FAQ

I don't know why your "FAQ" page redirects to mediawiki but I suspect some kind of built-in functionality. Let's use WikiIndex:FrequentlyAskedQuestions for the time being.

images

http://static.flickr.com/19/95199503_e4c24693f6.jpg TedErnst char 90 per cent.jpg TedErnst char 50 per cent.jpg TedErnst char 25 percent.jpg TedErnst char 10 per cent.jpg

Rather than uploading various sizes of the same image, just upload the largest size that will be needed. Fpr this example, assume the first image above is uploaded here as "TedErnst.jpg". The same results as what you've got would be obatined by typing the following:

Just specify the number of pixels wied you want an image to be scaled to. specify "thumb" to thumbnail it. other parameters include left, right, center, and frame. Any other text is put in as a caption. I'm going to upload a picture of myself and do all this on my page to show you what I mean. —User:Sean Fennel@ 12:31, 3 Mar 2006 (EST) EDIT: Apparently only thumbnailed images can have captions, but I think you can specify the size of thethumbnail.

recursiveness

it is not just on the Wiki Engine page, it is now on the Category_talk:All page

The recurisive problem is gone, did you do something with it, or did the database just flush it out? Soooo!! It looks great!!!! There is an issue with Lizzy still, I think in the Category:Enlish

As far as your comment: "UseModWiki isn't going to show up in the OpenEdit cat anymore, correct? Doesn't seem right." - not sure what you mean, I thought we solved that issue with a soft redirect? MarkDilley | talk

Reply from Andy

Hi Ted, I replied to your comment on DARwiki barnraising] Thanks. --Andy 10:04, 4 Mar 2006 (EST)

There's now a bit more information on the invitation which is going out to appropriate communities.

I Hope this helps to answer your concerns to some extent. 3 days to go --Andy 05:10, 7 Mar 2006 (EST)

Google News Alert!

I've got the EvoWiki as a Google News Alert. It's usually about one alert a month, except for one alert that had about a dozen blog entries in it. My latest Google alert for EvoWiki (just received) was for the WikiIndex article.

BTW: Could you take a look at User:BlankVerse/Sandbox and tell me what you think. User talk:BlankVerse 10:41, 17 Mar 2006 (EST)

Wikimedia Foundation

I am very confused. I recently created Wikimedia Foundation. And then, so there would be a category for all of the Wikimedia wikis, I created Category:Wikimedia. That category looked a little too much like Category:MediaWiki, so I then tried to create Category:Wikimedia Foundation. Although it looked like I had created the category, it would then magically disappear. What I am guessing is happening is that the software has been set up so that you can't have an article and a category with the same name. User:BlankVerse | talk 16:51, 25 Mar 2006 (EST)

Thank you. I have no idea why the category wasn't created, but I tried several times.
Another issue for the Wikimedia Foundation article is that I couldn't figure out a good category to put it into under Category:Browse. User:BlankVerse | talk 23:44, 26 Mar 2006 (EST)

monobook.js

I tried modifying mine and came to the conclusion that that feature (whatever its name is) must be turned off in the database. I'll just have to do without my rounded tabs. —User:Sean Fennel@ 11:17, 5 May 2006 (EDT)

Deletion

Hey Ted, I think we can wait for deletion of pages like that. See if they develope, maybe use the deletion tag? Best, MarkDilley

MediaWiki:Name

I didn't understand those changes you made (although I'm sure there a brilliant explanation) --Raymond King | talk 17:00, 13 May 2006 (EDT)

WikiSym 2006 in Odense

Hi Ted, and thank you for leaving me a notice. I only heard about WikiSym a few weeks ago and was dead excited to hear it taking place here in Odense - of all places! :-) I hope very much to meet you there. We are trying to get a press accreditation, and a permit to cover the event on video. I will of course post the news on our site - for the moment I have been preoccupied with the news of Mr. Lessig visiting Denmark on the 10th of June, which we hope to be able to cover too. --Morten Blaabjerg 14:08, 18 May 2006 (EDT)

Hey Ted, I met Morten Blaabjerg after stopping to ask him about his video equipment, only to be pleasantly surprised that he ran this wiki too! I will have to post his picture. MarkDilley

Wiki Engine v Wiki Farm

Hey Ted, Re: Editthis.info I thought about that too, but went with no because it is a wiki farm rather than a wiki engine. So there were no redundancy/recursive issues. What do you think? MarkDilley

If it does end up being a subpage, then we have an issue. I just couldn't figure out in my head if it would become a subpage or not, my guess is no, but let's keep an eye out for the opposite. MarkDilley

Real name in the main namespace

Welcome Chris! To go a bit further with Mark's statement, we're encourging everyone to have a page for their name in the main namespace. Yours would be Chris Watkins, of course. Your user page could be redirected there and the talk page from there could be redirected here so you'd still get notification of messages. Hope this makes sense. peace, TedErnst | talk 21:38, 3 September 2006 (EDT)

