== Message from my userpage ==
== Policy regarding user articles ==

Welcome Justin!
I have started a vote on said topic [[WikiIndex talk:Policies and Guidelines|here]]. --[[User talk:Rock-O-Jello|This is MY book, and I'm gonna READ IT!!!]] 09:56, 18 January 2017 (PST)

We have a tradition of either redirecting this page to your namespace in the main article space, or leaving it.  Two examples, my login is my name, so it shows in recent changes, and redirects to the main namespace or [http://www.wikiindex.com/index.php?title=User:Ahy1&redirect=no this example].  This is a discussion in process, let me know what you think!  Nice to have you here.  Best, [[MarkDilley]]  (oh, btw, I am a Hoosier by birth, Indianapolis also, although I moved to SE MI early on)
== How to deal with others ==

== Your thoughts on upgrade and logo ==
Telling someone "don't be a jerk" is generally wrong — especially if it's true. It upsets the other person and reduces the chance that they'll listen to what you say.

Hi Justin, can you check out, contribute if you want - [[WikiIndex:Admin_Notes#October_2010_Upgrade_Thoughts]] - best, [[MarkDilley]]
Focus on behaviour, not on individuals. Say what you want and why you want it. Say why you think the other person's behaviour is counterproductive. [[wp:WP:AGF|Assume good faith]] to the maximum extent possible. If you don't understand why someone is doing something, ask. Don't rush to complain until you are sure that good faith negotiations can't work. Understand before insisting on being understood.

== message re: upgrade path & moves ==
Remember that your perception can be wrong. If the other person is writing in an unfamiliar language, or has a different cultural background, you may misunderstand their intentions.

Hello, please check out [[WikiIndex:NewLogoDecision]] and [[WikiIndex:Spring 2011 Upgrade Path]]. Also, I am moving some of your move edits back to the main namespace - a couple of them are [[WikiIdeas]] and I think fit with what [[WikiIndex]] was envisioned. Not a steadfast rule, please discuss if you would like. Best, [[MarkDilley]]
Above all, be genuine. Don't ask questions when you know the answer. Don't say you want one thing if you want another. Don't try to persuade people of things that aren't true. Do not respond to jerkitude [[wp:Norm of reciprocity|in kind]], no matter how tempting it may be.

== Congratulations ==
Exerpt from: [https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_be_a_jerk here].
You do not follow Your own rules. --[[User_talk:Manorainjan|'''<span style="color: orange;">Manorainjan</span>''']] 09:12, 25 January 2017 (PST)

Hi - I was just wondering the reason for [http://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=Template:Wikitravel&diff=172934&oldid=172931 this edit]I'm aware that removing spaces either side of hyphens/dashes is an American method, and is often found in Wikipedia - but it doesn;t reflect international English (and also makes it difficult, if not impossible for machine translators to correctly translate). I trust you are aware we don't have to follow the Wikipedia Manual of Style here on WikiIndex - we want to reach out to an international audience!
:::'''PA?''' Since you love [[wp:WP:LAWYER|wiki-lawyering]]: I didn't call you a jerk. I refuse to believe that you don't know better. You are absolutely playing dumb about how your behavior of harassing and deliberately provoking others is both real and detrimental to this site. I'm telling you to stop now and if I see more instances of you harassing other users, I'll block you. It's not hard to ask you to be a decent person and this is a conversation that we've been having for years. [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 09:25, 25 January 2017 (PST)

Can I also ask that you try to remember completing the edit summary before saving edits, please.  Edit summaries are important for those who track the wiki activity via the Recent changes.

I also noticed you are using something called [[HotCat]] - is that a new extension installed somewhere?  Can you link me to it so I can look at it please?  Best regards [[User:Hoof Hearted|Sean, aka <small>Hoof Hearted</small>]] • [[:Category:Active administrators of this wiki|Admin]] • <small>[[User talk:Hoof Hearted|talk2HH]]</small> 02:50, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
I do not love what You have linked to, not even knew it. Your link does not lead to any specific page/artikle. Correct Your link, if anything is to be said by this! --[[User_talk:Manorainjan|'''<span style="color: orange;">Manorainjan</span>''']] 09:33, 25 January 2017 (PST)
:'''Dashes''' As I understand it, spaced ndashes/non-spaced mdashes is standard English. If you want a spaced ndash, that's up to you of course. I don't know anything about difficult with machine reading, but I believe you. As far as HotCat goes, it's from [[Wikimedia Commons]]. If you want it, see: [[User:Koavf/monobook.js]]. You can copy/paste it if you want. [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 03:36, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

::Now, after reading it, I ask You, why You are pointing this to '''me'''?
:::"A common mistake of misguided advocacy is when a person appoints himself a mediator and proceeds with judging the sides by telling them whether they are right or wrong  instead of helping the sides to better state their positions and to find common grounds.  It is not uncommon that one side is indeed wrong, and in such a case a mediator begins to appear to take sides thus alienating the wrong side  and triggering their defense instincts, further entrenching them against an amicable resolution."

:::'''Direction''' I am directing this to you because your behavior is the common denominator of the problems and that's also obviously by design. I'm not sure how this quotation is supposed to be relevant as I'm not self-appointed: I was given the position of an admin because others think I can be of value here. Others are questioning your value to the community due to your disposition. You can act childish about this and pretend like you are unimpeachable but the reality is that you make it a point to be obnoxious and abrasive to others, driving them away from the site. "Are we going to make a page about every wiki user or just someone who has some notability...?" [[:Category:Wiki People]] says "this is a list of people who consider themselves to be part of the wiki community and their associations to various Wiki sites". I would say that [[PeterKa]] probably considers himself part of the wiki community. Shall we change that page to say "this is a list of ''notable'' people . . ."?
==Footer copyright text==
Are you aware of how to edit the copyright warning as shown at the footer of every page? Someone previously suggested [[MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning]], but its text looks nothing like what is shown in our footer.  I'm asking because both the license AND the fair use disclaimer are both linked (together) to the off-site Creative Commons license page - and there should be two separate links.  Best,  [[User:Hoof Hearted|Sean, aka <small>Hoof Hearted</small>]] • [[:Category:Active administrators of this wiki|Admin]] / [[WikiIndex:Bureaucrats|'Crat]] • <small>[[User talk:Hoof Hearted|talk2HH]]</small> 23:21, 31 January 2017 (PST)

Either way, another question is, are we going to actually make use of [[:Template:Delete]] and invite discussion, or just have sysops delete pages summarily? Pages deleted in that manner can be undeleted, but then we have the classic problem that non-sysops are unable to view the page and therefore cannot give very well-informed input about whether undeletion would be a good idea. If we are going to use the template, then sysops will need to periodically close those discussions; that didn't happen with the last round of deletion proposals. They sat there for weeks, so I closed them myself as "keep" or "no consensus" since there was in fact no consensus to delete (hardly anyone saw fit to weigh in on those talk pages). [[User:Leucosticte|Leucosticte]] ([[User talk:Leucosticte|talk]]) 17:19, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
== Wiki.Wiki ==
:'''Deletion''' That's a fair question: it's hard to figure out what the community wants when it's too small but it's also hard to foster community if there are rogue admins. Do you want me to undelete? If so, I can move it to your userspace. I don't think that we want to make millions of profiles on wiki users—that sounds nonsensical. [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 17:23, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
::You can userfy it if you want. Since the norm on this wiki is that userspace can be edited by people other than the user, it's not that much different from mainspace. However, those userspace pages would need to be dropped from any mainspace categories, which I guess is part of the point.

