Hi, please review [[:Category:Pages for deletion|Category:Pages for deletion]] and delete those pages. Several pages have accumulated during the absence of the administrators. Thanks. --[[User:Usa11|Usa11]] ([[User talk:Usa11|talk]]) 16:37, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

== Hello ==
:Good day, thanks for welcoming me. I created a new user page so that's okay, thanks anyway for the proposal. For the wikis that I have marked as to be deleted, they are all unreachable through archive sites such as archive.org, so the actual existence of those wikis is questioned. --[[User:Usa11|Usa11]] ([[User talk:Usa11|talk]]) 12:07, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

Hey HH! Could you please delete Category:Pedosexuality?
The edit you made to [[AboutUs]] - you made as a minor edit. Any reason that you did it that way?  Seems like a major edit to me.  Please see my response to you on the talk page.  Best, [[MarkDilley]]
: I think, to mark an edit minor was a mistake that can happen quickly in the rush, or is it per [[Special:Preferences|preferences]]? What an odd idea of the MediaWiki developers, to provide such an option! Best, [[Wolf Peuker|Wolf]] | <small>[[User talk:Peu|talk]]</small> 12:10, 29 June 2011 (PDT)

Wolf has the answer ''why'' it was marked as a minor edit - my preferences are set like that, because ''most'' of my edits usually are!  And I guess I clicked the save page in haste.  But what are the 'ground rules' here for what consitutes a minor vs major edit?  Is it the amount of 'content', or the quality of the 'context'?  Because my edit on AboutUs was minor in content, but I suppose quite major in context . . . Perhaps we need to copy wikipedias policy on minor edits, and amend it accordingly to suit WikiIndex (unless it is already hiding somewhere on this site!)  And I'll head over to [[Talk:AboutUs]] and discuss further.  Kind regards, [[User:Hoof Hearted|Hoof Hearted]] 12:42, 29 June 2011 (PDT)

: I think minor means a comma or so. The problem with setting this by default is that this mistakes happen. Most edits are minor to the editor, but a ''giant step back for mankind!'' ;) Best --[[Wolf Peuker|Wolf]] | <small>[[User talk:Peu|talk]]</small> 12:52, 29 June 2011 (PDT)

==incels dot wiki vs incelwiki.com==
incels dot wiki was legitimately stolen from the creators and main writers of the material itself, (this is a moderated wiki with only like 3-4 particularly active users ever) and since it was stolen, at least one writer (Wizard32) has put on very sketchy URLs on at least one page of incels dot wiki, which they haven't removed for months.  They host it on their server, which also hosts a site of theirs which we've found is under heavy investigation by law enforcement. They own sanctionedsuicide and we shouldn't be advertising anything on their servers imho.

*"The SanctionedSuicide.com web site is currently providing forum-based coaching, advice, and detailed instructions about how to commit suicide … TO CHILDREN. The site operators and supporters claim that access to the site is denied to anyone under the age of 18. However, a recent survey of the membership clearly shows that approximately 5-8 percent of the membership is under the age of 18. Even a cursory examination of the site clearly demonstrates that the site operators and members are well aware that there are minors using the site. Well as i created that page and own the freakin' wiki then yes i can manipulate the stats. YOUR edits are unconstructive and biased and seek to misrepresent the wiki. Wiki stats can be hardcored to say theres 50,000,000 pages when there could only be 4, while All Pages does show how many there really are, stats can also be wrong, as is the case with my wiki. As far as I am concerned, your edits appear more to be vandalism. [[User:Escyos|Escyos]] 05:07, 28 September 2011 (PDT)
I don't think we should be advertising any sites on their server, especially considering what seem to be sketchy URLs on .wiki rn that was added by a writer after they stole it. The owners of those sites call themselves 'master' and 'sergeantincel', they own incels.is (formerly incels.co/incels.me)/sanctionedsuicide etc, and have been dropped by multiple registrars.

== Tidying ==
Which is why I moved the article I wrote to .com.  We have nothing to do with incels.is and their sites/wikis.  They just let us use a mediawiki installation for a year until they hijacked it. They lorded it over us the entire time and always tried to push sociopathy on the wiki. We created their "general disclaimer" ourselves, and also individually released under CC on our talk pages so they couldn't have them claim we weren't who we were after the new domain.  Since we released under CC individually on talk pages, we aren't pursuing legal options against .wiki but we do have discord records of them claiming that we owned it. (Discord allows exports of private conservations, and retains deleted messagesBut .wiki is mostly inactive compared to .com, and is dramatically smaller as wellIt's our wiki stuck in 2018 plus garbage they added after they banned everyone.  .com also has 5 languages. 14:53, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
Hi Hoof Hearted, <br/>
I think that it is not a good idea to "tidy" user-namespace or discussion pages. And the spaces between <code>==&nbsp;Headline&nbsp;==</code> and headline markup can help recognizing the article structure faster (for me it is like this). <br/>
Best regards. [[Wolf Peuker|Wolf]] | <small>[[User talk:Peu|talk]]</small> 03:47, 2 January 2012 (PST)
:Hi Wolf – and Happy New Year to you :)  In trying to 'improve' [[WikiIndex]], particularly in the internal '[[wiki Links|wikilinks]]' aspect, I've been reading talk pages to see which way discussions and concensus was heading – but many seemed devioid of wikilinks (maybe because these were shortly after the 'birth' of WikiIndex, and said pages and/or templates had yet to be created)! The tidying is primarily adding these wikilinks (which are one of the fundamentals of a 'good' wiki, help prevent duplicate entries being created, and give pointers to future readers of talk pages); and the removal of excessive whitespace – with the aid of the <code><nowiki>{{TOCright}}</nowiki></code> (excessive whitespace is a pain in the rear on low resolution or smaller monitor screens such as netbooks, tablets (iPads and the likes) and smartphones - because you end up having to scroll excessively).<br>
:I do not understand your concern over this: <code>==&nbsp;Headline&nbsp;==</code> – and the different effects it creates between this: <code>==Headline==</code> ?? I ''was'' aware of some older browsers (particularly early Firefox versions) had problems rendering certain web codes – but I thought those issues had been resolved!  I personally use either IE8, Comodo Dragon 16 (based on Google Chrome) or Firefox 8.0 – and don't have any issues of display renderingPerhaps I have mis-understood, if I have, would you be kind enough to explain further. – Best regards, --[[User:Hoof Hearted|Hoof Hearted]] 06:54, 2 January 2012 (PST)

Hello, your work has been awesome. Please don't take my work as meaning it isn't.  There were a lot of mistakes in the deletions, I think because of a template that drew in some delete pages, I was just trying to fix those and understand others, granted hurriedly.  I didn't have a ton of time, so I defaulted to the way I communicate on a wiki most times, via recent changes, I was positive you would see that :-)  I will try to grab some more time to look at other stuff. Please [[AssumeGoodFaith]] with me as will I :-)  I look forward to working wikily with you.  Best, [[MarkDilley]]

