ScribbleWiki was a wiki farm that announced permanent closure of the service due to a server crash and claimed failure of their (unnamed) backup service, to provide them with a backup. (29th Sept 08) (The blog has since deleted all the comments made during the crisis, but some recollections may be found here.)

People who want their own wiki should bear in mind that such disasters can happen. MediaWiki (software used by ScribbleWiki and Wikipedia) allows you to backup a list of articles, categories, etc. Near the bottom of the left column of any MediaWiki page, you should find "Special pages", from there go to "Export pages". An administrator can upload these backups to another wikifarm, using "Import pages". Both the wiki code and the html site, can be (more easily) backed up with HTTrack Website Copier but to upload these to another MediaWiki wiki, the articles would have to be pasted one at a time.

ElWiki was another wiki farm that no longer seems to be available. Many free-of-cost MediaWiki wiki farms are still in service, including: Referata, Wiki-Site, Wikia, and Editthis.info.