Thanks Ted... but to be honest, no it doesn't make sense to me. It doesn't bother me too greatly though - I'm cool with different communities having their own customs, so I'll look at it when I get time. --Chris Watkins (a.k.a. Singkong2005) talk 23:05, 3 September 2006 (EDT)

Okay, I see the reasoning - it wouldn't be my preferred approach, as it seems confusing, especially for newbies, whereas userspace is already dedicated to pages by and about users. Also takes more work setting up. I can live with it... but can I clarify whether it's a policy, a guideline, or a preference of a majority of active users...? Thanks --Chris Watkins (a.k.a. Singkong2005) talk 02:23, 4 September 2006 (EDT)
Okay, I see your point now, how active wiki people deserve an article page in this wiki... anyway, I've made the appropriate redirects, so people can find me if they look me up. Can't think too much more about it right now... Thanks --Chris Watkins (a.k.a. Singkong2005) talk 02:46, 4 September 2006 (EDT)
One option is to put my homepage (really a kind of portal) at Chris Watkins, or is that going overboard? I just don't want to replicate too much of the same material on both sites. --Chris Watkins (a.k.a. Singkong2005) talk 02:53, 4 September 2006 (EDT)
...or (thinking about keeping it as an article-type page, rather than a personal page) perhaps I should just put the list of the collaborations I'm involved with at Chris Watkins, plus a link to my homepage?

Category Discussion

I'm working on a template to drop at the end of every discussion on categories. The site seems like it needs to "gel" this discussion and this seems like a good way to do it. Probably the template will get deleted later, but "it's a process" :-)

WikiSize Categories

Hi Ted,

what do you think about refinement in sizes like 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 etc. ? It seems better to me to say that a wiki has more than 50 articles if it has 95 and rank it higher as wikis with about 11 articles. --Peu 16:38, 17 October 2006 (EDT)

I was going to put in sizes if there weren't any already. My initial thoughts was log powers of 10 (10, 100, 1000, 10000, etc as was done) and then I thought about it a bit more and figured it wouldn't have much resolution and maybe 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256... would be more elegant. In either case the bigger problem seems to me like it's a lack of buy in on the whole idea. People aren't searching in "size" really, they're mostly going to be searching by topic and then want "the biggest wiki" that's close to the topic they want. I'm not sure how to give them that info really...
Perhaps the wiki templace should have a "# of pages" tag? - JenniferForUnity 12:20, 18 October 2006 (EDT)
When size was first proposed, the active contributors knew that they didn't have enough energy to edit every single wiki in our system to add the size field to the wiki template. We recommended that the person wanting size as a category create a seperate template that would then be optional, and wikis without it wouldn't have a broken template on their page. That person did a few pages and then disappeared. Peu has now done way more work on size than anyone else has, and we're the kind of wiki where those doing the work get to make the decisions, so as long as you're not making tons of work for other people, you can do whatever you feel is best. I don't see adding another field to the wiki template as helping us. Just in the last few days smiddle added the size template to the new page boilerplate, so from now on newly added pages will have the size template. "What would you really like to do?" is really the question. TedErnst | talk 12:51, 18 October 2006 (EDT)
I think it is possible to add a new parameter "size" name to the wiki template without breaking existing inclusions. I don't exactly know how, but the parameter can be tested against a given pseudo-value or emptyness, and if so, include the using page into the category "unknown size". (I did something like this, but it's complicated and cannot remember right now) --Peu 15:42, 18 October 2006 (EDT)
Would you, please, have a look on this Template:Wiki/suggestion? --Peu 18:48, 18 October 2006 (EDT)

InterWiki

Hi Ted, how can I activate InterWiki links for my MediaWiki? I read the documentations more than once, but... --Peu 12:04, 18 October 2006 (EDT)

John Stanton is our back end person here at WikiIndex. Might want to run it by him. I have no idea. TedErnst | talk 12:47, 18 October 2006 (EDT)
I see, thanks. --Peu 13:05, 18 October 2006 (EDT)

moved to Template talk:Wiki/suggestion

I added a Wiki Kamelopedia that was so big, that I could not belive, that it was not listed in WikiIndex yet. I had a look on one or two logos in the all images list[1] and gave up. I think it would be very useful to check the wiki logos (not only the names) to decide if the wiki in question is already listed or not. (The ordering to ?... is similar to *..., = top level or meta) --Peu 13:49, 22 October 2006 (EDT)

Okay. Go for it! :-) TedErnst | talk 13:54, 22 October 2006 (EDT)
No, you are right! (Providing a link in a category index is possible without subcategorizing.) Could you please add a sentence (in english English) that includes a hint to Category:WikiLogo for the people who want to check the logos as to be safe to make no duplicates. Thank you forward --Peu 17:06, 22 October 2006 (EDT)
Thank you for integrating the link to wiki logo cats. --Peu 18:05, 23 October 2006 (EDT)

hard link

(concerning your edits [2] and [3])

