To opt out is to decide not to participate.
There are many efforts to connect wiki sites; the WikiTourBus (and its bus stops), WikiNodes, WikiIndex, etc. We can choose to respect the wishes of wiki communities.

On an individual level, a respectful community allows an editor to opt out of the real names guideline, for example.
This stemmed from an idea discussed at RecentChangesCamp (RCC) with KennethTyler: WikiNodes:OptOut
Also a conversation between Raymond King, MarkDilley and Ward Cunningham about this happended at RecentChangesCamp, and we all felt comfortable that the wiki community would figure out how to deal with the next challenge that was going to come up, even if it was more wiki spam.
