''k2g2'' originally spelled out as a ''Knitting Knerd's Guide to the Galaxy'' which is actually a pun on the ''Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy'' ([[wp:h2g2|h2g2]]) - a pan-galactic encyclopedia, that may have served as inspiration for Wikipedia.  In 2004 the k2g2 community surfaced on Orkut by the name ''Knitting Knerds and Geek Girls'' and in early 2009 the k2g2 Craftopedia went online at [http://www.k2g2.org www.k2g2.org] and [http://www.craftopedia.org www.craftopedia.org].