::I don't see how it's nonsensical to host content on non-notable stuff. If we were to limit ourselves to covering notable wikis, wiki people, and wiki ideas, then our purpose would already be served by Wikipedia. The lower you set the notability standard, the more people are attracted to the wiki to write articles about non-notable stuff, and you end up with a larger community to keep these articles at a reasonably high standard of quality (in terms of criteria such as [[wp:Wikipedia:Good_article_criteria#The_six_good_article_criteria|these]] or [http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newCS_85.htm these]). People google some obscure wiki, wiki person, or wiki idea, and find WikiIndex at the top of the search results and end up editing the article and perhaps exploring the rest of WikiIndex.
Hello Koavf: is Wiki.Wiki still active, or is it going to be closed? I'm asking because I saw that they are not accepting new wikis anymore, and I asked this to Ray but he never replied. Thanks, --[[User:TheTVFan|TheTVFan]] ([[User talk:TheTVFan|talk]]) 09:46, 1 February 2017 (PST)
:'''No clue''' Your guess is as good as mine. Although there is definitely some overlap between users here and there (like Jason and Ray), I am not associated with .wiki at all. I imagine that it is like many of the new flood of TLDs which are underused and many persons thought they could monetize them but couldn't. That's just speculation, of course. [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 20:10, 1 February 2017 (PST)
::Indeed, I was only making speculations like you :-). I thought of the possible "closure" because of the inactivity of users Jason and BrandonCSSanders who were active here in the past. Thanks for your reply. Best, --[[User:TheTVFan|TheTVFan]] ([[User talk:TheTVFan|talk]]) 05:57, 2 February 2017 (PST)

::I've never been persuaded by deletionist arguments such as that having too many articles causes categories to get clogged up with cruft. In that situation, we simply create more subcategories so that no category gets too big. E.g. if "Wikis created in 2014" gets too big, then we narrow it down to "Wikis created in May 2014". Also, although RecentChanges does get clogged up with edits to cruft articles when there aren't high notability standards, the alternative might be that (1) RecentChanges gets clogged up with deletion debates and/or (2) people get disgruntled over the outcome of debates over notability and leave the wiki, resulting in fewer people watching RecentChanges.

::That's why I tend toward radical inclusionism. Well, that and the fact that I like to write about cruft. In the immortal words of Encyclopedia Dramatica, "Wikipedia deletes thousands of articles a day that they consider 'cruft'. People who use Wikipedia like to write a lot of 'cruft', from mentioning tours that musicians have gone on through to various characters in cartoon shows, computer games or tabletop roleplaying games, it is what Wikipedia does. Furthermore, it is what Wikipedia does best! But at the same time, Wikipedia hates that that is what they do best! They want to instead be known for making legitimate, real, articles, however they can never do this right and end up with totally inaccurate articles where they can't even get the dates right." :::'''Notability''' I'm not suggesting that WikiIndex needs a notability requirement like Wikipedia but that there has to be some limit on the content that can be included here. Including every wiki is a somewhat difficult but not an impossible goal&ndash;there are tens of thousands. Including a profile of everyone who has used a wiki is impossible and meaningless. Are we going to have articles on everyone who has read Wikipedia...? [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 04:58, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

I think we could end up chasing our tails if we try to establish where we draw our line regarding notability. I suggest another test of weather we include people might be 'interesting' – do they have an interesting story or back story which others might like to read about?

::::I blocked him because he is using a vandalbot! We should revert his edits, he destroyed the pages... However, I don't agree with summary deletions (apart from the obvious spam). If someone has taken the effort to create an article, we should at least give them the courtesy of discussing the merits or de-merits of said article; and therefore we ''should'' use [[Template:Delete]] as a matter of routine. Hi, have you noticed the current bugs in the WikiIndex software?  I am constantly plagued by three separate (but may be related) issuesFirst, I regularly get a white page with 'database errors' (or similar wording), secondly, I consistently get a HTTP 500 error - on what seems to be large-ish articles/templates, and finally, it adamantly refuses to allow me any image file uploads.
:'''Agreed''' Using a more broad and general category is probably a good idea, only breaking it up into more specific ones if it would really be helpful for navigation. [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 23:19, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

I'm sure we are all aware that both the entire [[:Category:Wikimedia Foundation|Wikimedia Foundation]] range of wikis, all of [[:Category:Wikia|Wika]], and any independent wiki running the latest versions of [[:Category:MediaWiki|MediaWiki]] (MW) can now no longer output page view data, and so we can no longer update their specific wF.  However, other wiki engines can still output page views, and therefore wF data.  Furthermore, there are still MANY independent wikis running MW that have not upgraded to the latest MW version, and are continuing to reliably output page view data.  So, in line with our now established ethos of keeping dead, vanished wiki, it would be good if we can retain all wikiFactor data. It was for that very reason why I amended the boilerplates with – <code><nowiki><br>wikiFactor as of: 2012-MM-DD</nowiki></code> – to allow both page count and wikiFactor data to remain on our articles, and make it clear of the separate dates for both values. Our own [[WikiIndex]] article page illustrates this (though that page uses live, dynamic data for the page count and page count date).  For articles that have had their wF data deleted, look back through its [[edit history]] to find required info.
I pointed out that the Join-functionality described on the homepage does not work.
He really should place a big not on the homepage to explain the situation.
That should not be so difficult.

From my opinion, Locked belongs to the EditMode. Maybe not historically but logically.

[[User:Manorainjan|Manorainjan]] ([[User talk:Manorainjan|talk]])
Hi Justin, you are obviously highly knowledgable regarding Wikipedia, so I hope you don't mind if I ask you a <cough> 'interesting' question.  On the Alexa site for [https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/wikipedia.org Wikipedia.org], near the bottom of the page, it lists "Other Sites Owned". Numbers 1, 3, and 5 are explanatory, but 2 and 4 have . . . erm . . . raised my eyebrows!  Number 2 (at time I viewed Alexa) was <nowiki>nekkid.info</nowiki> (<u>warning</u>: NOT suitable for work/school/minors etc) is a XXX p0rn site, and number 4 was <nowiki>searchbastard.com</nowiki> (now goes to a parking domain site).

:'''Reasons''' Statuses exist just as helpful guides. If you can think of more categories that would be useful, that's fine. If a community stops editing because it peters out, that's one thing--someone else can come along and begin editing. If a community stops editing because of a technical restriction, that's quite another. [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 03:51, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
So . . . is Alexa correct?  Does Wikipedia actually own those two?  If they do, I am guessing (though not defaming) Jimbo was the original owner. Does Wikipedia and / or the WMF have any need, or justification for owning those?  My only guess is the potential revenue stream from number 2 - which might be a valid commercial reason, but is it ethical?

