== How to deal with others ==
Telling someone "don't be a jerk" is generally wrong — especially if it's true. It upsets the other person and reduces the chance that they'll listen to what you say.
Focus on behaviour, not on individuals. Say what you want and why you want it. Say why you think the other person's behaviour is counterproductive. [[wp:WP:AGF|Assume good faith]] to the maximum extent possible. If you don't understand why someone is doing something, ask. Don't rush to complain until you are sure that good faith negotiations can't work. Understand before insisting on being understood.
Remember that your perception can be wrong. If the other person is writing in an unfamiliar language, or has a different cultural background, you may misunderstand their intentions.
Above all, be genuine. Don't ask questions when you know the answer. Don't say you want one thing if you want another. Don't try to persuade people of things that aren't true. Do not respond to jerkitude [[wp:Norm of reciprocity|in kind]], no matter how tempting it may be.

:::'''PA?''' Since you love [[wp:WP:LAWYER|wiki-lawyering]]: I didn't call you a jerk. I refuse to believe that you don't know better. You are absolutely playing dumb about how your behavior of harassing and deliberately provoking others is both real and detrimental to this site. ::Now, after reading it, I ask You, why You are pointing this to '''me'''?
:::"A common mistake of misguided advocacy is when a person appoints himself a mediator and proceeds with judging the sides by telling them whether they are right or wrong instead of helping the sides to better state their positions and to find common grounds. It is not uncommon that one side is indeed wrong, and in such a case a mediator begins to appear to take sides thus alienating the wrong side and triggering their defense instincts, further entrenching them against an amicable resolution."

:::'''Direction''' I am directing this to you because your behavior is the common denominator of the problems and that's also obviously by design. I'm not sure how this quotation is supposed to be relevant as I'm not self-appointed: I was given the position of an admin because others think I can be of value here. Others are questioning your value to the community due to your disposition. You can act childish about this and pretend like you are unimpeachable but the reality is that you make it a point to be obnoxious and abrasive to others, driving them away from the site. Are you aware of how to edit the copyright warning as shown at the footer of every page? Someone previously suggested [[MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning]], but its text looks nothing like what is shown in our footer. :'''No clue''' Your guess is as good as mine. Although there is definitely some overlap between users here and there (like Jason and Ray), I am not associated with .wiki at all. == Buggy software ==
Hi, have you noticed the current bugs in the WikiIndex software? I am constantly plagued by three separate (but may be related) issues. First, I regularly get a white page with 'database errors' (or similar wording), secondly, I consistently get a HTTP 500 error - on what seems to be large-ish articles/templates, and finally, it adamantly refuses to allow me any image file uploads.
:: | Have you noticed these? Do you have any ideas, or answers on how to fix it? :I have noticed the first two errors but not the last one (as I haven't tried to upload anything). Around the turn of the year, I was talking to Mark and Ray about taking over day-to-day maintenance of the site but that fell off as I got busy. Recently, my computer broke and very recently snapped in half, so that has also been a hiccup for me. I don't have access to the server so I can't do any real maintenance of the site (and whether or not I have the skill is an open question, too). I've never used [[wp:Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser|AutoWikiBrowser]] (AWB), so I can't comment, however, I suspect AWB would need specific configuration. The really funky thing about ReplaceText is once you have set it running, it will 'poll' before making changes (to prevent an [[edit conflict]]), and will pause itself, and restart automatically. == [[wikiFactor]] ==
: | Hope you are keeping busy! :-P
I | The [[wikiFactor]] (wF) issue . . . I'm sure we are all aware that both the entire [[:Category:Wikimedia Foundation|Wikimedia Foundation]] range of wikis, all of [[:Category:Wikia|Wika]], and any independent wiki running the latest versions of [[:Category:MediaWiki|MediaWiki]] (MW) can now no longer output page view data, and so we can no longer update their specific wF. However, other wiki engines can still output page views, and therefore wF data. Furthermore, there are still MANY independent wikis running MW that have not upgraded to the latest MW version, and are continuing to reliably output page view data. So, in line with our now established ethos of keeping dead, vanished wiki, it would be good if we can retain all wikiFactor data. It was for that very reason why I amended the boilerplates with – <code><nowiki><br>wikiFactor as of: 2012-MM-DD</nowiki></code> – to allow both page count and wikiFactor data to remain on our articles, and make it clear of the separate dates for both values. Our own [[WikiIndex]] article page illustrates this (though that page uses live, dynamic data for the page count and page count date). For articles that have had their wF data deleted, look back through its [[edit history]] to find required info.