==Semantics on pages==
Hi HH, <br/>
Thanks for all your great work: I'm glad to see you taking ownership around here again. Of course, I'm here to complain but on pages like [[Federated wiki (concept)]], you've used semantic elements that don't match the content, like a semi-colon to start a definition list but all you really want is bold. [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 03:31, 12 August 2021 (UTC)
a contact opportunity via wiki mail would be not sooo bad, I think. I uploaded a (kind of) howto and linked it to Tera's talk page - I guess you already have seen it. Best, [[Wolf Peuker|Wolf]] | <small>[[User talk:Peu|talk]]</small> 14:27, 10 January 2012 (PST)
:I'm confused!  [[Federated wiki (concept)]] (the article) does not have any semantic data, because it does not use use the {{Template|Wiki}} infobox template. Semantic MediaWiki will only work with semantic data from Semantic Forms, and they can only work from correctly coded templates such as infoboxesOr am I missing something else? :Hi Wolf - thanks for the pic on Tera's page!  I think there may be a problem with the MediaWiki software though - as I <u>did</u> add a valid e-mail, clicked on the "confirm e-mail address", and I got a confirmation message "WikiIndex requires that you validate your e-mail address before using e-mail features. Activate the button below to send a confirmation mail to your address. The mail will include a link containing a code; load the link in your browser to confirm that your e-mail address is valid." . . . but I never received the e-mail.  I tried the resend e-mail (about three times) but still no e-mail.  Also, it won't let me amend my signature either (which is why I still have the default signature), nor will it let me change my timezone (which should be GMT). Maybe one of the Admins can look into this, thanks, --[[User:Hoof Hearted|Hoof Hearted]] 15:35, 10 January 2012 (PST)
::Yeah, pardon me: I think my earlier post was too vague. Starting a line with a semi-colon will create a [https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Element/dl description or definition list]. These liss should be followed by one or more items that start with a colon. E.g. below:
::I see. BTW: My screenshot was so large as to have enough context. There's no reason to change timezone or signature. But, yes, the e-mail options were a suggestion too (if there are no deeper problems with the e-mail settings). What about spam filtering? ::Etc. If you want to make something bold, use three apostrophes: this will employ the [https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Element/b b or bring to attention element]. If you start a definition list but don't follow it with definitions, that's poor HTML semantics and is confusing to things like search engines indexing pages or screen readers attempting to vocalize the content of a page, etc. Does that make sense? [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 23:05, 12 August 2021 (UTC)
:::Ah, okay, I understand your point now.  Thanks for clarifying, and sorry for my delay in replying – I was sleeping on my thoughts!  Howeverrrrr, I am not sure I 100% agree – though I am open to further reasoning. My understanding, and please forgive me if I'm wrong, I thought that [[:Category:MediaWiki|MediaWiki]] is based on [[wikitext]], rather than [[:Category:HTML|HTML]]?  I accept that MediaWiki still relies on a small number of HTML elements (along with [[:Category:Cascading Style Sheets|CSS]], {{Wp|Unicode}}, and [[:Category:JavaScript|JavaScript]]), particularly where there is no direct corresponding function within wikitext; a few examples being: <tt><nowiki><bdi></nowiki></tt>, <tt><nowiki><pre></nowiki></tt>, <tt><nowiki></nowiki></tt>, and <tt><nowiki></nowiki></tt>.  But there are many more elements that are considered highly verboten within wikitext (especially such as MediaWiki), examples <tt><nowiki><dl>, <dt>, and <dd></nowiki></tt> (for descriptions, which you eloquently show above with use of the colon and semi-colon), <tt><nowiki><ol></nowiki></tt> (for numbered lists, wikitext uses the hash), <tt><nowiki><h1> to <h6></nowiki></tt> (for levels of section headings, wikitext uses the equals sign - and I would imagine any editor on Wikipedia who used HTML to create section heading to be robustly chastised!), <tt><nowiki><p></nowiki></tt> (for creating paragraphs, when a simple carriage return suffices for wikitext).

::So do we just leave them as they were when in the 'active wiki' template?  Apologies, I forgot what I was doing, I've been out of the loop for a while :(  [[User:Hoof Hearted|Hoof Hearted]] • <small>[[User talk:Hoof Hearted|talk2HH]]</small> 10:25, 30 August 2012 (PDT)
:::As for robots, indexers, and accessibility assisted technologies, I was under the impression that they all worked on the <u>rendered</u> page, rather than its constructed elements?  Again, please correct me if I am wrong.

== I "tweaked" your rights ;-) ==
:::Finally, and I guess this goes back to the original reason for your comment to me, search engine optimisation and performance.  Again, my own thinking here; because articles here on WikiIndex are generally (a) very small, when compared to Wikipedia pages, and (b) follow a nigh-on identical format and structure (for articles on wiki, wiki engines, wiki farms, and wiki people) – do we actually need section headings (apart from long articles, or when section headings are highly desirable to separate specific areas within the prose)?  And a follow-on from that, if yes, is there any quantifiable value in a search engine indexing say the section(s) on references and / or external links?  Surely, surely, surely, for those who search and then find WikiIndex in search providers, we want search results to KEEP folks here in WikiIndex, rather than display searches for external links / sources which will take folks AWAY from WikiIndex?
Congratulations! <br/>

Hi,  curious why you think there is a need to [http://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=WikiIndex%3ACommunity_portal&diff=139417&oldid=127437 protect this page]?  I don't see it being vandalized, and even if it was, I don't see it as a problem in normal Recent Changes patrolling fixesLook forward to your thoughts on that. Best, [[MarkDilley]]
::::Thanks for the thoughtful response. To be clear, my main motivation is proper semantics for accessibility's sake and then things like machine indexing and search engine optimization, etc. Whatever we insert as MediaWiki's code (such as <nowiki>'''bold'''</nowiki> text) gets output as HTML because that's what everything on the Web is, so misusing tags—either by directly inputting the HTML or by using some wikitext that is then converted into HTML—is bad. I don't know that we need headings on pages that are short but I'll defer to you if you prefer one style over another. I do think that making a good outline structure is good for things like generating outlines with OPML or having anchors in a page that are linkable but it's not something that I think is urgent. : Hi Mark.  It was already protected by TeraS ([http://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=WikiIndex:Community_portal&diff=86778&oldid=86744 here]) - all I changed was the 'move' function to sysops only.  Registered users can still edit it as before, they just now can't move it.  And I have to confess, I often 'forget' to check the RecentChanges . . . I suppose we all work in different ways.  Anyway, if you wish, I can revert my change in protection.  Best regards, [[User:Hoof Hearted|Hoof Hearted]] • <small>[[User talk:Hoof Hearted|talk2HH]]</small> 14:21, 31 August 2012 (PDT)
Many thanks for the update! :-) I missed that it was previously protected - no worries - if I feel like I want to unprotect the whole thing later, I will just be bold :-)  RecentChanges is pretty much the first thing I read on most wiki! :-)  Best, [[MarkDilley]]