'''Consensus''' To edit one article in the [[BRD cycle|BRD]] style is one thing, to ignore discussion of community another: [[Category talk:Wiki Status]]. If You think there should be 'Locked' as Status, why don't You bring it in the discussion? I had proposed "Halted" long ago. So, let us continue there. ::Wikipedia as such does not own anything at all. If some WP-thingy owns anything, it is the '''Wikimedia Foundation Inc.''' which is a non-profit organisation which has registered the domain wikipedia.org and similar domains. Besides this entry on Alexa, there is no indication that WMF owns searchbastard.com and the like. It is likely, that those domains where owned by the company Bomis Inc. (or the people who owned the company) which also registered Bomis.com. WMF was founded by the people of Bomis. There is neither need nor use or indication, that those domains should or would have been transferred to the WMF as well. Anyway no domain owns any other domain. Therefore, if Alexa states any "owned by" than Alexa should state, who is the registrar of wikipedia.org in the first place, which Alexa does not do. Even the term "to own" is wrong. Therefore this "information" of "Other Sites Owned" is questionable by design. At best, there could have been a moment in time when wikipedia.org and some of the other mentioned domains have been registered by the same institution. But this institution has not been and is not the WMF. The "ownerships" of the other domains are heavily obfuscated. I think, what this Alexa entry rally proves is the inaccuracy of Alexa because it is so obviously wrong and about such a prominent domain, that Alexa staff could not convincingly excuse it by "we can not control every little detail in our database...". They do not control any detail at all. It proves that Alexa is run by weasels. Their data collecting processes are so overly automated that blatant inaccuracy is guaranteed. We know pretty well how much work it makes to keep track with ever changing details about internet entities. We can not do it ourselves, not enough manpower. If Alexa would try to present correct data, they would have to more than triple their staff and would not be able to gain any profits for the investors. == MOVED TO XEN.WIKI is at the top of xenharmonic now ==

2010 this category was created without asking anybody or even trying to introduce it to the community or giving it a definition and only for the purpose to mark a very limited set of 8 wikis of the WikiMedia foundation. This was already a mistake. It was ignoring the requirements of well functioning database and ignoring the community of this wiki. You did not correct this mistake, You engraved it. The definition which You created aligned the use on [[MeatballWiki]] and ignored the original use for which it was created. So You created more confusion and contradiction. And now You are doing Your very best to defend that rather than trying to understand that it should be coordinated with the rest of us. You also made no attempt at all to introduce Your change to the community. On  17 October 2013 You assigned the not defined status Locked and did not care that it was no member of WikiStatus. In August we had this discussion [[Category talk:Wiki Status]] which You took part in shortly about another aspect. You know pretty well that it was not finalised. You also did not contribute in a fashion to finalize it, did not make a suggestion that could have helped to solve the puzzle. You saw my Invitation2Invitations which is pointing to this unfinished discussion and actively went on to ignore this discussion for doing YOUR own thing in spite of it. If I would do such things and mess up WikiStatus matters just according to my discretion I think I would get blocked again. Your mission statement "I like the idea of fostering community between wikis and the larger movement for free and open culture..." is not reflected in Your edits here. Or should that be translated as: "I like the idea but will not actively contribute to it." ?

The Template like The Wiki like in the purpose of this wiki.

You always get enough time to tidy up Your user page by nicely adding the new entry of the newly created page, never allow any untidy entry on Your space but have no time to tidy the wiki pages. So it would be by far better to create a sub-page to Your user space to note down the wiki URL or what have you in a format as messy as You like and come back to create a wiki page with structured data with "The Template" when You got the time to do real work.

:'''"Junk"''' As pointed out above by Sean: these edits are perfectly fine. Why would I care if you don't like them? Why would you change this page to imply that ''I'' am planning on adding more content to them? You're being an exceptionally rude person right now.

* Do You consider these chunks as contribution?
** Yes. If we have ''no'' information about something, then adding ''some'' information about it is a step in the right direction.
* Who do You think should and would turn it into a useful page?
** Anyone. This is a wiki, so anyone can edit it.
* What kind of impression do You think those pages create on visitors?
** Probably "there's a lot of work to do" and hopefully "...so I'll join and add my time".

(ec) In Koavf's defense, I'll say that this wiki seems to be suffering from the lack of a strong leader to settle disputes and create policy. Wikis without such leadership usually tend to devolve into either a situation like RationalWiki's, in which the herd stampedes and tramples dissidents; or like enwiki's (or to some extent, RW), in which the ArbCom or mods operates as an oligarchy with little accountability or oversight; or like MediaWiki.org's, in which any sysop can pretty much do whatever he wants, and no one ever gets de-sysoped. We don't have a lot of clear policy on what is or isn't appropriate behavior for users or sysops, which again is the result of a lack of a strong leader.

Say what you will about places like Conservapedia, at least they do have a place where the buck stops. When the final authority says something, you know that no one is acting outside of what is appropriate. Manoranjan I don't think believes in wikivacations, and the most recent attempts to force him into one failed. == Conflict ==

I regret that it has been necessary for me to comment on you past and the situation with Leucosticte. If you back up and let go of so much control, you will come to find that Leucosticte is generally a cooperative user, when given clear guidance. He will stay within what the community sets as policy. If he doesn't like it, he goes away. Usually!

However, there is a far more difficult user active, Manorainjan. I'm seeing that his incivility may have led Hoof Hearted to abandon WikiIndex. Difficult users can lead administrators into errors, or what will look like errors, and so when MarkDilley did not support Hoof Hearted, it may have blown his fuses. I hope that WikiIndex can get Hoof Hearted back.

Meanwhile, handling problem users tests the capacity of a wiki and a wiki community to handle conflict. Manorainjan is not always wrong, but is tendentious and tenacious, and easily falls into incivility. Such users can be handled with firm clarity. Because of their condition, they may eventually pick some fight with all the active administrators, leading to a problem with recusal policies (whether those policies are explicit or only implied, they are what users expect.) Under those conditions, any administrator may take emergency action, and what I'm here today for is to advise on that, if you care to receive advice. First of all, before taking an emergency action, make sure it is actually an emergency! That is, there will be harm from delay. Second, make your action minimal, just enough to postpone harm. Third, immediately consult the community, do not wait for someone else to complain. Disclose the conflict of interest that might otherwise prohibit the action.

Manorainjan should be warned about incivility. When incivility is allowed to continue, wikis die. I have just pinged him about an abusive sequence, and I've seen a lot more in looking around today. Manorainjan can be a useful contributor, but civility is fundamental to the function of any sound wiki community, so ... if he is warned and disregards the warnings, then he should be blocked. For a user like this, his talk page should remain open, let him rant on that page, and the blocking admin shouldn't take further action. He should not be "banned." Carrot and stick. I have long experience in dealing with problem users. Some, it may be hopeless, but others can be successfully encouraged to cooperate and collaborate.

I do have some question about block length. Wikipedia practice is to block progressively, for short periods, extending into long periods. However, my first real block on Wikipedia, by Iridescent, was indef. However, Iridescent was explicit, "indef until a shift," not "indef as in forever." On a small wiki, if a user is indeffed, the user page should be carefully monitored for unblock request and the user should be given full opportunity to show an understanding of the block reason, and to undertake to not continue the cause of the block. It is also possible to unblock a user for the purpose of participating in a community discussion of the block. If unblocked for that reason, the unblocking admin may always, without raising any recusal issue, undo their own action, the unblock.

Care with this can establish for the community that administrators have the privilege in order to serve the community, not merely their own opinion. It can help to build community. Thanks. --[[User:Abd|Abd]] ([[User talk:Abd|talk]]) 23:22, 3 December 2014 (UTC)

::Sure. We did not allow L. to create whatever he wanted on Wikiversity, because his recent-favorite topics can be very hot, and we don't need the disruption. We pointed to how he could actually accomplish some of what he wanted -- participating in the creation of ethical guidelines -- but he decided on one issue, the suicide material, to go to Wikibooks, which had already decided as a community to allow such material (and so has Wikipedia.) On the other main problem issue, we'll call it CP (to be clear, none of his sites have been "Child Pornography," but some contain material that can be construed as advocacy for personal sexual freedom, and that, in the WMF wikis, can raise issues of "Child Protection." He has apparently abandoned that issue on WMF wikis.

