Enciclopedia Libre Universal en Español is a Spanish-language wiki encyclopedia, released under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 license (CC-BY-SA 3.0). It uses the MediaWiki software.
The Enciclopedia Libre was founded by contributors to the Spanish-language Wikipedia who decided to start an independent project. Led by Edgar Enyedy, they left Wikipedia on 26 February 2002, and forked the new website, provided by the University of Seville for free, with the freely licensed articles of the Spanish-language Wikipedia.
Although the two communities started out with roughly the same content and contributors, in 2004 Wikipedia started to overtake Enciclopedia Libre in terms of articles and activity and now has far and away more content, including quality articles. There are approximately 18 times as many articles on Spanish Wikipedia as on Enciclopedia Libre.
In late 2014, the site went down without explanation for several months. The University of Seville web site does not mention why it was down, but it came back in 2015.
