:20, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

On my development machine the update of the database took 4hrs 25minutes. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 16:11, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

It isn't a good idea to switch over right before the weekend (I'm less available for troubleshooting on the weekend). Also, I still haven't sorted the issue with WikiEditor/Gadgets/CharInsert. Finally, I want a little more time to tune performance. So Monday perhaps? BrandonCsSanders (talk) 21:43, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

In the process of figuring out the issue with WikiEditor/Gadgets/CharInsert I've decided to upgrade to the latest release of MediaWiki (1.24.1). This means that the wiki will be in read-only mode a bit longer than the 20 minutes I indicated before. More like 1-2 hrs (the database update takes a long time). The site will be entirely accessible during that time, just in read-only mode. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 16:04, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
The index.wiki server is in the middle of an upgrade right now (so unavailable for testing) ... I need to upgrade php on it in order to accomodate the move to 1.24.1. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 00:05, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
Timeline So do you anticipate this being done by Tuesday? Koavf (talk) 04:01, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
Okay ... we're ready to do the move. I've upgraded to 1.24.1 and gotten the WikiEditor/Gadgets/CharInsert issue sorted. It will probably about an hour of read-only mode. Any reason for me to wait? BrandonCsSanders (talk) 19:22, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

ServerMove is Finished[edit]

Please let me know (here or on my talk page) what issues you encounter. One I've already discovered is that AdSense adverts are returning 403 forbidden on http://wikiindex.org/ but working fine on http://index.wiki/ ... and there is no difference in their configuration! BrandonCsSanders (talk) 00:25, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

What happened to this DeWikiIndex? Manorainjan (talk) 18:21, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Internationalization I know that subdomains were tried for awhile several years ago but eventually abandoned for collapsing all of the content into one unified wiki. I didn't participate in that conversation but I know that Mark knows about it. Koavf (talk) 01:57, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

WikiIndex:Proposal: domain name change[edit]

Given the progress made re: server move, I invite all to weigh in at WikiIndex talk:Proposal: domain name change. -Jason (talk) 18:08, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Google AdSense[edit]

 • After the move advertising by Google AdSense has appeared in the navigation column at the left. It was not mentioned that Google AdSense would be introduced during the move. Community was not asked about that. Manorainjan (talk) 06:40, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

import from Brandons TalkPage: "AdSense 403 forbidden"[edit]

AdSense adverts are returning 403 forbidden on http://wikiindex.org/ but working fine on http://index.wiki/ ... and there is no difference in their configuration!

It may by that AdSense is very sensitive. It dislikes a lot. And chances ar, that the people governing AdSense once saw what is going on here and excluded this wiki but they did not get this new DomainName yet. So it will be excluded in near future. ;-)

I did not know that there should be adverts on this wiki???? Manorainjan (talk) 19:10, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

It pays for the hosting (which is on the order of $100/mo for a site with this much traffic). Ray has been paying for the hosting out of his own pocket for years. If you ask him to, he might continue to do that and turn off the adverts. BrandonCsSanders (talk) 19:31, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

I got this add just now (in the navigation bar to the left) ..... Cant't paste it, because it triggers our spam filter! Trying the picture only:

Advertisements are contextual and are targeted at the user specifically, or based on the content of the page. I see a lot of advertisements for hosting providers, monitoring tools, and other server administration stuff all over on many different sites because I search for those items a lot on Google and visit content sites about those topics that doubleclick has bugged with their 1x1 tracker images. So Google AdSense knows that usually the most lucrative adverts to serve me have to do with tools a server admin uses. Make sense? BrandonCsSanders (talk) 19:31, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

import from WikiIndex:Community portal/News: 13 March 2015 Google Adsense[edit]

Does anyone know when this appeared? ~~ MarkDilley

New scripts I haven't seen these before about an hour ago: I accessed the site through a standard browser within the past 24 hours but looked at it on a simple feature phone around maybe 90 minutes ago and saw little ads at the bottom of the page. Koavf (talk) 01:42, 14 March 2015 (UTC)