He stopped when warned, but people then pursued him. We saw that lead to disruption here. WikiIndex is absolutely not set up to discuss these issues and handle what will arise.

::However, Wikiindex has a mission, and the mission is clear, and there are no exceptions stated. It's an index of all wikis, past and present, and this has been explicit. Historically, it's mostly been up to wiki users to set up their own pages. Now, how much detail is present in the index listing is another issue. L., at some points, went way overboard. But as I mentioned, he's collaborative. He doesn't explode when nudged and warned. He doesn't sock disruptively.

::I assume that WikiIndex would index a wiki on terrorism. It would index porn wikis. WikiIndex can and should develop guidelines to cover matters like content warnings. Sites reported as hosting malware should be flagged. Sites with material not suitable for children should be flagged. (Would Wikipedia be flagged? How about Commons?)

::Thanks, in any case. --[[User:Abd|Abd]] ([[User talk:Abd|talk]]) 16:23, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

== Template:W ==

Is there a reason why it's necessary to delete [[:Template:W]], which has a number of [[Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:W|transclusions]]? If so, a deletion summary would have made it unnecessary to ask the reason. Thanks, [[User:Leucosticte|Leucosticte]] ([[User talk:Leucosticte|talk]]) 20:20, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
:'''Undeleted''' That was an error and I have no idea how I made it: I checked all of the unused templates from the report and somehow ended up deleting that... Good eye. My apologies. [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 20:22, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

== BoyWiki ==

Koavf, you deleted [[BoyWiki]]. So that we can see the content and edit history, I request that you undelete. It would be fine if you blanked it or replaced it with a warning about the content. I can read it in history, then. I did spend a fair amount of time yesterday reviewing that wiki and it appears that it has been misunderstood. It does not advocate illegal activity. It may have some users who do or who have, but I found only one user there who even appeared to personally support illegal activity, and that is our user Leudosticte, who always presents that appearance, it is his specialty. He is not admin there and began fairly minor contributions in March 2014. It is a very long-standing wiki. Thanks! --[[User:Abd|Abd]] ([[User talk:Abd|talk]]) 20:13, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
:'''Undeletion''' I could do that or e-mail you the contents of the page if you want. [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 20:14, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
::I prefer undeletion because then anyone can read the content, if there is to be a discussion, which may occur. Because of controversy over this page, if it's undeleted, it could be blanked, as I suggested, or it could be moved into my user space, another possibility. It could be no-indexed. Whatever is necessary to address concerns.
::For email, I would prefer a full XML export with page history, because it can be relevant. Thanks. --[[User:Abd|Abd]] ([[User talk:Abd|talk]]) 20:39, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
:::Both Jason and Arcane approved the deletion as well. Noindex isn't going to achieve the goal that Koavf was concerned about, which was eliminating the reason for RationalWiki users to badmouth WikiIndex. The page will still be visible to RationalWikians, and therefore they'll still have something to say about it. [[User:Leucosticte|Leucosticte]] ([[User talk:Leucosticte|talk]]) 23:25, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
::::Fascinating. Elsewhere in the wikisphere, Leucosticte has complained about the deletion as one more proof of how abusive so many wikis are. He made a point to tell the major active BoyWiki user about the deletion here. Here, he complained about it and about the practice that deleted it. He then suggested a bet. [http://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=WikiIndex_talk:Prohibited_content&diff=186950&oldid=186949][http://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=WikiIndex_talk:Prohibited_content&diff=next&oldid=186969] I declined to bet. However, I had been thinking of seeing if the page could be restored. That would start by looking at it. Nathan doesn't want the page restored, he's much happier as the outcast, the champion of the rejected scapegoats. (And he's busy attempting to stir them up.) He doesn't want consensus on the matter, he wants dispute, which is why he's telling you, now, that two other sysops "approved" the deletion.
::::I asked you, Koavf, for a very simple reason: wiki tradition: you deleted, so I asked you. You accepted, but have not undeleted yet. No rush. It was just a request. I can ask someone else or create a discussion, and I can wait. It is *always* less disruptive to ask a deleting sysop to undelete, first, and I did this on Wikipedia, saving articles that way. The more disruptive way on Wikipedia is to start a Deletion Review, which pulls every deletionist or inclusionist troll out of the woodwork. If there is a good reason for undeletion, most admins will look at it. Deleting with blanking is a way to find a temporary consensus, here, and then to allow deeper consideration. On Wikipedia with an article, I might request it be restored to my user space, I did that many times. However, discussing whether or not BoyWiki is offensive is very likely itself to create disruption, I've seen this kind of discussion explode many times. Frankly, I think we should avoid the whole problem by setting guidelines, which is happening with [[WikiIndex:Prohibited content]]. In my view, Boywiki does not meet the guidelines for prohibition, ''except as Leuscosticte attempted to write them.'' He's become entirely transparent. His motives I can guess, but, in the end, he knows himself best.
::::BoyWiki has been around a long time. I wanted to see the history of the page. All this controversy around listing wikis started with Leucosticte.
::::The argument about RationalWiki takes the cake. The complaints from RationalWiki were not about that page, they were about Leucosticte. [http://rationalwiki.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:WikiIndex&oldid=1337410 Here] is the page. They are ''not'' going to complain if the BoyWiki page is restored and blanked. They are not complete idiots. By the way, Leucosticte claims they ban anyone who disagrees with them. Huh! I'm still a sysop there. I found it useless, but I an ''not'' banned. I got no flack for that commentary, which was very mild by RatWiki standards. RatWiki ''runs'' on flames. --[[User:Abd|Abd]] ([[User talk:Abd|talk]]) 00:59, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
:::::The RationalWikians' complaint is, specifically, that I dominate WikiIndex. If sysops are observed to be overriding my decisions, then the RWians have no grounds for that complaint. [[User:Leucosticte|Leucosticte]] ([[User talk:Leucosticte|talk]]) 01:48, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

[[User:Abd/Deletion questions]] collects deletions from the deletion log that had no apparent reason or where there might be some question about the reason. As it happens, all were done by you. This is not a demand that you do anything, nor is it an accusation of error. However, if you choose to do so, you could comment there. I have not decided how to proceed on the issue of deletion policy, though I do have some ideas. Your input is invited and welcome. == Shoot first, ask later? ==

I'm being called rude sometimes, because I instantly revert edits that reverted mine without asking.
*'''But''': The one who needlessly reverts my edits without asking me first, why I did it or misses the chance to tell me in the first place what he THINKS I would have done wrong, that actually is the rude guy!

Now, in case of Y. my edit was:

<nowiki>{{language|en|N}}</nowiki>
Summary: Please adjust and add as appropriate, see [[Category:EnglishSpeakers]] and [[Category:Language]].

