Officially the State of Brandenburg (German: Land Brandenburg; Low German: Land Brannenborg; Lower Sorbian: Kraj Bramborska), it is located in the north-east of Germany, in what was the former East Germany (German Democratic Republic). Brandenburg completely encircles the much smaller country capital and city state of Berlin, and borders the states of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Saxony. It shares a national country border with Poland.
