Category talk:Wiki Edit Mode
16 (now 14) down to 4 process
- I think we need to keep a lid on the number of these 'wiki edit modes', and be clear what the distinctions are. There's very little difference between Category:ReadOnly, Category:Private, Category:InvitationOnly, Category:RequestLogin. A little merging and deleting may be required, but certainly we need a description at the top of each category. -- Harry Wood 12:27, 19 Jan 2006 (EST)
Let's see how many of each of these there are now, and see which ones might be combined or discarded. Seeing overlap in definitions can also be helpful here. The goal is to get down to a manageable list of about 4 items. TedErnst | talk 15:48, 16 Feb 2006 (EST)

point of view: In my mind OpenEdit is totally clear. LoginToEdit is also clear in that there is no human being deciding who gets access. Anyone can do it. All the others require some kind of human intervention to edit (Membership, Subscription, RequestLogin, etc) TedErnst | talk 16:13, 16 Feb 2006 (EST)
another opinion: Private is the only one of these that has to do with read access. qwerty was making this point on IRC the other night. If we're talking about Edit Modes, Private is simply ApprovalRequired. If we're talking about Publically Readable, Private is "no" and every other category here is "yes." So Private is a seperate kind of beast than these other categories. TedErnst | talk 17:37, 17 Feb 2006 (EST)
- Is InviteRequired saying the same thing as ApprovalRequired? ApprovalRequired is a little awkward for me... MarkDilley | talk
- No, they're not the same. I've proposed ApprovalRequired as a replacement for Restricted, Subscription, InvitationRequired, RequestLogin, Censored and Membership because it seems to be a category that encompasses all these others. The actual mechanism of that Approval isn't important to me. If there's another name for this concept, that's fine with me. I just want to group all of those into one. I like the idea that if a human being is required to "grant access" then it falls into a single category, such as "ApprovalRequired". "InviteRequired" works just as well for me, as does "ByInvitation". So to the extent that a human is required for any wikis falling into "Subscription", "RequestLogin" or "Restrited", then these should be in this category. If we do that, I think we're down to something like 5 categories? That would be awesome. --Raymond King | talk 21:39, 22 Feb 2006 (EST)