His user page started English. If that is not his first language, he can change that himself. There is not need whatsoever for You to do anything there. And there is no danger ahead that forces You to take immediate action.
But You go over it like fire patrol!
The result is, that edit-war like comments are on his user page. This is what You invited without consideration.
So, don't call me rude now, accept that You are trigger happy.
It's not the first time. It is a consistent pattern of Your behaviour.
[[User:Manorainjan|Manorainjan]] ([[User talk:Manorainjan|talk]]) 10:55, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

:'''What?''' How am ''I'' any less invited to ''his'' userpage than ''you''...? If you really want to know what languages he speaks, rather than make up guesses, you could: 1.) ask him, 2.) leave it be as it's his userpage, or 3.) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Yann look here]. And even if I'm rude (how?) that doesn't stop you from being rude as well... This post is just bewildering nonsense. [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 11:20, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

::You are getting it wrong on purpose to evade the argument I actually made. Bad move! Shall I add stubborn and malevolent to the list? I did in no way altogether compare You and me regarding being invited to his user page. If You had done the same thing as I did, just from Your perspective, that You assume his first language is French, and if You therefore added <nowiki>{{language|fr|N}}</nowiki>to his user page, I would have let it be and trusted Y. to set it right if he sees reason to do so even if You would have not supplied "Please adjust and add as appropriate, see [[:Category:FrenchSpeakers]] and [[:Category:Language]]" in the summary field. I do not see that anybody was "invited" to his user page and therefore anybody who edits it is kind of trespassing. For this reason I'm always adding the comment to make clear it is up to the (mostly new) user, he/she is free to edit it. You can see from this, if You got eyes to see, that I'm not rude there, I'm educative and attentive.[[User:Manorainjan|Manorainjan]] ([[User talk:Manorainjan|talk]]) 14:41, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

:::'''Wrong''' I'm not getting it wrong on purpose: I just have no idea what you're talking about. Yann ''isn't'' a new user and ''has'' used #babel before. He can edit his userpage just fine so I don't know why anyone else feels the need to edit it for him. Welcoming a new user is one thing but this is another: it's pointless. I didn't claim you were rude for this action (but I have before for several others and stand behind it)--I don't think it's rude; I think it's confusing and unnecessary. I'll let him decide if he wants to apply #babel to his userpage and I don't see why we should fight over it. [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 18:26, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
:::'''Also''' As a point of order, I'm not ''assuming'' anything about the languages he understands: he points them out himself. If you had made a click or two, you would know. [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 18:27, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

For a man who has no idea what I'm talking about You are quite unerringly evading that point I'm making. From this I can safely assume that You understood very well but are reluctant to admit that You are at fault. Did You really think You could fool me like that? No need to answer, the question was rhetorically. And no need for me to continue this, because I saw You got the point even though that would no mean You would be able to learn from that. But that's Your problem not mine. [[User:Manorainjan|Manorainjan]] ([[User talk:Manorainjan|talk]]) 08:46, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

:'''Sysop''' There aren't many formal rules around here, including how someone can become an admin/sysop. Being active and not causing conflicts is a good start. :'''Edit summaries''' I explained why in my [http://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=OmegaWiki&diff=prev&oldid=190072 edit summary here]: Castilian and Spanish are the same language. There were no subcategories for users anyway, so I don't understand your point. ''If'' Castilian were its own language, then it could be recreated with the appropriate subcategories anyway. :'''Redirects''' If you redirect a category, there can still be content in it, which is exactly what would happen if someone used <nowiki>{{tag|Castilian}}</nowiki>. Redirecting in the main namespace is different than in categories. [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 09:59, 21 June 2015 (PDT)

I think, tat redirecting is the same in all namespaces. But, as You pointed out, it does not prevent anybody to fill a redirected category with content. On the other hand, a non-existent category can also be filled with content. Deleting this category does not prevent anybody from using those tags. It creates [[RedLink]]s. An those redlinks tempt others to re-create this category. Therefore I think it is better to keep it and comment the redirect. That preserves the argumentation which explains why this category is not to be used/filled. That would apply also to such notorious cases as [[:Category:Computer]] vs. [[:Category:Computers]].[[User_talk:Manorainjan|'''<span style="color: orange;">Manorainjan</span>''']] 13:15, 21 June 2015 (PDT)

If one keeps unwanted categories as commented redirects and adds [[:Category:Unwanted Categories]] to them, this would create a handy instrument for maintenance. But if one deletes unwanted categories, that would delete all knowledge/experience that led to the decision of this category to be unwanted. the wiki would not grow in experience. This would be another step towards a Sisyphean task.[[User_talk:Manorainjan|'''<span style="color: orange;">Manorainjan</span>''']] 13:20, 21 June 2015 (PDT)
:'''Unused categories''' Do you know of any other wikis which keep an indefinitely large number of categories as redirects simply because they could be used? I have started a vote on said topic here. --This is MY book, and I'm gonna READ IT!!! 09:56, 18 January 2017 (PST)

How to deal with others[edit]

Telling someone "don't be a jerk" is generally wrong — especially if it's true. It upsets the other person and reduces the chance that they'll listen to what you say.

Focus on behaviour, not on individuals. Say what you want and why you want it. Say why you think the other person's behaviour is counterproductive. Assume good faith to the maximum extent possible. If you don't understand why someone is doing something, ask. Don't rush to complain until you are sure that good faith negotiations can't work. Understand before insisting on being understood.

Remember that your perception can be wrong. If the other person is writing in an unfamiliar language, or has a different cultural background, you may misunderstand their intentions.

Above all, be genuine. Don't ask questions when you know the answer. Don't say you want one thing if you want another. Don't try to persuade people of things that aren't true. Do not respond to jerkitude in kind, no matter how tempting it may be.

Exerpt from: here. You do not follow Your own rules. --Manorainjan 09:12, 25 January 2017 (PST)

Okay Why are you being coy? Koavf (talk) 09:16, 25 January 2017 (PST)
I'm certainly not coy. And You should not call me a jerk either. It would be going against wp:Wikipedia:No personal attacks wouldn't it? --Manorainjan 09:19, 25 January 2017 (PST)
PA? Since you love wiki-lawyering: I didn't call you a jerk. Koavf (talk) 09:25, 25 January 2017 (PST)

I do not love what You have linked to, not even knew it. Your link does not lead to any specific page/artikle. Correct Your link, if anything is to be said by this! --Manorainjan 09:33, 25 January 2017 (PST)

Exhibit A The page is a redirect (and you obviously know what that is) leading to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikilawyering. Stop being so abrasive. Koavf (talk) 11:03, 25 January 2017 (PST)
Now, after reading it, I ask You, why You are pointing this to me?
"A common mistake of misguided advocacy is when a person appoints himself a mediator and proceeds with judging the sides by telling them whether they are right or wrong instead of helping the sides to better state their positions and to find common grounds. It is not uncommon that one side is indeed wrong, and in such a case a mediator begins to appear to take sides thus alienating the wrong side and triggering their defense instincts, further entrenching them against an amicable resolution."
This is exactly what You are used to do. Now I got a link for You to read it carefully: wp:Psychological projection Manorainjan 11:16, 25 January 2017 (PST)
Direction I am directing this to you because your behavior is the common denominator of the problems and that's also obviously by design. Koavf (talk) 11:20, 25 January 2017 (PST)

Do You understand the nature of projection, even remotely? Manorainjan 11:24, 25 January 2017 (PST)

Projection Yes. Do you understand what I'm telling you about your behavior and how it is inappropriate? Koavf (talk) 11:34, 25 January 2017 (PST)
You are not asking for understanding. You are asking for obedience. --Manorainjan 02:14, 26 January 2017 (PST)
So? They aren't mutually exclusive. You're being willfully ignorant again--you keep on playing these childish games and I don't understand what the end point is. You know what you're doing, you know why you are doing it, and you know that you need to stop. Koavf (talk) 14:36, 26 January 2017 (PST)