Here is another [http://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=Category:All&action=history question] for me. Doesn't look like that page has been spammed very much, curious about your thinking.  Best, [[MarkDilley]]
==Editing others' comments==
: That was spammed really badly on [http://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=Category:All&diff=120899&oldid=84941 April 2012] (a really massive amount of spam links), and then five times in 2007 - all by IP editors. Granted, I agree it hasn't been spammed 'much' recently - but I feel that [[:Category:All]] is a 'major' category - effectively a 'front door' to WikiIndex, and it is for this latter reason why I personally think this needs protection (and it is only protected from IP editors - regular logged-in users can still edit). IMVHO - there are just some crucial pages which we should pre-emtively protect.  And don't the regular sysops on here have a hard-enough time in keeping on top of the spammers? :-/  [[User:Hoof Hearted|Hoof Hearted]] • <small>[[User talk:Hoof Hearted|talk2HH]]</small> 08:48, 8 September 2012 (PDT)
I'm not sure that I understand [https://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=User_talk:Zhuyifei1999&diff=0&oldid=205760 this spate] of edits. Why are you adding links into others' posts on a user talk page? [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 03:27, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
: For me, an [[OpenEdit]] [[wiki]] is extremely important.  I personally think an open door to new editors is important - that said, I will be fine leaving it protected for now.  Cheers, [[MarkDilley]]
:I think that it is very helpful to add [[wikilink]]s, as they provide valuable [[backlink]]s, and breadcrumbs to any previous discussions on said subjects.  I personally always use backlinks to find established [[consensus]], or other trains of thought when trying to improve all articles here on WikiIndex, including policy.

:Hi - yes, WikiIndex is very useful, and interesting - I never new just how many wikis were/are out there!!!
:Hello.  As a general rule, here on WikiIndex, we do not delete articles on wiki which ''some'' people might find offensive or upsettingI have spent considerable time reading CWCki, along with its Wikipedia article and associated WP talk page.
:Your comment on the Cite extension should really be addressed to either [[MarkDilley]] (who is the site owner), or to [[:Category talk:Active administrators of this wiki]]; as I'm not a 'crat (just a mere sysop :p ).  Personally though, I'm not sure of the importance of the Cite extension - here at WikiIndex, we basically just catalogue other wikis.  As yet, we don't need to provide any verifiability here on WikiIndex, we leave the verifiability issue down to the actual wikis themselves.  Can you think of any specific instances here on WikiIndex where using footnotes/references would be useful?  Thanks for your interesting thoughts though, and keep up your help on here, best regards, [[User:Hoof Hearted|Hoof Hearted]] • <small>[[User talk:Hoof Hearted|talk2HH]]</small> 03:01, 13 September 2012 (PDT)

:::I'm still not convinced we need it (and I'm not being hostile to your suggestion either :-) ).  [[WikiIndex:About#What_WikiIndex_is_not|This section]] touches on what WikiIndex is for, and [[WikiIndex:General disclaimer|this disclaimer]] also sort of reinforces that position.  The simplest way to provide 'citation'-types of links is just add a URL in single square brackets, nested within the textIf more generic external links were needed, you can add them under an 'External links' sub-heading (and list them by number using the hash <nowiki>#</nowiki> key, and then add an in-line superscript comment - something like 'see external link No.1').  Best regards, --[[User:Hoof Hearted|Sean, aka <small>Hoof Hearted</small>]] • [[:Category:Active administrators of this wiki|Admin]] • <small>[[User talk:Hoof Hearted|talk2HH]]</small> 07:13, 15 November 2012 (PST)

== Blocking old IPs ==
:This is my own personal comments.  First and foremost, I do not like CWCki - I do not like the way they obsessively detail every minute detail of the life of the person who is the subject of said wiki.  However, I must stress in the strongest possible way - my own personal dislike is absolutely not grounds to delete its entry here on WikiIndex.  Saying that, I agree that our own article needs a considerable re-write.  Unfortunately, I am just not familiar enough with the content of the wiki overall, so it would not be appropriate for me to submit my own thoughts.

It's been 5 years since any of those IPs vandalized the site, so there is pretty much no chance that they are used by the same person. I personally don't think IP addresses should be banned for more then a month unless there is persistent vandalism over a very long period of time from it.
:As to the Wikipedia article, I find the tone of its coverage very alarming. Strong viewpoints are endemic in that WP article, and there is much bias, and very little neutrality. Discussions on its talk page continuously highlight those issues, but without any real action on balancing and toning down the WP article!

As for Plasmarelais, I don't think there was any malicious intent involved there - the redirect worked because of the site's [[Special:interwiki|interwiki]] feature. '''[[User talk:Elassint|Elassint]]'''  14 September 2012
:In light of my comments, please feel free to edit our entry here on WikiIndexOf course, please ensure that your own additons are both factual and neutralKind regards. :Blocking old IPs . . . yes, I suppose you are correct on that.  In my defence, I'm using a netbook, and I often miss the bottom of the page (forget to scroll down) on my woefully small screenI've noticed that many had been previously blocked for short-term periodsI'll refrain from this from now on. :)
:Re [[User:Plasmarelais|Plasmarelais]] - I'm not at all convinced of any 'innocence'.  Plasmarelais is an admin on Wikia - and is no doubt very aware of the intricate nature of combining a 'redirect' with an 'interwiki'.  IMVHO, that was quite a sneaky thing to do - and it took me a while to figure out how to 'undo' a new page creation (with no history) which went straight to a hard redirect.  The correct and decent thing would be to just have a common-or-garden http:// url to his Wikia page - not the forced redirect!  Finally, why just create a forced redirect to another wiki site, but not carry out any constructive editing to this wiki?  Rgds  [[User:Hoof Hearted|Hoof Hearted]] • <small>[[User talk:Hoof Hearted|talk2HH]]</small> 13:39, 14 September 2012 (PDT)

If you look at [[Special:NewFiles]], you will see that many file uploads fail to display thumbnail, and many will also fail to display at any manually selected pixel size other than their original upload size.  Regrettably, I don't have server access, so I am not able to resolve this issue (and I have no expertise in in that area).  My only suggestion is to manually resize logos to a maximum 300px and then upload againApologies for not being able to offer a better solution.  [[User:Hoof Hearted|<big>Sean P</big>, <small>''aka'' Hoof Hearted</small>]] • [[:Category:Active administrators of this wiki|Admin]] / [[WikiIndex:Bureaucrats|'Crat]] / [[Staff]] • <small>[[User talk:Hoof Hearted|talk2HH]]</small> 15:29, 25 November 2022 (UTC)

==[[WikiIndex:Merge policy|Merge policy?]]==
I checked the [[Althistory]] page, and it says that the page should be merged with another one. OK so far, a long time ago I did that at WP, and kinda remember it also involves merging the histories so nothing is lost. But what is WI's merging policy actually? It's still a red link...--[[User:Max Sinister|Max Sinister]] ([[User talk:Max Sinister|talk]]) 23:55, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
:You are indeed correct that our merge policy is still a red link :-p  Indeed, many basic policies were red links until the last few years! I will endeavour to make a start on that specific policy very soon.

== Tags etc ==
:The actual mechanism for [[Special:MergeHistory|Merging]] can only be carried out by [[sysop]]s, due to the licensing need to retain [[edit history]] (and [[attribution]]) of both articles.  Whilst the merge function is automated, it does need oversight - because not every edit can be merged - so discretion needs to be observed before actioning it.

