:I wonder if in this type of instance, it might be better, instead of blocking right away, to either take the matter off-wiki to a synchronous, private communication method like Gmail chat, which can often be quite helpful for resolving conflicts; or for either the sysop or the user who has been threatened with a block to file a Request for Comment and see what others think. This user's style is blunt and combative, but he's not like the users whose behavior is such obvious vandalism that they can be blocked summarily and uncontroversially, or who cause such widespread havoc that they need to be blocked as an emergency measure. Also, it would be helpful if you could use a summary when blocking. Thanks. Leucosticte (talk) 20:25, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

I would not call that 'blunt and combative' rather straight and challenging ;-) M.

A warm welcome to my talk / discussion page, 192.168.144.2 :-)

If you wish to talk to me about a new subject not already listed here, please click on the 'new section' (or '+') tab at the top of the screen to start a new subject. Or if you wish to reply to an existing comment (either on my talk page or any other talk page), please click on the section [edit] to the right of the relevant subject header line, and please indent your replies with one (or more) colon(s) (:) as appropriate. Please, PLEASE add your signature (-- ~~~~) to all comments or replies you make.

If comments or questions are asked on this page, I will leave my answer here (so please add my talk page to your 'watchlist'). For comments or questions left on other pages, my replies or answers will be left on those specific pages (so again, please add those to your watchlist if you wish to follow any replies).

If you miss previous discussions (which are now no longer visible), you may look through any historical items of discussion by clicking on the 'history' tab at the top of the page. Occasionally, I might remove and archive completed topics which may no longer be relevant, and there is no point in having a cluttered talk page!

Ensis Wiki

Do you happen to recognize, right off the bat, the wiki engine used by Ensis Wiki? If we knew that, we might be able to infer the RecentChanges URL too. Thanks, Leucosticte (talk) 10:07, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Nathan, and Happy New Year. Its urls confirm its written in PHP, bur it isn't the obvious PhpWiki, and I don't immediately recognise it! I suggest having a look at some of the other PHP-based wiki engines to see what looks similar. Sorry I can't be any more help. :-/ Best Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 14:35, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
Happy New Year to you too. Maybe it isn't even a wiki; maybe they just call themselves that because it sounds cool. Leucosticte (talk) 14:36, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
Maybe . . . however, at the foot of every page it states "All copyrights held by respective authors/owners", and on their main page, it states "Editing this Wiki is left in the hands of a select few volunteers, however you can help out. If you are an author you can submit documents for inclusion using the form on the contact page." Perhaps you can contact them and request an account? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 14:47, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
I guess it's likely not a real wiki as every page has their own php file? As for MediaWiki, every page is under "index.php" (or "pmwiki.php" for PmWiki) --YiFei | talk 15:09, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
Sometimes it's hard to figure out where to draw the line between a wiki and non-wiki website. See Differences between wikis and other kinds of websites. Leucosticte (talk) 15:54, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
Unless someone signs up for an account there, I suggest we leave the entry on here, but mark it with the NotAWiki. The only real way to tell if it's a genuine wiki is to search for page histories . . . . Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 22:33, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

the plainlinks thing

Hi Sean,
I saw that you deleted Template:PlainLinks. Should we add a CSS snippet to some help page instead (sometimes it's dangerous to have external links within a wiki look like internal ones)? So, what do you think: Is it better to omit this information here? Or should we provide a proper template that makes HTTP-links to this wiki look wiki-internal? I think, there will be only few applications, so direct "CSS hacking" will do...
I wish you all the best for 2014 --Wolf | talk 12:56, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

MediaWiki:Spamprotectiontext

I suggest changing MediaWiki:Spamprotectiontext to tell users about their option to request that pages be whitelisted. A sample message is at mw:Extension:SpamBlacklist#Whitelist. Thanks, Leucosticte (talk) 00:19, 25 January 2014 (UTC)

Consider it done! Thanks for the heads-up :) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 22:44, 25 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the comment

That really made my day. Unfortunately, there are some who think that merely tolerating someone's presence and allowing facts to be documented means that the person has dominated the wiki. I tend to agree more with AD's sentiments, except that I would go even further than he did, and say that not only should people not be banned for posting essays (in namespaces, such as an Essay: namespace of a wiki allegedly devoted to rational argumentation, where such essays are considered on-topic), but that under those kinds of circumstances, the essays shouldn't be deleted. This is a wiki devoted to wikis, wiki people, and wiki ideas, so comprehensively accomplishing that mission requires that controversial wikis, wiki people, and wiki ideas be documented as well in mainspace articles. Avoiding bias requires that everyone at least be able to tell their side of the story without being blocked, as long as they avoid being disruptive or uncivil. Cheers, Leucosticte (talk) 21:17, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