Unblock request[edit]

Hello, I'm TheTVFan. I requested my account to be blocked due to Manoraninjan's harassment. As I see, he is temporarily blocked, so I would like to ask you to unblock my account, so that I start contributing here again. --62.212.73.141 11:25, 27 January 2017 (PST)

That is such a sad state of affairs - when a valid wiki contributor requests to be personally blocked due to harassment of another user! Can you provide some diffs / links to said conflicts - as I have not followed your plight? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 12:22, 27 January 2017 (PST)
Hello Hoof Hearted, you can see some examples of his bad behaviour here (personal attacks), here (harassing) and here (I'm not sure if it's him, but it's a suspect anonymous). Thank you for your reply. Sorry for my use of proxy, but I had to, because in the past the aforementioned user tried to trace my location. 103.10.197.11 12:46, 27 January 2017 (PST)
No need to apologise - I am fully aware of just how sneaky he can be. Now unblocked - welcome back to the fold. :-)) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 16:18, 27 January 2017 (PST)
Thanks as well To you and to Hoof/Sean (please feel free to always post on my talk or step in for admin tasks when I am busy at work). Let's get going on this wiki, guys. Koavf (talk) 18:52, 27 January 2017 (PST)
Thanks to both of you :) --TheTVFan (talk) 00:41, 28 January 2017 (PST)

Footer copyright text[edit]

Are you aware of how to edit the copyright warning as shown at the footer of every page? Someone previously suggested MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning, but its text looks nothing like what is shown in our footer. I'm asking because both the license AND the fair use disclaimer are both linked (together) to the off-site Creative Commons license page - and there should be two separate links. Best, Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 23:21, 31 January 2017 (PST)

Local Settings Unfortunately, it's not accessible through the MediaWiki interface but rather much deeper in the settings. One would need access to the server for LocalSettings.php. I should get access to that soon but do not have it now. Koavf (talk) 23:37, 31 January 2017 (PST)
OK, thanks. Can you ask Ray if I can also have access? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 03:59, 1 February 2017 (PST)
Of course He and I are scheduled to have a chat this Saturday or next and I'd be happy to let you have access to the developer side of things--you are a trusted user. Koavf (talk) 09:28, 1 February 2017 (PST)

Wiki.Wiki[edit]

Hello Koavf: is Wiki.Wiki still active, or is it going to be closed? I'm asking because I saw that they are not accepting new wikis anymore, and I asked this to Ray but he never replied. Thanks, --TheTVFan (talk) 09:46, 1 February 2017 (PST)

No clue Your guess is as good as mine. Although there is definitely some overlap between users here and there (like Jason and Ray), I am not associated with .wiki at all. I imagine that it is like many of the new flood of TLDs which are underused and many persons thought they could monetize them but couldn't. That's just speculation, of course. Koavf (talk) 20:10, 1 February 2017 (PST)
Indeed, I was only making speculations like you :-). I thought of the possible "closure" because of the inactivity of users Jason and BrandonCSSanders who were active here in the past. Thanks for your reply. Best, --TheTVFan (talk) 05:57, 2 February 2017 (PST)

Sysop[edit]

Hello Koavf, as you are a Staff member, I would like to ask you for administrator rights on this wiki. I will monitor the wiki very actively and the use of the tools can help me in doing maintenance. Best, --TheTVFan (talk) 03:11, 4 February 2017 (PST)

Thanks I think it's probably fine but let me get an idea of what kind of tasks you have in mind or ways that you want to improve the site and user experience. I don't think it's a problem to give you the rights--I probably will--but I'd like to have an idea of what your interests are. Koavf (talk) 13:03, 4 February 2017 (PST)
Hello Koavf, thank you for your reply. Sorry if I sent you an email, there were temporary problems in replying here. I would like to do the maintenance of the wiki, with the removal of useless redirects, the removal of unnecessary categories and the creation of new ones, the localisation of all pages on the wiki in the main languages, and the removal of possible spam and vandalism. Best, --TheTVFan (talk) 13:40, 4 February 2017 (PST)
Thanks for giving me the rights. --TheTVFan (talk) 13:46, 4 February 2017 (PST)

Vandalism[edit]

Hello Koavf, please see the new discussion on the Community portal. Best, --TheTVFan (talk) 11:48, 6 February 2017 (PST)

Bot[edit]

Hello, I see that lots of pages still have the Template:Inactive - can you please mark me as a bot to change them to Template:Wiki? Thanks, --TheTVFan (talk) 12:14, 6 February 2017 (PST)

Conversion That would be a little tricky. I actually did it once or twice in Preview just to see what it would look like but they came out malformed. I'd like to also take a few days to see if Mark is available to leave his feedback about the template. Koavf (talk) 12:15, 6 February 2017 (PST)
Okay, let's wait for Mark's ideas about this topic. Anyway, I can change some of them manually, to make them come out well. TheTVFan (talk) 12:16, 6 February 2017 (PST)
Thanks And I fear that blocking may be necessary for HAL--that rename request was bizarre and looks like an attempt to 1.) disguise bad behavior and 2.) impersonate you. Koavf (talk) 12:18, 6 February 2017 (PST)
I also think the same, but maybe we should wait for community's thoughts about it. Also, I removed some of his messages as they were very off-topic. --TheTVFan (talk) 12:19, 6 February 2017 (PST)
I blocked him because he is using a vandalbot! We should revert his edits, he destroyed the pages... I did this page, WikiIndex talk:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage: if you agree, starting from now, only users who have been verified on that page will have access to AutoWikiBrowser. This is to avoid mass vandalism. --TheTVFan (talk) 12:33, 6 February 2017 (PST)

Unblock me[edit]

I am TheTVFan. I did not request to be blocked. Unblock my account. 103.10.197.194 06:21, 7 February 2017 (PST)

User pages[edit]

Thanks, so far. My user page too, please. What about blocking that IP(range) like it is blocked on all wikipedia projects? Would it be possible to protect all user pages against IP-edit by default? --Manorainjan 10:30, 11 February 2017 (PST)

Weird. The tab was open in my browser... I'll block them if they cause more problems but until then, I don't think it's necessary. If we did that, you would have been blocked here based on what you did at Ward's Wiki. Koavf (talk) 12:03, 11 February 2017 (PST)
Also, regarding restricting edit rights by namespace is possible, yes. For instance, the MediaWiki namespace. Koavf (talk) 12:17, 11 February 2017 (PST)
But User and their Talk would be the same namespace. I'm afraid that would not help. Maybe as parameter of a user-box-template? --Manorainjan 12:35, 11 February 2017 (PST)
No, they would not. I'm sorry but you do not understand this at all--user namespace and user talk namespace are not the "same namespace". In MediaWiki, User is ns-2 and User talk is ns-3. Just like how the MediaWiki namespace (ns-8) is restricted and the MediaWiki talk namespace (ns-9) is not. Notice how you can post to MediaWiki talk:Sidebar but you cannot modify MediaWiki:Sidebar. Koavf (talk) 13:04, 11 February 2017 (PST)
Right, now while You mention it, I remember. I was just recently reading about the namespaces while I was setting up my own wiki ;-) So it would be well possible IP-protect all user pages. So I suggest You do that. It will make Your life easier. My pages are protected anyway ;-) And I can continue to work on my wiki :-) --Manorainjan 13:19, 11 February 2017 (PST)
No problem. Thanks for your hard work here and I hope that you decide that you have the time to devote to this community again in a constructive fashion. Either way, I hope for the best with you and your wiki as well as your life in MeatSpace. Koavf (talk) 13:38, 11 February 2017 (PST)

