How to deal with others
Telling someone "don't be a jerk" is generally wrong — especially if it's true. It upsets the other person and reduces the chance that they'll listen to what you say.
Focus on behaviour, not on individuals. Say what you want and why you want it. Say why you think the other person's behaviour is counterproductive. Assume good faith to the maximum extent possible. If you don't understand why someone is doing something, ask. Don't rush to complain until you are sure that good faith negotiations can't work. Understand before insisting on being understood.
Remember that your perception can be wrong. If the other person is writing in an unfamiliar language, or has a different cultural background, you may misunderstand their intentions.
Above all, be genuine. Don't ask questions when you know the answer. Don't say you want one thing if you want another. Don't try to persuade people of things that aren't true. Do not respond to jerkitude in kind, no matter how tempting it may be.
Exerpt from: here. You do not follow Your own rules. --Manorainjan 09:12, 25 January 2017 (PST)
- I'm certainly not coy. And You should not call me a jerk either. It would be going against wp:Wikipedia:No personal attacks wouldn't it? --Manorainjan 09:19, 25 January 2017 (PST)
- PA? Since you love wiki-lawyering: I didn't call you a jerk. I refuse to believe that you don't know better. You are absolutely playing dumb about how your behavior of harassing and deliberately provoking others is both real and detrimental to this site. I'm telling you to stop now and if I see more instances of you harassing other users, I'll block you. It's not hard to ask you to be a decent person and this is a conversation that we've been having for years. Koavf (talk) 09:25, 25 January 2017 (PST)
I do not love what You have linked to, not even knew it. Your link does not lead to any specific page/artikle. Correct Your link, if anything is to be said by this! --Manorainjan 09:33, 25 January 2017 (PST)
- Exhibit A The page is a redirect (and you obviously know what that is) leading to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikilawyering. Stop being so abrasive. Koavf (talk) 11:03, 25 January 2017 (PST)
- Now, after reading it, I ask You, why You are pointing this to me?
- "A common mistake of misguided advocacy is when a person appoints himself a mediator and proceeds with judging the sides by telling them whether they are right or wrong instead of helping the sides to better state their positions and to find common grounds. It is not uncommon that one side is indeed wrong, and in such a case a mediator begins to appear to take sides thus alienating the wrong side and triggering their defense instincts, further entrenching them against an amicable resolution."
- This is exactly what You are used to do. Now I got a link for You to read it carefully: wp:Psychological projection Manorainjan 11:16, 25 January 2017 (PST)
- Direction I am directing this to you because your behavior is the common denominator of the problems and that's also obviously by design. I'm not sure how this quotation is supposed to be relevant as I'm not self-appointed: I was given the position of an admin because others think I can be of value here. Others are questioning your value to the community due to your disposition. You can act childish about this and pretend like you are unimpeachable but the reality is that you make it a point to be obnoxious and abrasive to others, driving them away from the site. Koavf (talk) 11:20, 25 January 2017 (PST)
- Now, after reading it, I ask You, why You are pointing this to me?
Do You understand the nature of projection, even remotely? Manorainjan 11:24, 25 January 2017 (PST)
- Projection Yes. Do you understand what I'm telling you about your behavior and how it is inappropriate? Koavf (talk) 11:34, 25 January 2017 (PST)
- You are not asking for understanding. You are asking for obedience. --Manorainjan 02:14, 26 January 2017 (PST)
Unblock request
Hello, I'm TheTVFan. I requested my account to be blocked due to Manoraninjan's harassment. As I see, he is temporarily blocked, so I would like to ask you to unblock my account, so that I start contributing here again. --62.212.73.141 11:25, 27 January 2017 (PST)
- That is such a sad state of affairs - when a valid wiki contributor requests to be personally blocked due to harassment of another user! Can you provide some diffs / links to said conflicts - as I have not followed your plight? Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 12:22, 27 January 2017 (PST)
- Hello Hoof Hearted, you can see some examples of his bad behaviour here (personal attacks), here (harassing) and here (I'm not sure if it's him, but it's a suspect anonymous). Thank you for your reply. Sorry for my use of proxy, but I had to, because in the past the aforementioned user tried to trace my location. 103.10.197.11 12:46, 27 January 2017 (PST)

Are you aware of how to edit the copyright warning as shown at the footer of every page? Someone previously suggested MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning, but its text looks nothing like what is shown in our footer. I'm asking because both the license AND the fair use disclaimer are both linked (together) to the off-site Creative Commons license page - and there should be two separate links. Best, Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 23:21, 31 January 2017 (PST)
- Local Settings Unfortunately, it's not accessible through the MediaWiki interface but rather much deeper in the settings. One would need access to the server for LocalSettings.php. I should get access to that soon but do not have it now. Koavf (talk) 23:37, 31 January 2017 (PST)