You are most welcome. I genuinely appreciate your work here on WikiIndex — you have some great constructive ideas, and the technical knowledge on how to push forward those ideas, making (hopefully) WikiIndex a better place!
You are also spot-on regarding civility — we absolutely should ALL be free to discuss others motives, ethics and points of view without fear of being moderated; the only provisos are that we all remain civil, and don't disrupt this (or any other) wiki to force ones own point.
I find you incredibly tolerant, in the light of some of the abuse which gets hurled in your direction — you always remain level-headed and very mature, and that is a truly great personal attribute to have, and I doff my cap to you for that. Life would be very dull if we didn't push boundaries! Best :)) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 21:51, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Scott Schaefer

Perhaps Scott Schaefer meant well. He had some possibly productive businesses by which he sought to support himself and the woman he calls "the swetest, hotest, sexiest, most beautiful wife in Dallas...in the world". Had he been unemployed, he wouldn't have mentioned a commercial business (and therefore wouldn't have seemed as spammy). Had he chosen to be an employee rather than an entrepreneur, he'd be less likely to be accused of spamming, because he would have gained little or nothing by promoting his company. But unemployed people, and non-entrepreneurs, and people who hold back information about their businesses, are not necessarily superior to others.

True, his LexingtonWiki didn't live up to the hyperbole (or hasn't lived up to it yet), but few ambitious projects do; certainly they often take a lot more work than expected, and there are plenty of distractions. Maybe his wife distracted him with all those skimpy outfits she wears in the hot Dallas climate; who knows. I used to think that, because of how emotionally, financially, and otherwise distracting it can be to be in a relationship, I should stay single until I finished developing Inclupedia, but loneliness can be as distracting as having a woman around, so I think I've broken even, perhaps.

Often planned projects are abandoned when one supersedes them with an even better or more important idea. Maybe that's what happened here. Or the person simply gives in to procrastination, because there's no one around to give him the push (and/or assistance) he needs to move forward.

Anyway, he probably is somewhat of a spammer but maybe he wasn't all that harmful; he was significantly less persistent and annoying than the spambots we deal with regularly, because he put work into developing the pages manually. Plus he blessed our wiki with pics of his (somewhat) hot wife; beauty makes the world a better place. I think he has done enough, simply by creating a non-Wikia wiki that shows evidence of at one time being an incubator of ambitious wiki ideas, to be regarded as a wiki person. At any rate, User talk:ScottSchaefer should probably be restored on the general principle that talk pages should remain for the sake of transparency.

Of course, I am somewhat biased because I have some things in common with this user, such as a penchant for ambitious wiki projects (which haven't yet come to full fruition) and delighting in showing off my wife's body to the world and publicly complimenting her beauty. Recent deletions

Please check Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets & Special:Gadgets --YiFei | talk 12:51, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

I see . . . did you want to undo my deletions which affect those? I presumed it was ok to delete those MW interface pages for those gadgets we don't have installed!
BTW, do you know if it is possible for the AJAX Recent Changes auto refresh to be only enabled to logged in users? Best regards, Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 20:29, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
You can do the undeletions :) The limitation of AJAX Recent Changes can be done by [1], which limit the gadget to only the ones with "purge" user right (only the "user" group has the right currently)
BTW, I've whitelisted the url (see User talk:Leucosticte), but trying to debug in hundreds of regexes is not easy. --YiFei | talk 09:29, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

New Users

Hi, I tried to become a new user of this wiki. I applied some days ago, no response. There is a TOS to check that one has read it, but this page does not exist! How long does it take to get ones account activated?

I tried for "Manorainjan" as name. You can answer me via http://manorainjan.myblog.de/manorainjan/gb or on my German Wikipedia page https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benutzer:Manorainjan --88.70.38.9 19:00, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

Still I can not log in http://wikiindex.org/User:Manorainjan password does not work and I do not get the Mail that is for resetting the password.--92.76.120.189 23:29, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi there. I'm so sorry you are having difficulty in creating an account, please accept my apologies. I actually thought one of the other sysops fixed your account here whilst I was away — they were obviously unable to do so. I will try to re-create your account, and will create the password the same as your username with the current year at the end (without spaces), and see if that works. If it does work, and you get to log-in, can you then please change your password to something more appropriate. I've temporarilly renamed your original account to User:Manorainjan-OLD.
Let's hope we can get this all sorted for you - best regards. :)))) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 15:03, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
Thank You. As You can see, it worked. And I understood that it is of no use to try to get my email confirmed. So I changed my password now and took full possession of the new account.;-)--Manorainjan (talk) 12:27, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

MultimeterWiki?