Hi Hoof Hearted. Thanks for your updates to my page on [[LGBT History UK]]. A couple of questions:
:Regarding the Althistory, and indeed all merge requests - sometimes, an editor may mark an article for merging (in good faith) - when in fact, it should remain in its own right.  Aside any genuine but accidental duplicate entries - the most common reason for mistakenly tagging for a merge is when a wiki site has changed host by way of [[fork]]ing (and instead of creating a new article for the new host - an editor may simply update the original wiki site to the URLs of the new host!).  The original wiki site, at its original host should be preserved as its own article here (annotating its status if necessary as abandoned or dead), and using a hat-note template to point to any new host.  I notice that it was [[User talk:Ismael755|Ismael755]] who added the merge tag to [[Althistory]] (I think I was on an extended wiki break at that time - personal issues), and he also added a new article [[Alternate Future Wiki]].  Glancing very briefly, it appears that both sites co-existed, though I guess they now are merged into one site on Wikia.  There is also the same issue with [[Future]] and [[The Future Wiki]]!
*You've changed my categories to tags. Could you possibly explain what the difference is, as I can't find any documentation about this?
*I notice that some Wikis (including [[LGBT History UK]]) don't show up in the list of pages for a particular category/tag when I'm logged out, but do when I 'm logged in. Can you explain this, please?
Thanks - [[User:Ross Burgess|Ross Burgess]] ([[User talk:Ross Burgess|talk]]) 23:23, 30 October 2012 (PDT)
:Hi Ross.  The long answer to your first question on tags is here - [[Template talk:Tag]].  The short answer is basically because WikiIndex is merely an index, we don't have conventional articles in the main namespace - we generally use categories for non-wiki specific info, hence why we use tags to wikilink categories within the prose of the text, rather than a meaningless list at the bottom of the page.
:For your second point . . . I have absolutely no idea! :( I'm also aware of the differing look between when I'm logged in and logged out - but wasn't sure it that was simply due to my browser (Maxthon).  Maybe if you leave a note at [[:Category talk:Active administrators of this wiki]], maybe one of the MediaWiki geeks might be able to answer that question.

:In summary, if two articles have been created about an identical site on an identical host - the articles should be merged.  But if they are or were two separate wiki sites (even if say on Wikia), but have themselves since merged (usually by Wikia), the article here referring to the 'original' (even if dead) should be retained - and ideally archived links found to support it.

Here's [[mw:Canonical interwiki prefixes|an essay]] I wrote concerning standardization of interwiki prefixes. Development of [[mw:InterwikiMap|InterwikiMap]] is proceeding briskly; after it passes code review at WMF's Git repository, I'll start deploying it more widely. Meanwhile, I want to create a standardized list of interwiki prefixes for propagation across the wikisphere. I'm hoping that the proper prefix will be pretty obvious for most of those 20,000 wikis, but I haven't yet delved deeply into it because some data is currently processing. Maybe later today I'll be able to take a closer look.
::Gotcha. Thanks for your responsiveness and clarity Sean, as always!  What are the steps we can take to update/upgrade our software configuration?  Best, [[MarkDilley]]

Right now, the InterwikiMap extension only propagates and retrieves prefixes and URLs. I think it should also handle other site information &mdash; basically, everything we can get our hands on that might be useful. I started a list at [[mw:Extension:InterwikiMap/Data]]. This extension will extend the API to both make more data available (e.g. for use by bots that could help update Wikiindex pages with new statistics, if you want to allow those on your site) and to retrieve such data from other wikis). A wiki could also create a custom filter saying that it wants to, say, only include prefixes that either are of a wikifactor 10 or better, or are on the whitelist. This could be rather powerful when all the functionality has been developed, and make some pretty useful improvements to Wikiindex possible. Please let me know if you have some ideas for functionality that should go in the extension. Thanks. [[User:Leucosticte|Leucosticte]] ([[User talk:Leucosticte|talk]]) 10:15, 20 November 2012 (PST)

== [[Special:ReplaceText]] ==
== Small trouble with a vandal ==
If you want to replace MediaWiki with Wikia as the engine in all [[:category:wikia|wikia]] articles then that is the feature to use, there's no reason to mess around with bots.
:[[Special:ReplaceText]] will only work on one string of text - my issue would need to look at two strings, but replace just one . . . so I can't see how that would work?????  Or have I missed something? :/ <<<confused.com>>>

Frankly I don't see how Wikia counts as its own engine however, it's just MediaWiki with an ugly skin and some features. '''[[User talk:Elassint|Elassint]]'''  24 November 2012
Hi! I'm a wiki editor for the [[Independent Fallout Wiki]] and I had to deal with a vandal on our page. Essentially, an anon edit posted links to something completely irrelevant to the subject matter, as well as posting misinformation that really had no relation to the article. They also dead-named on our admins.
:Wikia ''may'' be based on MediaWiki, but it is so uniquely modified to the extent that no other host or provider can display the same as Wikia - hence why it should be differenciated from traditional MediaWiki sites.  MediaWiki has spawned many clones (and not all MediaWiki look-alikes are written in [[:Category:PHP|PHP]]), and those are recognised as a [[:Category:Wiki Engine|wiki engine]] in their own right.  Indeed, [[WikiMatrix]] now lists Wikia as a separate engine [http://www.wikimatrix.org/wiki/Wikia:intro here] (sadly, WikiMatrix seems offline at the moment).  To list all individual Wikia wikis in the [[:category:MediaWiki]] is highly distorting, especially to those genuine MediaWiki sites, and especially when [[user:emijrp|emijrp]] finishes his bot trawl through all 200,000 Wikias.  IMVHO, I would suggest that it is best to index Wikia wikis under a Wikia wiki engine (especially as there are over 200,000 of them!), and keep the Wikia category a sub-category of MediaWiki. Hi Hoof,
:Hello C0NN1E, welcome to WikiIndex.  I'm sorry for not noticing the [[vandal]]ism.  I now blocked the IP for one week, but if you notice anyone who is spamming or vandalising articles, please tag their user page or user talk page with either <tt>{{Template|vandal}}</tt> or <tt>{{Template|spammer}}</tt>. Best regards, and happy new year!  [[User:Hoof Hearted|<big>Sean P</big>, <small>''aka'' Hoof Hearted</small>]] • [[:Category:Active administrators of this wiki|Admin]] / [[WikiIndex:Bureaucrats|'Crat]] / [[Staff]] • <small>[[User talk:Hoof Hearted|talk2HH]]</small> 14:24, 2 January 2023 (UTC)
I started creating a wikitable of all of WikiIndex's data: http://meta.inclumedia.org/wiki/User:Nathan_Larson/Wikitable My intent was to then gather even more data, by polling all of those wikis' APIs for their [[mw:API:Meta|site info]], and add that to the table as well. However, as the size of the table increases, it becomes unmanageable for MediaWiki. I think the software just wasn't designed to handle tables (or pages) of that size.

