Saxony (German: Sachsen; Upper Saxon: Saggsn; Upper Sorbian: Sakska), officially the Free State of Saxony (German: Freistaat Sachsen; Upper Saxon: Freischdaad Saggsn; Upper Sorbian: Swobodny stat Sakska), is a federal state (Land) in eastern Germany, part of the former East Germany (German Democratic Republic). It shares domestic state borders with Bavaria to its south-west, Thuringia to its west, Saxony-Anhalt to its north-west, and Brandenburg to its north. It shares international borders with Poland to its east, and Czech Republic to its south-east.