I was coming across WikiIndex in search for a wiki on multimeter. Seems no such wiki is listed. - Manorainjan

This wiki seems to be not on the index http://thinkwiki.de/Hauptseite.

This page seems to be outdated: Ebookpedia, the link to the homepage gets forwarded to another non-wiki blog-like page of similar topic.

Regarding your issues on ThinkWiki and Ebookpedia, please feel free to add or amend as you see fit - we still allow IP editors to create new and/or amend existing entries, but I appreciate it can be a pain in the rear to go through Captcha! For your question regarding a wiki on multimeters, can I suggest you look at the wikis listed in Category:Electronic and/or any of its related categories. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 11:47, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
OK, in the Category:Electronic I did not find anything of mentionable size or activity and marked several Wikis as Dormant. Later on I will earn how to add a Wiki. --Manorainjan (talk) 13:21, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Ray King

Whilst I may be a 'crat on this wiki, I don't have access to any of the 'backend' server-side software, and nor do any of our regular sysops and crats. WikiIndex is owned by Ray King, and he pays someone else to look after that aspect. Unfortunately, we have had a number of issues with our system config which have been 'broken' for a long time, and sadly don't seem to get fixed – one of those being our e-mail system – I personally have never been able to get my own WikiIndex e-mail working since I started here! :( Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 15:03, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

I noticed, that the talk-page of Ray King was visited by him last around 2006. that someone would take over and answer there, I could not see. Is that man still alive? His site "RecentChanges.info" is dead and empty since 2006 --Manorainjan (talk) 11:32, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
Haaa - you have found one of the many 'oddities' of this wiki!!!! Ray King is his real name, but he also edits under the username of 'User:Rathbone' (I have no idea why) – and he is still very much alive!
The person who runs this wiki on a day-2-day basis is MarkDilley, and Mark has closer 'off-wiki' contact with Ray. Mark does not have access to the server, but I think because he isn't a programmer, he'd rather leave the more complex backend stuff to more competent persons.
Anyway, glad we finally got you onboard, and look forward to your welcome contributions here on WikiIndex - Welcome again :)))) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 11:47, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

A strange bug when logged out

I didn't know the best place to post this, but when I'm logged out extra coding appears on some pages of the site messing up the page's formatting. This extra coding disappears when I sign in though (it does reappear when I sign out). The "Alvin and the Chipmunks Wiki" page is one of the pages that does this. A couple functions are viable before and in the area of the "Wiki Size" box. --DEmersonJMFM (talk) 21:57, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi, you need to clear your page cache when logged out (Ctrl + F5 on a Windows OS). We had a server overload issue about a week ago, so Semantic MediaWiki was temporarilly disabled as it was thought that was the cause. Hope this helps :)) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 05:18, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
I logged out and cleared my cache and the bug still appears... hmmm. ~~ MarkDilley
I dunno then . . . . Try rebooting, it worked for me :/ Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 13:41, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Clearing the cache nor restarting solves the problem for me. --DEmersonJMFM (talk) 21:42, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

If this is still problematic, maybe some screenshots might help, as I havn't seen any oddities when I log-out. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 21:26, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Template:User info

I would expect, that using this template would throw anyone in a specific category where You would find all who used it.--Manorainjan (talk) 18:57, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Also there appears a comma without a visible reason. --Manorainjan (talk) 18:58, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

I've altered it to autoinclude Category:Wiki People for those who use it, and to also display the template in the same Wiki People category. Re the comma - that occured because you included your company without your job title. I've fixed that too, I hope! Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 11:55, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
You did fix it :-) i testet it on User:Sweetie Belle Manorainjan (talk) 16:03, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

Do you not have Accessability rights in the US? In the UK we have to have a minimum font size to comply with visually impaired folks. And I eat loads of carrots :P Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 13:59, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

Form:Wiki

The existing cat Category:UnknownEditMode is not available in the form. Manorainjan (talk) 17:48, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

That is because the 'edit mode' is a Semantic Property, and only valid Semantic Properties can be added when creating articles using a Semantic Form that is Form:Wiki. I suggest when edit mode (or indeed any of the other Semantic Properties) are of 'unknown' - the best way to create a new article is by using an existing red link and copy+paste the Template:Wiki boilerplate - using the help text contained within the boilerplate. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 19:40, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

There is also no field for the time of creation of the Wiki. Manorainjan (talk) 18:00, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

Ahhh . . . we had a conflict a while back on that issue, which ought to be sorted. Again, use the boilerplate to get the basic info. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 19:40, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

Delete an entry?