Therefore, what I will do is create a clone version of WikiIndex that allows large amounts of data to be accessed in the way that MediaWiki's designers intended, which was through templates and categories. So, I will significantly revise [[Template:Wiki]] to include the stuff that I need. And then you guys can look at it and see what aspects of that, if any, you want to incorporate into your site.
::Hi again, Hoof Hearted! It looks like the same IP returned a week later trying to remove constructive edits on the same page. I marked their user page under the <nowiki>{{vandal}}</nowiki> template. [[User:C0NN1E|C0NN1E]] ([[User talk:C0NN1E|talk]]) 20:51, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

There is quite a lot of data out there, if you want it. My suggestion would be to use collapsible sections in the wiki template, like what you see in the [[mw:Template:Extension]] template that is used in pages like [[mw:Extension:InterwikiMap]] or [[mw:Extension:FlaggedRevs]]. Notice how you can expand a lengthy list of parameters, hooks, etc. Each of those hook (hook1, hook2, etc.) also puts the page in the appropriate category. We could do the same with languages, for those wikis that have more than one language, as well as other kinds of data. There is a lot of potential to make it easier for people to find wikis meeting various criteria that they're interested in.

:Hi, and sorry for the delay in replying.
:Do you have URLs for Telepedia?  And do you know the rationale for the name change?

Using bots, it shouldn't be too hard to maintain, either. I'm going to create the prototype and put all the bot code out there along with instructions on how to use it. I think it would be cool to put on the [[Template:Wiki]] a search bar that lets you type in, say, "Barack Obama" and see that wiki's article on that subject. That way, users interested in seeing what a wiki has to say about a particular topic could find out quickly, in one step rather than two. However, I think I would have to write a new extension to implement that functionality, and MarkDilley would have to install it. [[PynchonWiki]] has been restored (not by me). I don't agree with your decision to delete it or that we can't include meta-sites within this index. If these were several unrelated, independently-operated sites with the same topic, I could see how a category would suffice, but in this case, the were several related sites all managed by the same entity. It's not quite the same as Wikia, but that is an example of when a broader site has a listing, even though it's pages may not be editable. Yes, I should get off my lazy butt and create entries for the individual wikis, but even when I do that I think we still should include the meta-site in the index. On the "stub" to "good" article threshold, I believe that's more a determination of the wiki administrators from wiki to wiki than the software. My recent wiki on Shoutwiki features articles that Wikipedia would consider stubs, but they are meant to be short, as they give a simple overview of things useful for MediaWiki beginners.
:Hello, and apologies for late reply.  Apart from trawling through [[:Category:Science]], it is difficult for me to make personal recommendations.  [[SklogWiki]] is a high-level science wiki, run by a former WikiIndex editor.  [[Psiram]] appears to be a quality site, its German language version is fairly active.  [[RationalWiki (en)]] includes lots of science, as do the various [[:Category:Uncyclopedia]]s.  Best regards, [[User:Hoof Hearted|<big>Sean P</big>, <small>''aka'' Hoof Hearted</small>]] • [[:Category:Active administrators of this wiki|Admin]] / [[WikiIndex:Bureaucrats|'Crat]] / [[Staff]] • <small>[[User talk:Hoof Hearted|talk2HH]]</small> 11:36, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

As for my logo creation skills, I'm fairly decent at creating simple text logos, but I'm not a very good artist. However, we could probably make a really small version of the current wiki logo our favicon, which should be easy to create in any picture editor.

:Hi again - I'll answer it here, so as not to break up the conversation!
== Are you OK, Sean? ==

:Stub vs good . . . hmmm.  Is there a rough ballpark default figure?  Reason I ask is that for [[:Category:MoinMoin|MoinMoin]] - I've been counting all pages in their listings, but (for MediaWiki) if we knew the stub threshold was - say 500 bytes, then we could make the necessary adjustments for the MoinMoin listings. I also feel your pain on the MediaWiki stub vs good - if you look at [[Ross-Tech Wiki]] (a wiki which I often use), their own stats show 1182 'good' pages, and their [http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php?title=Special:ShortPages&limit=5000 short pages] (when the url is manually manipulated to show all pages on the wiki) lists 1267 pages - and many of those 'short pages' are actually valid and complete pages!  (Actually, it seems that only 85 are classed as 'short' - 1267 minus 1182 - and that threshold seems to be around 315 bytes). <ramblings out loud>
For some weeks (it feels like it), I've tried to login, but the wiki was always down. That's why I wondered whether something had happened to you.--[[User:Max Sinister|Max Sinister]] ([[User talk:Max Sinister|talk]]) 21:30, 3 April 2024 (UTC)

:Favicon . . . I was thinking of something like just the black 'W' and the red '<font color=red>I</font>' ('W<font color=red>I</font>'), as scaled-down full-size logos can often look dreadful.  The Wikipedia 'W' and the Google 'g' seem to work well.  If you can do something along those lines, we'll then need to persuade Mark to include it.<wink>

==[[Sturmkrieg]]==
The name I was using was suggested by one of your administrators.  If you want to change it, than please do not change it to something biased.  Your changes have all resulted in biased titles that give the impression that it was their idea when it wasn't.  If you want to keep pages about them, that's fine, but please don't make titles that make the original wiki seem like some sort of crap side thing.  [[User:Sturmkrieger|Sturmkrieger]] ([[User talk:Sturmkrieger|talk]]) 09:29, 19 March 2013 (PDT)
:Erm . . . you are correct - it was a 'suggestion', and not a statement of fact.  Also, please be aware, the administrator who suggested that name to you is just one of a team of admins (and who is also quite new to WikiIndex) - and whilst we are all part of said 'team', we all sometimes have slightly differing ideas.  Furthermore, any 'administrator' action can be overturned by the site owners (and or beaurocrats).
:The crucial issue here though, is that we have clearly defined article naming conventions - [[WikiIndex:Naming Conventions]].  Perhaps you'd be kind enough to read it, instead of accusing me of bias!  The name I changed it to reflects the actual domain of your wiki.  Please remember, your wiki is very new, whereas the other wiki has been established for a long time.  Your wiki is sparse, devoid of content (apart from bitching about the other wiki), lacks page views (see [[wikiFactor]]), and lacks any graphical content or customisation - whereas the other wiki has tons of content, has established page views, has amazing graphics and customisation - and generally looks a very professional wiki.  Now, whilst I understand [[User:Arcane|Arcane's]] comment about 'first come, first dibs on article name' - I don't actually agree.  As it stands, we have two wikis on the same subject matter - one new and devoid of content, and the other long established and very popular.  If, in time, your own wiki grows and matures to a similar level as the other wiki - we can then rename the other wiki, and create a disambiguation.
:Please, be advised to direct your efforts into building up your own wiki, and then reap the rewards from your efforts.  You will win no friends here on WikiIndex (and maybe not on your own wiki) if you continue with your antagonistic efforts.  Try to work ''with'' the other wiki, rather than swimming against the tide.  If you can't do that, then just agree to disagree, draw a line in the sand, and move on - respecting each others point of view.  I wish you well, best regards  --[[User:Hoof Hearted|Sean, aka <small>Hoof Hearted</small>]] • [[:Category:Active administrators of this wiki|Admin]] • <small>[[User talk:Hoof Hearted|talk2HH]]</small> 11:28, 19 March 2013 (PDT)
::I suggested the name of Sturmkrieger's wiki (as in, the site the user administrates) be changed to reflect his stated intentions for his wiki. To be exact, the name I saw for his wiki (on the header bar of my browser and his homepage) was "Sturmkrieg". My suggested name would have helped you dispel any confusion anyone trying to visit the site "Sturmkrieg" on the internet might have when trying to find the wiki of the name (since two wikis now share the same name). I did not intend to imply that this user wiki should be renamed here on WikiIndex to "The True Sturmkrieger Wiki", that was something I should have clarified and I apologize for the confusion. I plan to stand by and defer to yours and the other senior administrators judgment on this matter (especially since I'm still inexperienced, as this incident has proven), and shall direct this user's further inquires to be dealt with by someone with more experience. As for naming comment, I share the same sentiments and believe the first wiki should not be confused with the second until the second reaches a similar level of maturity regarding site content (then a rename/disambiguation could be discussed), and if I caused any confusion or made an erroneous judgment, I apologize for my indiscretion and/or carelessness.

