Part of the former West Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia is the fourth largest state of Germany by size, the most populous and most densely populated German state. Its state capital is Düsseldorf, though its largest city is Cologne (Köln). It shares international borders with the Netherlands and Belgium, and domestic state borders with Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Hesse.