Can I delete an entry in case of absolute uselessness? AnUnnamedMoinMoinWiki_(easypos.co.kr)? Manorainjan (talk) 18:45, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

No! We have a long-standing policy here on WikiIndex of not deleting dead wikis. And whilst this particular wiki may seem 'useless', the article title was chosen because they knew it was a wiki which was using the MoinMoin software, but no-one new how to translate korean (and it is now too late to translate, because Archive.org reports the site was overwhealmed by robots)! Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 19:59, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
OK, but why including a picture that says: "This wiki is inactive" while we are emtying this cat? Would, if at all the pic not have to say "dead" or "no logo"? I would prefer "nologo" if at all. "inactive" prompt people to change the status in something we do not want. Manorainjan (talk) 20:23, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Because I am utterly useless at creating logos! We really do need a new generic logo for dead wikis . . . how are your logo creation skills? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 11:08, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
The categories at the foot of the page will show weather the article has been updated, and I've just removed Inactive from the Semantic Property, so any article which uses Template:Wiki with Inactive as a status will now show up as a caution. This wont work if the article uses Template:Inactive (it was never created to support Semantic Properties). Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 11:08, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Changing a template to inactive removes all the categories from that wiki - so they don't show up in active category lists. ~~ MarkDilley

Category:Private

I think here is a change needed. A wiki could be dormant and private at the same time like Bible Wiki (biblewiki.net) Private belongs to another aspect similar to editmode. One has to create the aspect "accessibility" or anything else. {public|private|onInvitation|adult|legitimation|etc.} which defines the scope of onlookers not of editors. Naturally the scope of editmode is narrower than "accessibility" the mode nnames would have quite a cut set. Manorainjan (talk) 21:01, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

I've raised the issue here: WikiIndex talk:Community portal#Category:Private. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 13:28, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

Wikia question

Do you know how to destroy a Wikia site? Sweetie Belle (talk) 01:10, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

Erm . . . well . . . apart from dropping a nuclear bomb or two on their server sites, I don't think that is possible! In all honesty, the best way is to download the full database backup of the relevant wiki, fork it by re-hosting it elsewhere, and then get all editors to abandon the Wikia wiki. I few sly edits of vandalism might help taint the accuracy of the Wikia wiki . . . but I didn't tell you that <wink, wink>! Out of interest, which Wikia are you wanting to obliterate? Message me on Uncyc if you don't want to post it here, or if you want, I can SMS you (so you get my mobile number - I never post that in public spaces). Yours, intrigued! This is the Wikia I want to obliterate: http://spongefan.wikia.com Sweetie Belle (talk) 16:05, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
In order to make WikiIndex a more welcoming community of folks, I don't feel comfortable talking about destroying other wiki. I understand the community at some wiki to be very frustrating, at minimum, but would rather WikiIndex try to rise above that. What are you'alls thoughts? ~~ MarkDilley
A Wikia filled with sockpuppetry and pedophiles can be quite maddening, as I'm sure you can understand. Sweetie Belle (talk) 17:28, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
Mark, we here at WikiIndex arn't destroying wiki, not even a Wikia wiki! The only folks who destroy Wikia wikis are Wikia themselves. And WikiIndex is not the arbiter of the whole wiki world. I don't think my 'tongue-in-cheek' jest to Sweetie Belle about nuking Spongebob Fanon was to be taken as anything other than a joke! Template:Wiki

|wide logo = <!--insert 'y' when the logo is too wide AND/OR the title is too long-->

This line in itself causes the condition "wide logo" regardless of any y/n setting. Manorainjan (talk) 21:03, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Really, not come across that! Can you provide an example? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 10:50, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
I shall use the random page to select the Wiki ... 3D Dot Game Heroes Wiki ... Uploaded the Logo ... inserted the lines for Logo and wide .... marked n ... voilà! deleted the line .... Logo position is normal again. Manorainjan (talk) 21:07, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
Now Your turn! Show me ANY Wiki-Page where You got the '|wide logo =' set in a way that the logo is not placed as wide. Manorainjan (talk) 21:10, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
Clear your page cache. 3D Dot Game Heroes Wiki looks perfectly ok to me. You have discovered another anomoly in Template:Wiki – the wide logo switch will recognise ANY character (not just 'y') to force a 'wide logo' layout. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 21:34, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
Sure it looks OK right now, because I removed that line. See the DIFF in the versions! http://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=3D_Dot_Game_Heroes_Wiki&diff=prev&oldid=180955 and following. Manorainjan (talk) 21:44, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
I really can't see what the problem is. It is rendering exactly as designed by the template! <confused.com>  :-//// Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 22:08, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
Whatever. It does. I checked with another browser:Firefox which I never before used for WikiIndex. So no cache or anything-thing. Show me ANY Wiki-page where the wide-logo-line is used and the logo is not set in wide layout! This was next step, not misunderstanding what I tried to show. Manorainjan (talk) 22:14, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
If I can not replicate the problem, how can I then prove to you the info you are asking? Maybe you ought to ask in a more appropriate place?! Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 22:21, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

You are saying the template works. So what is so difficult to show my ANY case of success. Any wiki-page whatsoever where it works, just ANY of Your choice instead of asking me another question.?