A warm welcome to my talk / discussion page, 192.168.144.2 :-)

If you wish to talk to me about a new subject not already listed here, please click on the 'new section' (or '+') tab at the top of the screen to start a new subject. Or if you wish to reply to an existing comment (either on my talk page or any other talk page), please click on the section [edit] to the right of the relevant subject header line, and please indent your replies with one (or more) colon(s) (:) as appropriate. Please, PLEASE add your signature (-- ~~~~) to all comments or replies you make.

If comments or questions are asked on this page, I will leave my answer here (so please add my talk page to your 'watchlist'). For comments or questions left on other pages, my replies or answers will be left on those specific pages (so again, please add those to your watchlist if you wish to follow any replies).

If you miss previous discussions (which are now no longer visible), you may look through any historical items of discussion by clicking on the 'history' tab at the top of the page. Occasionally, I might remove and archive completed topics which may no longer be relevant, and there is no point in having a cluttered talk page!

incels dot wiki vs incelwiki.com[edit]

incels dot wiki was legitimately stolen from the creators and main writers of the material itself, (this is a moderated wiki with only like 3-4 particularly active users ever) and since it was stolen, at least one writer (Wizard32) has put on very sketchy URLs on at least one page of incels dot wiki, which they haven't removed for months. They host it on their server, which also hosts a site of theirs which we've found is under heavy investigation by law enforcement. They own sanctionedsuicide and we shouldn't be advertising anything on their servers imho.

This is not a group I would trust as a source on even their own sites Following reports of minors on their sanctionedsuicide.com (now sanctioned-suicide.org) dying, Epik dropped all their sites, followed by what seems to be Tucows or Njalla. Years ago it was Afilias that dropped all their sites.

"In the United States, anyone under the age of 18 is legally a minor. There is no ambiguity here. These are children, the site operators, and members know it, yet continue to discuss the act of suicide in great detail as if they are above or beyond both legal or moral reach." --owner of fixthe26th

(Discord allows exports of private conservations, and retains deleted messages) But .wiki is mostly inactive compared to .com, and is dramatically smaller as well. It's our wiki stuck in 2018 plus garbage they added after they banned everyone. .com also has 5 languages. 14:53, 8 July 2021 (UTC)

If you still want to keep incels.wiki on, can we have our own page? We also run a huge wiki farm and can add our others, most of which have nothing to do with incels William Lupinacci (talk) 15:06, 8 July 2021 (UTC)

Semantics on pages[edit]

Thanks for all your great work: I'm glad to see you taking ownership around here again. Of course, I'm here to complain but on pages like Federated wiki (concept), you've used semantic elements that don't match the content, like a semi-colon to start a definition list but all you really want is bold. Koavf (talk) 03:31, 12 August 2021 (UTC)

I'm confused! Federated wiki (concept) (the article) does not have any semantic data, because it does not use use the {{Wiki}} infobox template. Semantic MediaWiki will only work with semantic data from Semantic Forms, and they can only work from correctly coded templates such as infoboxes. Or am I missing something else? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 22:47, 12 August 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, pardon me: I think my earlier post was too vague. Starting a line with a semi-colon will create a description or definition list. These liss should be followed by one or more items that start with a colon. E.g. below:
Hoof Hearted
A user at WikiIndex
An all-around kewl d00d
My friend
Etc. If you want to make something bold, use three apostrophes: this will employ the b or bring to attention element. If you start a definition list but don't follow it with definitions, that's poor HTML semantics and is confusing to things like search engines indexing pages or screen readers attempting to vocalize the content of a page, etc. Does that make sense? Koavf (talk) 23:05, 12 August 2021 (UTC)
Ah, okay, I understand your point now. Thanks for clarifying, and sorry for my delay in replying – I was sleeping on my thoughts! Howeverrrrr, I am not sure I 100% agree – though I am open to further reasoning. My understanding, and please forgive me if I'm wrong, I thought that MediaWiki is based on wikitext, rather than HTML? I accept that MediaWiki still relies on a small number of HTML elements (along with CSS, Unicode, and JavaScript), particularly where there is no direct corresponding function within wikitext; a few examples being: <bdi>, <pre>, , and . But there are many more elements that are considered highly verboten within wikitext (especially such as MediaWiki), examples <dl>, <dt>, and <dd> (for descriptions, which you eloquently show above with use of the colon and semi-colon), <ol> (for numbered lists, wikitext uses the hash), <h1> to <h6> (for levels of section headings, wikitext uses the equals sign - and I would imagine any editor on Wikipedia who used HTML to create section heading to be robustly chastised!), <p> (for creating paragraphs, when a simple carriage return suffices for wikitext).
As for robots, indexers, and accessibility assisted technologies, I was under the impression that they all worked on the rendered page, rather than its constructed elements? Again, please correct me if I am wrong.
Finally, and I guess this goes back to the original reason for your comment to me, search engine optimisation and performance.
I greatly appreciate your learned advice and expertise. WikiIndex is a lonely ship to steer alone! Best regards always, Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 14:54, 13 August 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the thoughtful response. To be clear, my main motivation is proper semantics for accessibility's sake and then things like machine indexing and search engine optimization, etc. Whatever we insert as MediaWiki's code (such as '''bold''' text) gets output as HTML because that's what everything on the Web is, so misusing tags—either by directly inputting the HTML or by using some wikitext that is then converted into HTML—is bad. I don't know that we need headings on pages that are short but I'll defer to you if you prefer one style over another. I do think that making a good outline structure is good for things like generating outlines with OPML or having anchors in a page that are linkable but it's not something that I think is urgent. Koavf (talk) 15:02, 14 August 2021 (UTC)

Editing others' comments[edit]

I'm not sure that I understand this spate of edits. Why are you adding links into others' posts on a user talk page? Koavf (talk) 03:27, 17 August 2021 (UTC)

I think that it is very helpful to add wikilinks, as they provide valuable backlinks, and breadcrumbs to any previous discussions on said subjects. I personally always use backlinks to find established consensus, or other trains of thought when trying to improve all articles here on WikiIndex, including policy.
I accept that it is forbidden to edit other users talk pages on Wikipedia - but we are NOT Wikipedia, and we have no need to be bound by their policies! Best regards. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 22:43, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

CWCki[edit]

I wonder if you could review whether the CWCki can remain on this wiki or whether a substantial rewrite is needed? The wiki is linked with a website that has been accused of stalking and vulnerable users, and I have to tell you that the subject of the wiki is one of the victims.

