Category: State — in geographical terms, a state (noun), or specifically a constituent state is a common term used to typically describe the primary or first major geographical and administrative sub-division of a country or sovereign state. Commonly (though not exclusively) used in English-speaking nations, the most well-known use of the term state is in the United States of America; with India and Australia also being primary users of the term.

In other languages and countries, similar names can be: oblast (in Russia), and länder (plural Bundesländer, in Germanic; specifically in Germany and Austria). Canton (French origin, most commonly in Switzerland, also some Spanish-speaking countries), department (French origin, and adopted by the Spanish), province (Roman origin, of the Roman Empire), prefecture (Latin origin, contemporaneous in Japan, China, and other countries), and territory (Australia and Canada) are other words describing the same.