It's late, I'm tired, and I have a headache. I'll look at this again in fresh light tomorrow, OK?  :) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 22:33, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Good morning ;-) Manorainjan (talk) 14:21, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

Look again at 3D Dot Game Heroes. I've reinstated |wide logo = <!--insert 'y' when the logo is too wide AND/OR the title is too long--> and the article is NOT displaying the wide logo format. Please note, there is NO 'active' text in the wide logo field line – the commented-out text is the same as if no text was there at all. As I previously mentioned, in the diff you quote above, you used the letter n – this will still force a wide logo display, as will ANY text. You could type in 'Mo Farah for gold' in the wide logo field, and it will still force the wide logo display. You seem to be making a mountain out of a molehill! Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 15:29, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
OK, the mole is back ;-) Now I see, ANY text makes it wide. So, for the moment it is easiest to leave the commented-out explanation in. Besides that, can You fix this parameter-problem so that we don't get mountains of wide logos? Manorainjan (talk) 17:08, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
Correct!!!! Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 17:55, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

That wasn't a test edit. But I just noticed that it was at the wrong place and I was about to change that. You where faster ;-) So, until fixed, where do You want to have that note? Manorainjan (talk) 17:30, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

You seem to be the only person who has had difficulty with this! The 'commented out' help text seems clear enough to me, but agreed it could do with some tweaking. Instead of adding further complicated help text, I'll look into changing the template, so that ONLY 'y' will render wide logo mode – but that requires complex syntax, which I'm not 100% familiar with, so either I'll need to read-up on the subject, or find someone else to edit the template! I will add a better help note on Form:Wiki – for those who use that. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 17:55, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
UPDATE – the template has now been updated – a big thanks to YiFei :)) Please feed back if this fixes the problem . . . or not :// Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 09:45, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

engine

The form 2 add a Wiki should have a default value for <engine (wiki software)> Manorainjan (talk) 21:23, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

Not really, that field has a drop-down list. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 21:27, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
Does it? And if it would, would it be impossible to set a default? Manorainjan (talk) 21:37, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
Whoops, my bad, sorry! The wiki engine field in the form includes an 'auto-fill' option – you just need to type the first three or four letters, and the list of wiki engines (which are spelt with those letters you just typed) will appear. The more letters you type, the viewed options will reduce. This works the same (or very similar) to our 'Search' box. We don't really want to set a default, as this will be counter-productive to Semantic Data. Apologies again for the confusion O:-) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 09:54, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
One can fill any value one imagines. That in itself is good, because one may encounter engines unknown before. But I think it is the most common case that one has no idea what the engine is (besides Wikia and unaltered MediaWiki). So empty we do not want to have it. Also we do not want to have a collection of {'no idea', 'unknown', 'UnknownEngine'; 'YourWikiEngine', ...} Therefore I think it is better to set a default like 'YourWikiEngine'. To suggest this is the the least.Manorainjan (talk) 00:43, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
To be frank, I think our listing of wiki engines is arguably the most comprehensive (I mean in terms of listing, maybe not in terms of detail of each engine), so I think it unlikely we have missed out any. That isn't to say we have a crystal ball!! – of course new engines crop up now and then, but we are generally quite swift in adding them here. WikiMatrix is another good resource for wiki engine listing – it has considerably more in-depth detail on some engines, but it has many not listed.Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 20:15, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

I was not complaining about a lack of items in that list, not at all. This is in no way my point. Rather I wanted to prevent useless entries in this list. Manorainjan (talk) 01:04, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

I don't agree that we can just fill in anything we want. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 20:15, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

Oh yes, we can! I tried it out. I filled just any nonsense term in and it was placed where all the 'auto-fill' terms would have come to. If You can restrict this field so that no new entries can be generated by just anybody, it would be good as well. Manorainjan (talk) 01:04, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Finally, I struggle to agree that wiki folks have no idea what engine they are using. Excluding the many who edit WMF or Wikia wikis, most regulars on independent wikis would know which engine they were using. But even if you are correct, and they enter the wrong engine – this is a wiki – we can easily correct it! In summary, only valid engines can be used from the form – we don't create false semantic information such as 'UnknownEngine', 'YourWikiEngine', etc. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 20:15, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