- OK, thanks. Can you ask Ray if I can also have access? Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 03:59, 1 February 2017 (PST)
Wiki.Wiki
Hello Koavf: is Wiki.Wiki still active, or is it going to be closed? I'm asking because I saw that they are not accepting new wikis anymore, and I asked this to Ray but he never replied. Thanks, --TheTVFan (talk) 09:46, 1 February 2017 (PST)
- No clue Your guess is as good as mine. Although there is definitely some overlap between users here and there (like Jason and Ray), I am not associated with .wiki at all. I imagine that it is like many of the new flood of TLDs which are underused and many persons thought they could monetize them but couldn't. That's just speculation, of course. Sysop
Hello Koavf, as you are a Staff member, I would like to ask you for administrator rights on this wiki. I will monitor the wiki very actively and the use of the tools can help me in doing maintenance. Best, --TheTVFan (talk) 03:11, 4 February 2017 (PST)
- Thanks I think it's probably fine but let me get an idea of what kind of tasks you have in mind or ways that you want to improve the site and user experience. I don't think it's a problem to give you the rights--I probably will--but I'd like to have an idea of what your interests are. Koavf (talk) 13:03, 4 February 2017 (PST)
- Hello Koavf, thank you for your reply. Sorry if I sent you an email, there were temporary problems in replying here. I would like to do the maintenance of the wiki, with the removal of useless redirects, the removal of unnecessary categories and the creation of new ones, the localisation of all pages on the wiki in the main languages, and the removal of possible spam and vandalism. Best, --TheTVFan (talk) 13:40, 4 February 2017 (PST)

Bot
Hello, I see that lots of pages still have the Template:Inactive - can you please mark me as a bot to change them to Template:Wiki? Thanks, --TheTVFan (talk) 12:14, 6 February 2017 (PST)
- Conversion That would be a little tricky. I actually did it once or twice in Preview just to see what it would look like but they came out malformed. I'd like to also take a few days to see if Mark is available to leave his feedback about the template. Koavf (talk) 12:15, 6 February 2017 (PST)
- Okay, let's wait for Mark's ideas about this topic. Anyway, I can change some of them manually, to make them come out well. TheTVFan (talk) 12:16, 6 February 2017 (PST)
- Thanks And I fear that blocking may be necessary for HAL--that rename request was bizarre and looks like an attempt to 1.) disguise bad behavior and 2.) impersonate you. Koavf (talk) 12:18, 6 February 2017 (PST)
- I also think the same, but maybe we should wait for community's thoughts about it. Also, I removed some of his messages as they were very off-topic. --TheTVFan (talk) 12:19, 6 February 2017 (PST)
- I blocked him because he is using a vandalbot! We should revert his edits, he destroyed the pages... I did this page, WikiIndex talk:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage: if you agree, starting from now, only users who have been verified on that page will have access to AutoWikiBrowser. This is to avoid mass vandalism. --TheTVFan (talk) 12:33, 6 February 2017 (PST)

User pages
Thanks, so far. My user page too, please. What about blocking that IP(range) like it is blocked on all wikipedia projects? Would it be possible to protect all user pages against IP-edit by default? --Manorainjan 10:30, 11 February 2017 (PST)
- Weird. The tab was open in my browser... I'll block them if they cause more problems but until then, I don't think it's necessary. If we did that, you would have been blocked here based on what you did at Ward's Wiki. Koavf (talk) 12:03, 11 February 2017 (PST)
- Also, regarding restricting edit rights by namespace is possible, yes. For instance, the MediaWiki namespace. Koavf (talk) 12:17, 11 February 2017 (PST)
- But User and their Talk would be the same namespace. I'm afraid that would not help. Maybe as parameter of a user-box-template? --Manorainjan 12:35, 11 February 2017 (PST)
- No, they would not. I'm sorry but you do not understand this at all--user namespace and user talk namespace are not the "same namespace". In MediaWiki,
User
is ns-2 andUser talk
is ns-3. Just like how theMediaWiki
namespace (ns-8) is restricted and theMediaWiki talk
namespace (ns-9) is not. Notice how you can post to MediaWiki talk:Sidebar but you cannot modify MediaWiki:Sidebar. Koavf (talk) 13:04, 11 February 2017 (PST)- Right, now while You mention it, I remember. I was just recently reading about the namespaces while I was setting up my own wiki ;-) So it would be well possible IP-protect all user pages. So I suggest You do that. It will make Your life easier. My pages are protected anyway ;-) And I can continue to work on my wiki :-) --Manorainjan 13:19, 11 February 2017 (PST)

Guten Tag
Now, you made me come here, thanks for that, looks interesting. Dan Koehl (talk) 12:44, 14 February 2017 (PST)
- Danke und Willkommen! As you can maybe see, I am staff here. Although I didn't found the project (with Mark, Ray, Ted, etc.) I've been here since close to the beginning. I'm slowly taking the lead on some day-to-day things here but Mark still checks in regularly (as you can see). We have a few helpful admins, too. I hope you have the time and energy to add something here as well. Thanks, Dan. Koavf (talk) 13:04, 14 February 2017 (PST)
Buggy software
Hi, have you noticed the current bugs in the WikiIndex software? I am constantly plagued by three separate (but may be related) issues. First, I regularly get a white page with 'database errors' (or similar wording), secondly, I consistently get a HTTP 500 error - on what seems to be large-ish articles/templates, and finally, it adamantly refuses to allow me any image file uploads.