== Wikipedia.org oddity ==
Hi Justin, you are obviously highly knowledgable regarding Wikipedia, so I hope you don't mind if I ask you a <cough> 'interesting' question. On the Alexa site for [https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/wikipedia.org Wikipedia.org], near the bottom of the page, it lists "Other Sites Owned". Numbers 1, 3, and 5 are explanatory, but 2 and 4 have . . . erm . . . raised my eyebrows! Number 2 (at time I viewed Alexa) was <nowiki>nekkid.info</nowiki> (<u>warning</u>: NOT suitable for work/school/minors etc) is a XXX p0rn site, and number 4 was <nowiki>searchbastard.com</nowiki> (now goes to a parking domain site).
So . . . is Alexa correct? Does Wikipedia actually own those two? If they do, I am guessing (though not defaming) Jimbo was the original owner. Does Wikipedia and / or the WMF have any need, or justification for owning those? My only guess is the potential revenue stream from number 2 - which might be a valid commercial reason, but is it ethical?
Do you fancy asking some questions in the appropriate places? Understand if not, though. Best. [[User:Hoof Hearted|Sean, aka <small>Hoof Hearted</small>]] • [[:Category:Active administrators of this wiki|Admin]] / [[WikiIndex:Bureaucrats|'Crat]] • <small>[[User talk:Hoof Hearted|talk2HH]]</small> 11:03, 10 December 2017 (PST)
:Ha. I don't know if you know about the history of the site but I imagine it's somehow related to Bomis: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bomis. That is a weird find... [[User:Koavf|Koavf]] ([[User talk:Koavf|talk]]) 12:24, 10 December 2017 (PST)
:''' | ::Wikipedia as such does not own anything at all. If some WP-thingy owns anything, it is the '''Wikimedia Foundation Inc.''' which is a non-profit organisation which has registered the domain wikipedia.org and similar domains. Besides this entry on Alexa, there is no indication that WMF owns searchbastard.com and the like. It is likely, that those domains where owned by the company Bomis Inc. (or the people who owned the company) which also registered Bomis.com. WMF was founded by the people of Bomis. There is neither need nor use or indication, that those domains should or would have been transferred to the WMF as well. Anyway no domain owns any other domain. Therefore, if Alexa states any "owned by" than Alexa should state, who is the registrar of wikipedia.org in the first place, which Alexa does not do. Even the term "to own" is wrong. Therefore this "information" of "Other Sites Owned" is questionable by design. At best, there could have been a moment in time when wikipedia.org and some of the other mentioned domains have been registered by the same institution. But this institution has not been and is not the WMF. The "ownerships" of the other domains are heavily obfuscated. I think, what this Alexa entry rally proves is the inaccuracy of Alexa because it is so obviously wrong and about such a prominent domain, that Alexa staff could not convincingly excuse it by "we can not control every little detail in our database...". They do not control any detail at all. It proves that Alexa is run by weasels. Their data collecting processes are so overly automated that blatant inaccuracy is guaranteed. We know pretty well how much work it makes to keep track with ever changing details about internet entities. We can not do it ourselves, not enough manpower. If Alexa would try to present correct data, they would have to more than triple their staff and would not be able to gain any profits for the investors. How to deal with others[edit]
Assume good faith to the maximum extent possible.
Do not respond to jerkitude in kind, no matter how tempting it may be.
