The former WikiTree wiki site was a freely-edited family tree of all human beings. It was located at WikiTree.org.
The primary goal of the WikiTree project is to provide a central place on the internet for kin information about all people we know ever lived. WikiTree automatically constructs bloodline trees, and will result in the gradual emergence of global family forest of humanity. It might seem a huge undertaking, but in fact it is not. There is very little information that needs to be entered about any person - just their name, names of his/her children, plus birth and death data; other relations can be inferred! WikiTree uses open-source software MediaWiki - the same that is used by Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects. That means we do not have to learn new syntax or editing tools.
WikiTree was started on 26 April 2005 as a free and collaborative project that is edited but also steered by users themselves. Use of WikiTree is - and will always be - provided at no charge. Tomáš J. Fülöpp (a database programmer, social anthropologist and journalist from Slovakia see (http://www.Vacilando.org/index.php?x=110)), currently living in Brussels, Belgium, initiated the WikiTree project. He says, "I would like to state very clearly that I am not in it for any profit. I am thrilled by the idea of joining lonely-growing family trees into one free Wikipedia-like project. The project tries to follow all applicable guidelines successfully set forth in Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. The aims of the project are to be met by the community of people, not by myself. Therefore, if the community decides it is important to change the strategy, refine the aims, or even change name, etc. - as long as it is for the benefit of the project, it can be done."

WikiTree was taken over by Chris Whitten in 2008, and was moved to www.WikiTree.com. Its wiki site was abandoned, and is now just a conventional website, albeit allowing users to edit limited areas (mainly questions and answers). Its original free content license (GFDL) has been revoked, and is now strictly copyright only!