Have you noticed these? Do you have any ideas, or answers on how to fix it? Regards, Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 07:40, 29 April 2017 (PDT)
- I have noticed the first two errors but not the last one (as I haven't tried to upload anything). Around the turn of the year, I was talking to Mark and Ray about taking over day-to-day maintenance of the site but that fell off as I got busy. Recently, my computer broke and very recently snapped in half, so that has also been a hiccup for me. I don't have access to the server so I can't do any real maintenance of the site (and whether or not I have the skill is an open question, too). Koavf (talk) 07:51, 29 April 2017 (PDT)
- Ouch - your computer issue sounds painful!! :-P
- I presume Brandon still has access to the server? Do you know how to contact him off-wiki? Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 08:08, 29 April 2017 (PDT)
- Brandon does, yes but 1.) I do not know him and 2.) it's my understanding that he doesn't really have availability. :/ You can certainly try or try via Ray but that's all I have at the moment. I want to get back into WikiIndex but I'm going to have to get a computer first (currently using my work machine). I know that's disappointing but it's all I have at the moment. Koavf (talk) 08:19, 29 April 2017 (PDT)
- Brandon found the issue tonight, and has fixed it. We had an errant backup script going which ate up all of the disk space, very sorry -- should be ok now. This summer we're going to put some more time into it to with the goal of migrating to a stand alone implementation of MediaWiki so it's more stable and can be maintained by anyone with MW skills. outdated DIFF-Links
Since wikiindex.com does not work any more, all old DIFF-links from that time do not work any more. http://www.wikiindex.com/index.php?title=User_talk:Ray_King&curid=4230&diff=33754&oldid=33748&rcid=35220 Can You make a BOT that changes com to wiki on talk pages? --Manorainjan 07:15, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
- That doesn't need a bot, it just needs the Special:ReplaceText feature. Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 07:39, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
- I see, the Extension:Replace Text would do I think. --Manorainjan 08:38, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
- I was surprised, that Sean did it in a minute, because I thought, the definition would require some regex and therefore a little more thinking. On purpose I wrote about diff-links. There are a number of other mentioning of the .com, which are not diff-links and where the change does not make sense, rather distorts the meaning. Example. --Manorainjan 09:54, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
- Special:ReplaceText is a fantastic extension, very easy to use, and very 'targetable'! Specifically, when I set it to run, I selected only Talk pages in all namespaces. I've never used AutoWikiBrowser (AWB), so I can't comment, however, I suspect AWB would need specific configuration. The really funky thing about ReplaceText is once you have set it running, it will 'poll' before making changes (to prevent an edit conflict), and will pause itself, and restart automatically. Obviously, nothing is perfect, and for the rare individual examples as highlighted by Manor, a simple undo - with the reason for reverting in the edit summary. Love it for its simplicity and effectiveness! Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 10:33, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
Seems You did not check the other replacements: http://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=WikiIndex_talk:Add_a_Wiki&diff=prev&oldid=197977 Basically not simply wikiindex.com was to be changed in wikiindex.org, but ://wikiindex.com/index.php would have to be the search phrase. Manorainjan 12:01, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
- Fixed your latest find. Your idea of using /index.php might not work properly - because that is only (normally) used in URLs, and not rendered wikitext. I am fairly confident Special:ReplaceText works only on rendered wikitext, and not actual URLs. Could be wrong though. I need to think more on this. I think it only changed 37-ish articles, so not a huge job to check them all. Did you find any it missed out? Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 12:19, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
- When You look at the example which I provided originally and how the extension changed it: http://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=User_talk:Aussiepete&diff=197974&oldid=33758 then how do You get the idea, that replace text would work on the rendered text (only)? --Manorainjan 12:41, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
- You are actually correct. All diffs work by using a full external link URL. I forgot diffs weren't wikilinks. Have you found any more? Appreciate your help, thank-you. :-)) Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 17:10, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
- As You can see in this Example, diffs can be noted down without mentioning any URL and are, as such independent from the domain name. Those notations would not need any replacement after a change in domain name. So You can see, that not all diffs work "by using a full external link URL" Manorainjan 17:56, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
User rights
Hi JAK, good to see you online!
Can you please make a couple of changes to members of the staff user group? Jason really ought to be removed - I'm struggling to find the rationale as to why he was added. And can you please add me? I am trying to look through some of the backend stuff to work out why we still have these annoying bugs. Don't worry - if I do not understand something, I will just look, but leave as is without making any changes.
Best, Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 15:17, 26 May 2017 (PDT)
- Sean, I can happily add you as staff but I don't think it will give you as much access as you would like. Ultimately, what both you and I need are access to the true backend on the server. I was not ever privy to who Jason is nor why he was added as staff but I know that he has something to do with the .wiki TLD and so does Ray. Maybe they are friends? Business partners? Either way, he's not active, so I've removed him as staff and added you. Koavf (talk) 15:40, 26 May 2017 (PDT)