But I could, so try it out Yourself! Possibly those silly entries do not end up in this list, but they sit on the Wiki pages at that place and cause red text and Special:WantedCategories which brings me to my next question ;-) Manorainjan (talk) 01:04, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

WikiIndex:Add_a_Wiki

Because of User_talk:Manorainjan#THE_templatea concersation a conversation with EarthFurst I found out, that the function/template does not create or suppresses to leave behind many of the lines in the template which are unused on time of creation. That makes it quite work intensive to add structured data later on. It requires also special knowledge that can not be expected from first time users. there is no incentive to do it. See Manorainjan/y for example

 • In my opinion this template function should write out all lines of the_one&only Wiki page template, used/filled or not, so that everybody who edits it later has it much easier.
 • And a BOT should run over all wiki pages and fill up the missing lines including comments.

Manorainjan (talk) 18:43, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Special:WantedCategories

Wiki engine is a semantic property, and whilst we havn't yet created more in-depth semantic properties for wiki engines, that area is one which I'm keen to expand. We need to observe real caution regarding semantic data, the semantic statistics shows we have 29 properties, but we only use 13. If you look at our full list of properties, it states we have 44 properties, again, we only use 13 – look at all those red links! The others were created due to some well intended but misguided edits to a template. This is why I'm super cautious regarding editing certain templates, and why we can't just add any value such as a wiki engine. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 20:15, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

What is this entry No.1 in this special list?
 1. YourSoftwareLicense‏‎ (41 members)

How can that happen? I tried to search for 'YourSoftwareLicense' to see where it was used/asked for. But somehow I did not get the site to show me any entry at all. What to do if one wants to find the 'requesting' pages for the 'WantedCategories'? Manorainjan (talk) 01:08, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

deserted pics

Besides that I stopped WikiLogoing deserted files because there is a major question to be solved first. Manorainjan (talk) 21:27, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Finally, what is the major question which needs answering regarding deserted image files? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 21:17, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
this is asked here: http://wikiindex.org/Category_talk:Active_administrators_of_this_wiki#Funny_place_to_be_for_an_image

Wait a minute or two, until I added clarification on that page ;-) Manorainjan (talk) 21:27, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Is there a regular way to find the URL of the logo of a MediaWiki? Last time this did work:

http://wiki.affenfelsen.de/images/

https://wikiindex.org/images/

but in our case the dir listing is blocked. Since the logo could have ANY name, I think the next best is to look for a path. Manorainjan (talk) 15:01, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

Have you tried the search function? It is discussed elsewhere on this wiki. Oh, please don't delete comments on my or any other talk page. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 15:14, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

I saw only this: WikiIndex:Adding Pictures but this explains where to put the pic, not from where to get it. I was asking specifically regarding MediaWiki. I thought You know something about its structure.Manorainjan (talk) 23:06, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

I don't claim to know anything about the structure of MW (I trust you arn't getting confused with StructuredData which is part of the Semantic MediaWiki plug-in)?! There is (IIRC) an example of one path on Category talk:MediaWiki, and there are also examples on one of the Wikipedia template talk page here. Crucially, all WMF wikis use their own unique version of MediaWiki, and 'customer users' (such as WikiIndex) are configured slightly differently.

What web browser are you using? I ask, because the best way go get logo URL is from a browser which allows inspecting elements of web pages. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 02:16, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

I assume this http://wikiindex.org/skins/common/images/wiki.png would help me if I understood it.Manorainjan (talk) 23:40, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

That is just the default placeholder logo as supplied with the downloaded MW software. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 02:16, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

I think it is more than that. Because it says '$wgLogo' which looks like a kind of system variable. that could be a lead to a generally functioning phrase like Server/$wgLogo-path.png or so.Manorainjan (talk) 15:16, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