172.26.22.41 00:47, 25 August 2021 (UTC)

Hello. As a general rule, here on WikiIndex, we do not delete articles on wiki which some people might find offensive or upsetting. I have spent considerable time reading CWCki, along with its Wikipedia article and associated WP talk page.
This is my own personal comments.
As to the Wikipedia article, I find the tone of its coverage very alarming. Strong viewpoints are endemic in that WP article, and there is much bias, and very little neutrality. Discussions on its talk page continuously highlight those issues, but without any real action on balancing and toning down the WP article!
In light of my comments, please feel free to edit our entry here on WikiIndex. Of course, please ensure that your own additons are both factual and neutral. Kind regards. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 02:06, 27 August 2021 (UTC)

Turkey on the main page[edit]

I don't think it's nice to shove it as the first thing people read when they visit the wiki, especially in that demeaning voice. It's good to know about Turkey's censorship (among many other problems), but at least water it down and don't make it political, because there are much worse things than having a wiki blocked. Imagine it saying "Thank goodness not all countries are like United States!!!! Cherish your school/market not getting sh0t down every other day!" -172.26.1.10 15:43, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

As utterly tragic and heartbreaking the many school shootings in the US are - unless there is a wiki site which deals with the said issue, it has no place here on WikiIndex. Kind regards Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 14:54, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
I have to agree to that. This wiki should not get politicized. It shall not become the pressure relief valve for people who got no other place to express their political frustrations. Compared to this outdated remark about Türkiye (which is the proper name of that nation) the censorship for everything Russian in EU is massive and hypocritical as can be. We should not get involved into this mess here at all. --Manorainjan 06:01, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
Manorainjan, firstly, you have been warned multiple times by other editors, admins and crats on this site about about changing section headings. This is your last warning. Stop - or you will be permanently blocked! Since its inception, WikiIndex has always used the anglophile names for all countries. This has been the consensus since 2006; no other WikiIndex editor or reader has had issue with this. If you do not agree with the consensus and rules here on WikiIndex, go find another wiki which you do like!
Regarding the comment of Turkey on the main page, WikiIndex is a wiki site about all wikis. That includes ALL aspects of wikis - including access and censorship. If a country - not once - but TWICE blocks total access within its entire country - breaking a fundamental European Union law on Human Rights - it is perfectly acceptable to highlight such issues!
Regarding your comment on the Russia vs EU issue - if it is affecting any aspect of wiki - find the necessary information, and provide independent citations to verify said issue. Otherwise, that has no place here on WikiIndex. Kind regards Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 14:54, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

The Wiki Rule[edit]

TV Tropes used to have an article with this name. We might use it as a resource for further wikis to add. [1] [2] — preceding unsigned comment added by Max Sinister (talkcontribs) – 01:22, 15 October 2022‎ (UTC).

Why is it called a "rule"? --Manorainjan 09:00, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
I think it is just their naming conventions and their inclusion policy maybe? I confess I am not a follower of tropes of any kind. But the older version of that page is certainly a valid resource to add any missing wiki sites here on WikiIndex, so please go ahead and add them. Image error[edit]

Howdy! Thank you for the account approval. I'm not entirely sure what happened, but I uploaded a logo for Whiki, but it seems to have thrown an error on thumbnailing (that can be seen at here). When I tried to add it to the category article and sizing it down to 180px, it also seems to have thrown an error on the category page — any idea what is wrong with it? Original Authority (talk) 03:50, 25 November 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for reaching out. Sadly, we have some bugs in our software which cause problems with image display. If you look at Special:NewFiles, you will see that many file uploads fail to display thumbnail, and many will also fail to display at any manually selected pixel size other than their original upload size. Regrettably, I don't have server access, so I am not able to resolve this issue (and I have no expertise in in that area). My only suggestion is to manually resize logos to a maximum 300px and then upload again. Apologies for not being able to offer a better solution. Sean P, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crat / Stafftalk2HH 15:29, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
Ah, thank you! I've successfully uploaded a new version of the image — are you able to delete File:Whiki_Logo.png if possible, please? Original Authority (talk) 07:35, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
Now deleted. Thanks for your understanding. And welcome again. Sean P, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crat / Stafftalk2HH 14:26, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

Merge policy?[edit]

I checked the Althistory page, and it says that the page should be merged with another one. OK so far, a long time ago I did that at WP, and kinda remember it also involves merging the histories so nothing is lost. But what is WI's merging policy actually? It's still a red link...--Max Sinister (talk) 23:55, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

You are indeed correct that our merge policy is still a red link :-p Indeed, many basic policies were red links until the last few years! I will endeavour to make a start on that specific policy very soon.
The actual mechanism for Merging can only be carried out by sysops, due to the licensing need to retain edit history (and attribution) of both articles. Whilst the merge function is automated, it does need oversight - because not every edit can be merged - so discretion needs to be observed before actioning it.
Regarding the Althistory, and indeed all merge requests - sometimes, an editor may mark an article for merging (in good faith) - when in fact, it should remain in its own right. Aside any genuine but accidental duplicate entries - the most common reason for mistakenly tagging for a merge is when a wiki site has changed host by way of forking (and instead of creating a new article for the new host - an editor may simply update the original wiki site to the URLs of the new host!). The original wiki site, at its original host should be preserved as its own article here (annotating its status if necessary as abandoned or dead), and using a hat-note template to point to any new host. I notice that it was Ismael755 who added the merge tag to Althistory (I think I was on an extended wiki break at that time - personal issues), and he also added a new article Alternate Future Wiki. Glancing very briefly, it appears that both sites co-existed, though I guess they now are merged into one site on Wikia. There is also the same issue with Future and The Future Wiki!
In summary, if two articles have been created about an identical site on an identical host - the articles should be merged. But if they are or were two separate wiki sites (even if say on Wikia), but have themselves since merged (usually by Wikia), the article here referring to the 'original' (even if dead) should be retained - and ideally archived links found to support it.
Hope that makes sense! :) Sean P, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crat / Stafftalk2HH 00:36, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
OK, I'll have to think about this a bit. But thanks for stating the merge policy.--Max Sinister (talk) 04:42, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

Blocked me[edit]

Hello Sean,

Not sure what I was doing to look like a spammer, but thought I would ask: https://wikiindex.org/Special:Contributions/172.26.30.192 Best, MarkDilley