Guten Tag[edit]

Now, you made me come here, thanks for that, looks interesting. Dan Koehl (talk) 12:44, 14 February 2017 (PST)

Danke und Willkommen! As you can maybe see, I am staff here. Although I didn't found the project (with Mark, Ray, Ted, etc.) I've been here since close to the beginning. I'm slowly taking the lead on some day-to-day things here but Mark still checks in regularly (as you can see). We have a few helpful admins, too. I hope you have the time and energy to add something here as well. Thanks, Dan. Koavf (talk) 13:04, 14 February 2017 (PST)
Yes, I hope so too, I plan to put up wikis on a couple of websites again. I used to have the old python script some 12 years ago, after I found meatball and such. And this seems to be some hub or index for all different kind of wikis, right? Dan Koehl (talk) 13:13, 14 February 2017 (PST)
Exactly. It's about wikis, broadly speaking: the software, communities, history, research, events, and personalities. Anything you can add about the WikiSphere is appreciated. Koavf (talk) 13:43, 14 February 2017 (PST)

Buggy software[edit]

Hi, have you noticed the current bugs in the WikiIndex software? I am constantly plagued by three separate (but may be related) issues. First, I regularly get a white page with 'database errors' (or similar wording), secondly, I consistently get a HTTP 500 error - on what seems to be large-ish articles/templates, and finally, it adamantly refuses to allow me any image file uploads.

Have you noticed these? Do you have any ideas, or answers on how to fix it? Regards, Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 07:40, 29 April 2017 (PDT)

I have noticed the first two errors but not the last one (as I haven't tried to upload anything). Around the turn of the year, I was talking to Mark and Ray about taking over day-to-day maintenance of the site but that fell off as I got busy. Recently, my computer broke and very recently snapped in half, so that has also been a hiccup for me. I don't have access to the server so I can't do any real maintenance of the site (and whether or not I have the skill is an open question, too). Koavf (talk) 07:51, 29 April 2017 (PDT)
Ouch - your computer issue sounds painful!!  :-P
I presume Brandon still has access to the server? Do you know how to contact him off-wiki? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 08:08, 29 April 2017 (PDT)
Brandon does, yes but 1.) I do not know him and 2.) it's my understanding that he doesn't really have availability. :/ You can certainly try or try via Ray but that's all I have at the moment. I want to get back into WikiIndex but I'm going to have to get a computer first (currently using my work machine). I know that's disappointing but it's all I have at the moment. Koavf (talk) 08:19, 29 April 2017 (PDT)
Brandon found the issue tonight, and has fixed it. We had an errant backup script going which ate up all of the disk space, very sorry -- should be ok now. This summer we're going to put some more time into it to with the goal of migrating to a stand alone implementation of MediaWiki so it's more stable and can be maintained by anyone with MW skills. Raymond King | talk 21:22, 2 May 2017 (PDT)
Brandon and Ray, this is really positive news. I hope that I can play a more consistent role in the future. Koavf (talk) 00:24, 3 May 2017 (PDT)

outdated DIFF-Links[edit]

Since wikiindex.com does not work any more, all old DIFF-links from that time do not work any more. http://www.wikiindex.com/index.php?title=User_talk:Ray_King&curid=4230&diff=33754&oldid=33748&rcid=35220 Can You make a BOT that changes com to wiki on talk pages? --Manorainjan 07:15, 9 May 2017 (PDT)

That doesn't need a bot, it just needs the Special:ReplaceText feature. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 07:39, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
I see, the Extension:Replace Text would do I think. --Manorainjan 08:38, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
Nice spotting, Manorainjan. And thanks, Sean for doing this. Alternately, AWB would do the trick. Koavf (talk) 08:44, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
I was surprised, that Sean did it in a minute, because I thought, the definition would require some regex and therefore a little more thinking. On purpose I wrote about diff-links. There are a number of other mentioning of the .com, which are not diff-links and where the change does not make sense, rather distorts the meaning. Example. --Manorainjan 09:54, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
Special:ReplaceText is a fantastic extension, very easy to use, and very 'targetable'! Specifically, when I set it to run, I selected only Talk pages in all namespaces. I've never used AutoWikiBrowser (AWB), so I can't comment, however, I suspect AWB would need specific configuration. The really funky thing about ReplaceText is once you have set it running, it will 'poll' before making changes (to prevent an edit conflict), and will pause itself, and restart automatically. Obviously, nothing is perfect, and for the rare individual examples as highlighted by Manor, a simple undo - with the reason for reverting in the edit summary. Love it for its simplicity and effectiveness! Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 10:33, 9 May 2017 (PDT)

Seems You did not check the other replacements: http://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=WikiIndex_talk:Add_a_Wiki&diff=prev&oldid=197977 Basically not simply wikiindex.com was to be changed in wikiindex.org, but ://wikiindex.com/index.php would have to be the search phrase. Manorainjan 12:01, 9 May 2017 (PDT)

Fixed your latest find. Your idea of using /index.php might not work properly - because that is only (normally) used in URLs, and not rendered wikitext. I am fairly confident Special:ReplaceText works only on rendered wikitext, and not actual URLs. Could be wrong though. I need to think more on this. I think it only changed 37-ish articles, so not a huge job to check them all. Did you find any it missed out? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 12:19, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
When You look at the example which I provided originally and how the extension changed it: http://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=User_talk:Aussiepete&diff=197974&oldid=33758 then how do You get the idea, that replace text would work on the rendered text (only)? --Manorainjan 12:41, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
You are actually correct. All diffs work by using a full external link URL. I forgot diffs weren't wikilinks. Have you found any more? Appreciate your help, thank-you. :-)) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 17:10, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
As You can see in this Example, diffs can be noted down without mentioning any URL and are, as such independent from the domain name. Those notations would not need any replacement after a change in domain name. So You can see, that not all diffs work "by using a full external link URL" Manorainjan 17:56, 9 May 2017 (PDT)

User rights[edit]

Hi JAK, good to see you online!

Can you please make a couple of changes to members of the staff user group? Jason really ought to be removed - I'm struggling to find the rationale as to why he was added. And can you please add me? I am trying to look through some of the backend stuff to work out why we still have these annoying bugs. Don't worry - if I do not understand something, I will just look, but leave as is without making any changes.