Exerpt from: here. You do not follow Your own rules. --Manorainjan 09:12, 25 January 2017 (PST)
- I'm certainly not coy. And You should not call me a jerk either. It would be going against wp:Wikipedia:No personal attacks wouldn't it? --Manorainjan 09:19, 25 January 2017 (PST)
- PA? Since you love wiki-lawyering: I didn't call you a jerk. I refuse to believe that you don't know better. You are absolutely playing dumb about how your behavior of harassing and deliberately provoking others is both real and detrimental to this site. I'm telling you to stop now and if I see more instances of you harassing other users, I'll block you. It's not hard to ask you to be a decent person and this is a conversation that we've been having for years. Koavf (talk) 09:25, 25 January 2017 (PST)
I do not love what You have linked to, not even knew it. Your link does not lead to any specific page/artikle. Correct Your link, if anything is to be said by this! --Manorainjan 09:33, 25 January 2017 (PST)
- Exhibit A The page is a redirect (and you obviously know what that is) leading to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikilawyering. Stop being so abrasive. Koavf (talk) 11:03, 25 January 2017 (PST)
- Now, after reading it, I ask You, why You are pointing this to me?
- "A common mistake of misguided advocacy is when a person appoints himself a mediator and proceeds with judging the sides by telling them whether they are right or wrong instead of helping the sides to better state their positions and to find common grounds. It is not uncommon that one side is indeed wrong, and in such a case a mediator begins to appear to take sides thus alienating the wrong side and triggering their defense instincts, further entrenching them against an amicable resolution."
- This is exactly what You are used to do. Now I got a link for You to read it carefully: wp:Psychological projection Manorainjan 11:16, 25 January 2017 (PST)
- Direction I am directing this to you because your behavior is the common denominator of the problems and that's also obviously by design. Koavf (talk) 11:20, 25 January 2017 (PST)
- Now, after reading it, I ask You, why You are pointing this to me?
Do You understand the nature of projection, even remotely? Manorainjan 11:24, 25 January 2017 (PST)
- Projection Yes. Do you understand what I'm telling you about your behavior and how it is inappropriate? Koavf (talk) 11:34, 25 January 2017 (PST)
- You are not asking for understanding. You are asking for obedience. --Manorainjan 02:14, 26 January 2017 (PST)

- Weird. The tab was open in my browser... I'll block them if they cause more problems but until then, I don't think it's necessary. If we did that, you would have been blocked here based on what you did at Ward's Wiki. Koavf (talk) 12:03, 11 February 2017 (PST)
- Also, regarding restricting edit rights by namespace is possible, yes. For instance, the MediaWiki namespace. Koavf (talk) 12:17, 11 February 2017 (PST)
- But User and their Talk would be the same namespace. I'm afraid that would not help. Maybe as parameter of a user-box-template? --Manorainjan 12:35, 11 February 2017 (PST)
- No, they would not. I'm sorry but you do not understand this at all--user namespace and user talk namespace are not the "same namespace". In MediaWiki,
User
is ns-2 andUser talk
is ns-3. Just like how theMediaWiki
namespace (ns-8) is restricted and theMediaWiki talk
namespace (ns-9) is not. Notice how you can post to MediaWiki talk:Sidebar but you cannot modify MediaWiki:Sidebar. Koavf (talk) 13:04, 11 February 2017 (PST)- Right, now while You mention it, I remember. I was just recently reading about the namespaces while I was setting up my own wiki ;-) So it would be well possible IP-protect all user pages. So I suggest You do that. It will make Your life easier. My pages are protected anyway ;-) And I can continue to work on my wiki :-) --Manorainjan 13:19, 11 February 2017 (PST)

Guten Tag[edit]
Now, you made me come here, thanks for that, looks interesting. Dan Koehl (talk) 12:44, 14 February 2017 (PST)
- Danke und Willkommen! As you can maybe see, I am staff here. Although I didn't found the project (with Mark, Ray, Ted, etc.) I've been here since close to the beginning. I'm slowly taking the lead on some day-to-day things here but Mark still checks in regularly (as you can see). We have a few helpful admins, too. I hope you have the time and energy to add something here as well. Thanks, Dan. Koavf (talk) 13:04, 14 February 2017 (PST)
Buggy software[edit]
Hi, have you noticed the current bugs in the WikiIndex software? I am constantly plagued by three separate (but may be related) issues. First, I regularly get a white page with 'database errors' (or similar wording), secondly, I consistently get a HTTP 500 error - on what seems to be large-ish articles/templates, and finally, it adamantly refuses to allow me any image file uploads.