Hello Mark. Apologies if I somehow managed to block you. There is a bug somewhere in our software, and that IP address requested an account, which I approved. And they then created a blatant spam page - Ndifreke Ukpong - which clearly had nothing to do with any wiki!
Checking the block log for that IP, they are only restricted from editing as an anon IP editor. They are still able to create new accounts, or login from existing accounts. So genuine registered users should not be blocked!
Another guy on MediaWiki.org also commented that our software configuration has bugs which are preventing password recovery emails, and Karsten also concerned about our buggy config. Regards Sean P, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crat / Stafftalk2HH 12:52, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
Gotcha. Thanks for your responsiveness and clarity Sean, as always! What are the steps we can take to update/upgrade our software configuration? Best, MarkDilley
I am no expert on MediaWiki hosting, so I can not advise!
I am not sure if you have spoken with Ray recently - because Karsten Hoffmeyer (Kghbln) emailed me recently, and offered to host WikiIndex on his own ProWiki host, and upgrade the necessary software (though he never indicated any price!). Karsten would actually be a great fit for WikiIndex, because he is also an expert with Semantic MediaWiki. Sean P, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crat / Stafftalk2HH 14:16, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

Small trouble with a vandal[edit]

Hi! I'm a wiki editor for the Independent Fallout Wiki and I had to deal with a vandal on our page. Essentially, an anon edit posted links to something completely irrelevant to the subject matter, as well as posting misinformation that really had no relation to the article. They also dead-named on our admins.

I was curious if there's any counter-measured to prevent this? Thanks! C0NN1E (talk) 13:56, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

Hello C0NN1E, welcome to WikiIndex. I'm sorry for not noticing the vandalism. I now blocked the IP for one week, but if you notice anyone who is spamming or vandalising articles, please tag their user page or user talk page with either {{vandal}} or {{spammer}}. Best regards, and happy new year! Sean P, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crat / Stafftalk2HH 14:24, 2 January 2023 (UTC)
Hi again, Hoof Hearted! It looks like the same IP returned a week later trying to remove constructive edits on the same page. I marked their user page under the {{vandal}} template. C0NN1E (talk) 20:51, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

Wiki Farm name change procedure?[edit]

Howdy! I just wanted to check in to clarify someting. Whiki has changed names and is now known as Telepedia—what should I do with the article and categories, and the pages that follow, such as Whiki Meta Wiki. Should I create new articles and mark Whiki as dead, and add a hat note? Or is there some other procedure for this (such as merging, or editing the original article etc.) Just wanted to double check before making edits! :) --Original Authority (talk) 06:21, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi, and sorry for the delay in replying.
Do you have URLs for Telepedia? And do you know the rationale for the name change?
Depending on the reasons or cause of the name change, we would either redirect to their new name, or mark as dead and create new!  :-/ Sean P, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crat / Stafftalk2HH 21:24, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

Redirecting WikiIndex-dot-com URL to subpage[edit]

Hey, Hoof! I don't know if you're the right person to ask for this, but many old Fandom (Wikia) sites still have [[wikiindex:]] interwiki link set to http://wikiindex.com/$1. For examples, see cities.fandom (a.k.a. Cities Wiki), list.fandom (WikiLists) and the Star Trek wiki, memory-alpha.fandom (Memory Alpha).

The problem is, https://wikiindex.com/aaaa or any URL to dot-com with any subpage just redirects to the homepage (https://wikiindex.org). Thoughts on fixing how that domain redirection is set up? —AStranger195 (talk) 13:21, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

Hello, to get that issue fixed, you need to ask on Wikia Community Central (en) to get one of their Interwiki Administrators to update their global interwiki table - including updating many to https. That is unfortunately out of control of WikiIndex. Best regards Sean P, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crat / Stafftalk2HH 17:47, 24 March 2023 (UTC)
What about fixing it on your end, and fixing all legacy interwiki links in the process? Doesn't WikiIndex have control of the wikiindex.com domain? --AStranger195 (talk) 05:52, 25 March 2023 (UTC)
I am not sure about the Wikiindex dot com domain. Maybe you can email our owner, Raymond King, as he may still own the dot com domain.
As for Wikia or Fandom, they have zero interest in cooperation with external wiki sites. Indeed, Wikia removed many of the tools used for creating relationships between themselves and non-Wikia sites a long time ago! Sean P, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crat / Stafftalk2HH 15:07, 25 March 2023 (UTC)
I have control of the name, but don't have the technical skills. I'd be happy to give it a try if someone can make it easy for me. Raymond King | talk

Please see the message on the following talk page, adding this CSS code will fix the tab issue[edit]

MediaWiki talk:Vector.css

I can't edit it myself because I'm not an administrator. William Lupinacci (talk) 22:28, 16 June 2023 (UTC)

RMS Titanic Wiki‎s[edit]

Hi,

just worked on RMS Titanic Wiki‎ and created a template for its sister wikis. Please check it whether it's OK that way.

Also, I'm wondering about this website: Encyclopedia Titanica. Does this fit in here? It's an online database for a specific topic with a community, but OTOH, it doesn't seem to be a real wiki, esp. since it was started in 1996.--Max Sinister (talk) 00:54, 1 July 2023 (UTC)

The Titanic template is fantastic! Thank you. As for Encyclopedia Titanica, that does not use any known wiki software (from what I can ascertain), so it really has no place here. Regards, Sean P, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crat / Stafftalk2HH 15:49, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
You're welcome. I'll make a multi-language template for the James Bond wikis next.--Max Sinister (talk) 07:27, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
A James Bond template will be awesome, thanks. Sean P, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crat / Stafftalk2HH 11:24, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

Login problem[edit]

This month I got an odd login error: I wanted to log in, but got an error message that I had no cookies activated. My browser settings were the same as they are now, and as you can see, I am logged in. --Max Sinister (talk) 09:37, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

Which browser are you using? For me, when I use Safari on my Mac, I regularly get cookie warnings for sites which I know that I have already accepted, and it frequently logs me out of sites which I regularly use. I never have those issues when using Opera browser! Regards. Sean P, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crat / Stafftalk2HH 11:03, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

Do you know a wiki with a smart user community?[edit]

Somehow I don't feel satisfied with the various communities I'm a member of. You know about so many wikis. Can you recommend one to me which has science and/or fiction as a topic, and an intelligent user base? Maybe one with restricted access?

TIA, --Max Sinister (talk) 20:40, 18 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello, and apologies for late reply. Apart from trawling through Category:Science, it is difficult for me to make personal recommendations. SklogWiki is a high-level science wiki, run by a former WikiIndex editor. Psiram appears to be a quality site, its German language version is fairly active. RationalWiki (en) includes lots of science, as do the various Category:Uncyclopedias. Best regards, Sean P, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crat / Stafftalk2HH 11:36, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your suggestions. For SklogWiki I don't have the right background, and RationalWiki has many readworthy articles, but the userbase has detoriated IMO. Still thanks for Psiram, I'll have to look at it.--Max Sinister (talk) 02:59, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

Redirect Please[edit]

Please can you make this page https://wikiindex.org/Taerel_Worldbuilding_Wiki Redirect to Taerel Wiki and merge content as fitting please? 172.26.16.215 22:23, 5 March 2024 (UTC)

Are you OK, Sean?[edit]

For some weeks (it feels like it), I've tried to login, but the wiki was always down. That's why I wondered whether something had happened to you.--Max Sinister (talk) 21:30, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
