The Netgear Stora, the Seagate GoFlex Home, the LaCie Ethernet Disk mini – Home Edition, the Verbatim MediaShare, are low-cost home NAS (network attached storage devices) with very similar electronic hardware. The hardware runs (open source) Red Hat Linux (embeddedLinux).
With some time, and this wiki, you can fix some of these limitations and bugs, and make it do a lot of things that it can't do 'out of the box'. (Some people claim this is 'hardware hacking'.)
Originally called Hardware Hackers Unite (HHU),[1] the subsequently renamed OpenStora wiki discusses all this hardware, and how to reprogram it to do more things.
Dead since early-2018.
