Citizendium – the citizens' compendium aims to gather knowledge more effectively than Wikipedia, and aims at quality as well as quantity.

It was founded by Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger in 2006 to remedy what he viewed as problems with Wikipedia. The site requires the use of verifiable real names and academic credentials. Initially, the community considered forking the English Wikipedia, but decided against it.

Larry Sanger became largely inactive in the project after 2010, and it has since had 3-4 different primary editors. In 2020, Larry Sanger transferred ownership of the domain to the current primary editor.