I replaced the hard link yesterday as to have a Image-Page with categorization WikiLogo. I'd prefer a hard link integrated in each downloaded Image. The Wiki-Pages will be rendered consistently (often faster). Maybe there's only a technical refinement on the Wiki-template and we can have both: the link to the website (! we have it already: beside the logo) and a Image-Page with a helpful usage link. --Peu 03:19, 23 October 2006 (EDT)

Lots of hours of work went into converting all wiki images on this site to be hard links. Please do not change that policy without talking with others about it. Sean Fennel did most of the work, so let's make sure to get his opinion. Ray King and Mark Dilley also felt it was important for the image link to be intuitive, to take people to the wiki in question rather than to the image page. You make a strong case for a reversal in course, but it's going to take more than 3000 edits to make your idea into reality, so let's go slow in making the policy. TedErnst | talk 12:32, 23 October 2006 (EDT)

Hm, ok. How can we provide a "visual wiki index"...maybe with a template, I'd look for a solution...(?) (but what is the benefit of downloaded images...in the Template:Wiki is a logo included with an upload invitation)--Peu 12:51, 23 October 2006 (EDT)

I was not the one that worked on the images issue. Please bring it up with the others. TedErnst | talk 13:51, 23 October 2006 (EDT)

is it done?

I think testing is done. (I) would check it first in real WikiIndex life, but I think: yes. The Boilerplate has to be edited only for new parameters to be set, optional parameters can be left. If there was

param_name=

(means: param_name=nothing)

then the template does not function properly. --Peu | talk 18:12, 25 October 2006 (EDT)

Help!

I can see now template:Wiki/2, template:Wiki/3 ... and template:Wiki Boilerplate/2, template:Wiki Boilerplate/2 ... and the new (brand new, caution hot!) parameters autor (founder(s)) and interwiki... WikiIndex was smart when I entered it, now it seems to become diffuse. Please, Ted, where can we all discuss things like this? --Peu | talk 03:53, 30 October 2006 (EST)

inactive wikis

I began to check frequently (once a day) wikis, to that I could not connect once. I added a link to the talk page and categorized it as cannot connect[4]. So we can check them again in the future - what do you think about tis idea? --Peu | talk 14:44, 1 November 2006 (EST)

Your method seems like a lot of work to me. There's nothing wrong with doing what you're doing, of course, but I'm not sure what the benefit is. If a wiki is gone for good, then changing the template from Wiki to Inactive is the end of the story. If it's only down temporarily, then whichever person stumbles across it again when it's up can change it back to Wiki. Your way is also fine for documenting the history of a glitchy server over time, but we have hundreds of inactives, so doesn't necessarily seem like a good use of time. TedErnst | talk 14:50, 1 November 2006 (EST)

I think you mean "is not the end of the story"?, but I see, your way seems better, we can also walk through the inactive wikis... --Peu | talk 14:59, 1 November 2006 (EST)

No, I meant that it is the end of the story. Once something's listed as "inactive" we ignore it forever. If it comes back, sure, it can be changed here, but I personally find the inactives to be very low priority. I'd rather spend time filling in Unknowns for active wikis rather than worry about the inactives. TedErnst | talk 15:24, 1 November 2006 (EST)

Ok, that seems reasonable.

wikis to add and mark's wiki list

Another question: how do the wikis to add relate to Mark's wiki list, I see no strike-outs, is this relation managed anyway? --Peu | talk 15:58, 1 November 2006 (EST)

Mark was lazy one day when he found 100 wikis (or some number). Instead of using the "add" tag, he just put them in a list. That list hasn't been touched since then, as far as I know. The whole list should go away as those wikis have new pages created with the add tag. Some of them might've been added from other sources since that time. Re: Welcome

Hi there Ted. Many thanks for your kind welcome to 'WikiIndex'! All the best, carl. --Spud Gun 03:51, 12 March 2007 (PDT) (PD: It's 11:51 in Madrid :-)

Re: name

Hi there Ted.

I have taken the liberty of creating a 'personal' page in the main namespace, as you suggested (see: Carl McBride). If you could re-direct the Talk to User:Spud Gun then that would be fine. I created the account 'Spud Gun' out of habit (it is the name of the accounts that I use to edit the both the English and the Spanish Wikipedia) rather than for any overwhelming need to hide my identity!

All the best, carl. --Spud Gun 03:26, 13 March 2007 (PDT)

Many thanks Ted. All the best, carl. --Spud Gun 08:31, 13 March 2007 (PDT)

Page count

What qualifies a page as "legitimate" for the purpose of wiki pagecounts? For example, when I modified the pagecount category of Rosetta Code, I didn't include obvious redirects, or even pages not directly related to the wiki's theme. I even failed to include pages in the Category: namespace, where much of my content is. --Short Circuit 15:15, 14 March 2007 (PDT)

Wikivorce - do not delete please

Ted, I am the webmaster for wikivorce. You said you thought it was a joomla CMS , not a wiki. In fact it is at its core a wiki, we use Joomla for CMS and home page, but the core content is held using Mambowiki - a Mediawiki component for joomla. If you select divorce guide from our main menu on home page you are taken straight to the wiki.

Thanks, Ian Rispin