$wgLogo is a PHP variable for MediaWiki site logo configuration which people usually don't have access to. --YiFei | talk 16:41, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Wiki Aventurica

http://www.wiki-aventurica.de/wiki/Benutzer_Diskussion:StipenTreublatt#Euer_Wiki_ist_nun_bei_WikiIndex.org_eingetragen._:-.29 new: Wiki Aventurica, old: WikiAventurica. PS: Why didn't the 'old' show when it was ]old: (no space)?Manorainjan (talk) 22:23, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Two reasons why it didn't show. The obvious reason is down to CamelCase, which makes conventional searching more difficult. The second reason may depend on how you searched! If you just type letters in the Search box, and watch for the available options to appear – then this method will ONLY display results with article names begining with those typed letters. So if you typed Adven – it will not show those two above examples you linked to. In these instances, the best way is to carry out a full text search – by clicking on the 'Search' button rather than the 'Go' button. You could then use the advanced search if necessary. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 10:10, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
Re your question on what to do about the duplicates. If those articles link to two separate wikis, then our articles need re-naming in accordance with our WikiIndex:Naming conventions policy. In reality, the best way to re-name them is either by domain or wiki engine or wiki host. Then create disambiguation pages from any redirects. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 10:10, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
both articles point to the same Wiki.Manorainjan (talk) 13:22, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
I read your comments on the German language wiki, and the gist was that they wanted the edit history preserved, but wanted a non-CamelCase name – if I understood correctly!
Therefore, being as you created from scratch the Wiki Aventurica article (but the other has an edit history), copy all your text from Wiki Aventurica (best way is to click on 'edit', then select all and copy - this will then include all template formatting) — and then paste it into the 'wrong' WikiAventurica article (click on edit, select all text in the edit box, and paste). Once you've done that, I'll rename the 'wrong' WikiAventurica article (complete with your fresh edit) to the non-CamelCase version. Let me know when you've done this. :)) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 23:01, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Which wiki did you find first, Uncyc or WikiIndex?

Hi Hoof, I'm just wondering, which wiki did you find first, Uncyc or WI? Sweetie Belle (talk) 14:53, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

I found WikiIndex first. But I then discovered Uncyc very shortly after – however, I refuse to create an account on any Wikia wiki, so it was only after Uncyc forked to an independent that I signed up on Uncyc. I find I need to be in a specific mood or frame of mind before I can get my satirical juices flowing for editing on Uncyc. :0) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 20:33, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

Wikia

What do you hate most about Wikia? For me it's the ugly skin and blog/article features. Hbu? :p Sweetie Belle (talk) 14:36, 31 August 2014 (UTC)

How long have you got?? Probably the worst is the fact that folks freely give their time, many creating quite professional-looking wikis, and then Wikia shaft said users by clogging their sites with adverts, and make millions of $$$$$$ from their creations. I also hate the malicious code that is hidden in the Wikia software – if I visit more than about 10 Wikias, my laptop either grinds to a halt, or trounces me with a blue screen of death! :-/ Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 21:35, 31 August 2014 (UTC)

Another thing

Do you know how to set up MediaWiki? My partner (Teleram) and I have been looking to find a more permanent/more suitable home for a wiki we founded together but neither of us know how to set up MediaWiki or the extensions we want (I'll list them later).

Naturally, we're planning to somehow make money off of our wiki (probably the same way [[Wikimedia]\ does, through donations), so money is no object if you need a bribe. :p

Anyways, what say you? Sweetie Belle (talk) 16:43, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi, you can offer me all the bribes in the world, I'll still be no use to you! :p I have zero knowledge of how to set up a MediaWiki install from scratch. :-( If you want a hosted home, I was going to suggest ShoutWiki, but you are already there. I thought ShoutWiki were one of the best wiki hosts! What don't you like about them - you can SMS me if you prefer (I sent you my number by SMS about 12hrs ago - hope you didn't think it was spam). Or are you looking to host it yourselves so you can make money without breaching a hosts Ts&Cs?
If you are going it on your own, you should obviously make an account on MediaWiki.org, but also make one on MediaWiki Beginners Wiki – the latter being created by user:Arcane, who appears to know how to set up and run a wiki; and this page is an example of his straightforward instructions on getting a MW wiki up and running. Other good folks to pester ask nicely are TeraS (who created the awesome SuccuWiki), and YiFei (who is awesome with anti-spam tools, and also knows a lot about MW).
Hope this gives you a few leads - I'd be interested in following your creation - I too would like to know how to create my own wiki site. Best wishes, :)) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 08:52, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

I bet you are glad I made you wait!!! BTW, you could create a redirect for rarityfan. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 14:51, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

One more thing ;-)

I suggest to add for Category:Semantic MediaWiki a line |SemanticWiki as part of structured data to Template:Wiki Farm with the properties

 • Semantic MediaWiki = it is
 • SemanticUnable = No such ability
 • SemanticUnknown = Who knows what?
 • SemanticAltSolution = Other solution than SemanticMediaWiki
 • SemanticOptionable = One can upgrade to Semantic (Media)Wiki.