Best, Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 15:17, 26 May 2017 (PDT)

Sean, I can happily add you as staff but I don't think it will give you as much access as you would like. Ultimately, what both you and I need are access to the true backend on the server. I was not ever privy to who Jason is nor why he was added as staff but I know that he has something to do with the .wiki TLD and so does Ray. Maybe they are friends? Business partners? Either way, he's not active, so I've removed him as staff and added you. Koavf (talk) 15:40, 26 May 2017 (PDT)
Brandon CS Sanders is another inactive member of staff group. --185.182.81.39 09:43, 28 May 2017 (PDT)
He is but he may well make changes to the wiki in the future. Koavf (talk) 18:49, 28 May 2017 (PDT)

Spam redirects[edit]

Hello, in Jason's contributions there are many spam redirects, can you delete them? --185.182.81.39 09:42, 28 May 2017 (PDT)

Manorainjan's behaviour[edit]

Hello. Just asking you this question: can you warn Manorainjan? Because I told him that he, among with Rock-O-Jello and Amanda, was an active user and they all deserved a promotion. He attacked me saying that I am part of a "crew" against him. --13Reasons (talk) 08:21, 4 June 2017 (PDT)

I can see why you're upset but I don't think this warrants any intervention, honestly. Just step away and move on--he's going to think what he thinks. Koavf (talk) 13:45, 4 June 2017 (PDT)

Name change[edit]

Can you change my nickname to CcZc? Thanks in advance, --13Reasons (talk) 02:59, 23 June 2017 (PDT)

Means: "There is no 'crew' in this wiki" that You are the only one, who opens one account after another, applies for new names, asks for being blocked or unblocked, blanks and undoes ones own user page back and forth? — preceding unsigned comment added by Manorainjan (talkcontribs) – .
Manorainjan, as you are constantly harassing me, on and off wiki, I am leaving forever. But remember: this site is in very bad conditions, and will soon die. And you are the only one responsible of this. Like Koavf said, "you are a consistently rude and provocative person and it drives away other editors". --13Reasons (talk) 06:18, 23 June 2017 (PDT)
Just for matters of curiosity: Where in the world did we meet off wiki? Tell me, so I know whom I "harassed" there. ::::Even though this site makes no real progress, it is not in a bad condition at all. And it will certainly not die soon or any time soon or in in any kind of near future within the short span of Your attention. That is, because Ray is taking care of it. And Ray is the direct opposite of You, he is refined, mature, highly intelligent and absolutely trustworthy. How could a kid that goes from "block my account for an infinite amount of time!" (BTW: q.e.d ;-) back and forth within 4 minutes have any mentionable impact on this wiki? This is not Your usual My Little Pony playground. --Manorainjan 09:54, 23 June 2017 (PDT)
I have no problems saying that I am Hal. You sent some messages to me on Wikipedia some time ago. How could a rude troll like you have any mentionable impact on this wiki? I made more than 100 pages here and improved many others. How come you have so much respect for Ray, but behave badly with Mark, another admin? Anyway, Ray left the site a long time ago and sometimes makes minor edits to pages and user rights (he also left the Wiki.Wiki project, in which I demonstrated the incompetence of old staff member Jason, who got demoted). I don't understand why you think you are a good presence for this website when you're the one destroying it... remember your one week block. --13Reasons (talk) 11:07, 23 June 2017 (PDT)
There is not even a user page for 13Reasons on en-wikipedia. So, what are You talking about? Why those deliberately nebulous statements? You know pretty well one can set links to any wiki incident. When You are not using exact links, it means You try to lie about something. --Manorainjan 11:45, 23 June 2017 (PDT)
You are right, Manorainjan, I was just here to troll around. We never met off-wiki :-) When you spoke about the crew, did it mean that you understood that I'm HAL-9000? Indeed, I am that user. --13Reasons (talk) 09:51, 26 June 2017 (PDT)

wikiFactor[edit]

Hope you are keeping busy!  :-P

The wikiFactor (wF) issue . . . I'm sure we are all aware that both the entire Wikimedia Foundation range of wikis, all of Wika, and any independent wiki running the latest versions of MediaWiki (MW) can now no longer output page view data, and so we can no longer update their specific wF. It was for that very reason why I amended the boilerplates with – <br>wikiFactor as of: 2012-MM-DD – to allow both page count and wikiFactor data to remain on our articles, and make it clear of the separate dates for both values. Our own WikiIndex article page illustrates this (though that page uses live, dynamic data for the page count and page count date). For articles that have had their wF data deleted, look back through its edit history to find required info.

What are your thoughts? Best. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 11:32, 14 November 2017 (PST)

I started this topic long ago Category_talk:Active_administrators_of_this_wiki#wF_asking_from_others_what_we_do_not_provide_ourselves.3F We just need to install the extension. --Manorainjan 12:01, 14 November 2017 (PST)
Well, I don't really see the value in retaining WikiFactor information if it's woefully out of date. All this really says is something about the relatively popularity of certain pages five or six years ago... If a site has some metric to measure it within the past (e.g.) 24 months, that may be useful but at some point, it's just a relic. Koavf (talk) 21:16, 14 November 2017 (PST)
What about installing the extension on WikiIndex? Manorainjan 02:42, 15 November 2017 (PST)
Ray gave me staff permissions with the goal of having me be able to access the server directly to change setting in MediaWiki but that has yet to happen and Brandon is MIA. Koavf (talk) 11:21, 15 November 2017 (PST)
Don't worry. Installing an extension is mostly rather easy. I did that also on my own wiki. As soon as You have set up FTP successfully is is a matter of minutes. --Manorainjan 11:32, 15 November 2017 (PST)
So, what is the progress in this matter? Just now I added T4-Wiki a wiki of 2006 that is indeed using wF (of 119). It is using MW version 1.25.1, higher than ours. So, that should not pose a problem really. --Manorainjan 04:45, 5 December 2017 (PST)
There is none. Koavf (talk) 09:06, 5 December 2017 (PST)

Wikipedia.org oddity[edit]

Hi Justin, you are obviously highly knowledgable regarding Wikipedia, so I hope you don't mind if I ask you a <cough> 'interesting' question. On the Alexa site for Wikipedia.org, near the bottom of the page, it lists "Other Sites Owned". Numbers 1, 3, and 5 are explanatory, but 2 and 4 have . . . erm . . . raised my eyebrows! Number 2 (at time I viewed Alexa) was nekkid.info (warning: NOT suitable for work/school/minors etc) is a XXX p0rn site, and number 4 was searchbastard.com (now goes to a parking domain site).

So . . . is Alexa correct? Does Wikipedia actually own those two? If they do, I am guessing (though not defaming) Jimbo was the original owner. Does Wikipedia and / or the WMF have any need, or justification for owning those? My only guess is the potential revenue stream from number 2 - which might be a valid commercial reason, but is it ethical?

Do you fancy asking some questions in the appropriate places? Understand if not, though. Best. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 11:03, 10 December 2017 (PST)

Ha. I don't know if you know about the history of the site but I imagine it's somehow related to Bomis: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bomis. That is a weird find... Koavf (talk) 12:24, 10 December 2017 (PST)
Wikipedia as such does not own anything at all. If some WP-thingy owns anything, it is the Wikimedia Foundation Inc. which is a non-profit organisation which has registered the domain wikipedia.org and similar domains. Manorainjan 16:55, 10 December 2017 (PST)
Manorainjan – you had better go and tell Alexa that they got the internet wrong!!!
Koavf — I was only following a link that Manor posted! Thanks for the update. :-) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 18:40, 10 December 2017 (PST)

Welcome back to a functioning WikiIndex[edit]

Hi koavf, I nearly gave up on WikiIndex! Glad it has been fixed. I noticed you held one of the new account requests from Dominica. I found a likely URL from the requesters email, but I don't speak Spanish, but to me, it looks just like a blog only. Can you please check if https://WikiDominicana.com is an actual wiki? Best regards --Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 20:53, 26 April 2021 (UTC)

Yeah, this is some kind of spam tourism thing and doesn't appear to be someone's personal blog. It appears to be written by a bot. Thanks for keeping this ship sailing, Sean. Koavf (talk) 18:31, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