I think, this requires something like Category:Semantik Wiki to become the Category which contains Category:Semantic MediaWiki Manorainjan (talk) 19:41, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

Archived farms

ViaWiki — the Farms template could use some status line where one can set the status also as archived. I saw that Wikifarms no less than Wikis deteriorate and therefore status should be given. Manorainjan (talk) 00:15, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

Why did You change/add status to Dead and not Achived? Manorainjan (talk)

How can you 'archive' a wiki farm? Sure we can find links at Archive.org for the 'front page' of the former wiki host, but it is impossible to 'archive' all the individual wikis hosted on said wiki farm, and include those in the template:Wiki Farm!
The 'archived' option should only be used in individual articles using template:Wiki – be they hosted on a farm or independently. I do agree that the status of the farm should be included, which is why I added to the template – but the only valid options for a wiki farm will either be 'active' or 'dead'. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 09:35, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

In case of a singular Wiki the archive would often only have top pages archived.

Nope, we ONLY categorise dead wikis as 'archived' when more than the main page is archived. That means that at least some of the content pages are also archived.

Archived does not practically connote, that the whole content is available.

I think that is long accepted.

Just like 'Active' does not mean that everything in THIS Wiki is perfect.

Please include a URL of where we state WikiIndex is "perfect". I personally have no recollection of WikiIndex making any such claims. :-/

When I as a visitor see the Archived tag, than I know I would find 'something' by clicking on the name-link.

Agreed – just like every other URL on the internet, when you click on it - you hope something relevant will open up in your browser. But sometimes, that doesn't always happen – Rick-Rolling on YouTube is a classic example! WikiIndex is no different.

When it is tagged Dead I would not want to try to end up waiting for the 404 or the domain squatters page.

That is your choice. In a dead wiki article (with say just the front page archived), you can 'hover' your mouse pointer over all of the links in the infobox – and should notice from the tiny url pop-up which are the original (and therefore dead or cyber-squatted) urls, and those which have changed to archived urls.

I do not see any harm in including Archived in the legit attributes of this status. Manorainjan (talk)

I disagree, quite strongly. It is just not logical that you can archive the features and functions of a wiki host. If the said wiki farm has a number of its former hosted wikis also archived (say more than 10%), then we can state that in the prose text of the farm article. CoreyShields

Why did You not comply with the request of Corey Shields? He told me personally via facebook message to delete that page.Manorainjan (talk) 11:31, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

His images have been on WikiIndex from the outset, more than 8.5 years, and added by MarkDilley, following their meeting at a WikiSym or similar. You've been on WikiIndex, what, 3 months and claim he messaged you on Facebook to remove his profile. Yet the more logical way would be for the person in question to either login and make the request, or e-mail MarkDilley directly. Can you see why I made my decision? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 13:04, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

Do You really think people are acting logically? How old are You? Not even Your 'decision' was logically. You could have contacted him Yourself, if You are in doubt. Here You go: Corey Shields. You could have asked me, if in doubt. But You chose a biased edit solemnly on Your own. That's not logic, that prejudice. See my proof here: CoreyShields fb.jpg.

You see, this Birdy is much longer here on WI and talks a lot about 'them' wanting to delet 'their' page. But he never ever was willing and able to deliver slightest proof for that claim. I, as short as I ever might be here can support my ever claim by proof. I am like that. It does not depend on my period of stay here.

My intention was to contact Corey and possibly reactivate him for cooperation or at least make him brush up his people page towards something useful. But I respect his straight request to delete it. I'm not to happy with that. But, as You know, "100 % of shots You don't take don't go in" Manorainjan (talk) 13:30, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

This contains a number of assumptions.

 1. that I used the MediaWiki.org logo
 2. that the use of this logo in the said way requires permission
 3. that the use in a low res proposal is relevant

I object all 3 assumptions. First of all, if You assume that I used a copyrighted work in a illegitimate way, You got to know and show the original work. Now, which file do You assume I used from the MediaWiki logos? And You should very carefully consider this wp:Presumption of innocence as a basic principle of how not only judges and office bearers but actually all people should to their judgement. If people would accuse You of anything, You would very much want this principle do be applied, wouldn't You? Manorainjan (talk) 10:17, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

To gag or not to gag

Sean, it seams that You try to evade the confrontation with facts unpleasant for You by trying to gag me best as You can. How could that ever work? You are not really protecting Your up to now good standing here by so obviously biased reverts, blocks and deletes. Blocking

I support YiFei's assertion that blocking in this instance is too harsh and request that you unblock. ~~ MarkDilley

I wonder if in this type of instance, it might be better, instead of blocking right away, to either take the matter off-wiki to a synchronous, private communication method like Gmail chat, which can often be quite helpful for resolving conflicts; or for either the sysop or the user who has been threatened with a block to file a Request for Comment and see what others think.