Have you noticed these? Do you have any ideas, or answers on how to fix it? Regards, Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 07:40, 29 April 2017 (PDT)
- I have noticed the first two errors but not the last one (as I haven't tried to upload anything). Koavf (talk) 07:51, 29 April 2017 (PDT)
- Ouch - your computer issue sounds painful!! :-P
- I presume Brandon still has access to the server? Do you know how to contact him off-wiki? Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 08:08, 29 April 2017 (PDT)
- Brandon does, yes but 1.) I do not know him and 2.) it's my understanding that he doesn't really have availability. :/ You can certainly try or try via Ray but that's all I have at the moment. I want to get back into WikiIndex but I'm going to have to get a computer first (currently using my work machine). I know that's disappointing but it's all I have at the moment. Koavf (talk) 08:19, 29 April 2017 (PDT)
- Brandon found the issue tonight, and has fixed it. We had an errant backup script going which ate up all of the disk space, very sorry -- should be ok now. This summer we're going to put some more time into it to with the goal of migrating to a stand alone implementation of MediaWiki so it's more stable and can be maintained by anyone with MW skills. outdated DIFF-Links[edit]
Since wikiindex.com does not work any more, all old DIFF-links from that time do not work any more. http://www.wikiindex.com/index.php?title=User_talk:Ray_King&curid=4230&diff=33754&oldid=33748&rcid=35220 Can You make a BOT that changes com to wiki on talk pages? --Manorainjan 07:15, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
- That doesn't need a bot, it just needs the Special:ReplaceText feature. Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 07:39, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
- I see, the Extension:Replace Text would do I think. --Manorainjan 08:38, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
- I was surprised, that Sean did it in a minute, because I thought, the definition would require some regex and therefore a little more thinking. On purpose I wrote about diff-links. There are a number of other mentioning of the .com, which are not diff-links and where the change does not make sense, rather distorts the meaning. Example. --Manorainjan 09:54, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
- Special:ReplaceText is a fantastic extension, very easy to use, and very 'targetable'! Specifically, when I set it to run, I selected only Talk pages in all namespaces. I've never used AutoWikiBrowser (AWB), so I can't comment, however, I suspect AWB would need specific configuration. The really funky thing about ReplaceText is once you have set it running, it will 'poll' before making changes (to prevent an edit conflict), and will pause itself, and restart automatically. Obviously, nothing is perfect, and for the rare individual examples as highlighted by Manor, a simple undo - with the reason for reverting in the edit summary. Love it for its simplicity and effectiveness! Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 10:33, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
Seems You did not check the other replacements: http://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=WikiIndex_talk:Add_a_Wiki&diff=prev&oldid=197977 Basically not simply wikiindex.com was to be changed in wikiindex.org, but ://wikiindex.com/index.php would have to be the search phrase. Manorainjan 12:01, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
- Fixed your latest find. Your idea of using /index.php might not work properly - because that is only (normally) used in URLs, and not rendered wikitext. I am fairly confident Special:ReplaceText works only on rendered wikitext, and not actual URLs. Could be wrong though. I need to think more on this. I think it only changed 37-ish articles, so not a huge job to check them all. Did you find any it missed out? Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 12:19, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
- When You look at the example which I provided originally and how the extension changed it: http://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=User_talk:Aussiepete&diff=197974&oldid=33758 then how do You get the idea, that replace text would work on the rendered text (only)? --Manorainjan 12:41, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
- You are actually correct. All diffs work by using a full external link URL. I forgot diffs weren't wikilinks. Have you found any more? Appreciate your help, thank-you. :-)) Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 17:10, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
- As You can see in this Example, diffs can be noted down without mentioning any URL and are, as such independent from the domain name. Those notations would not need any replacement after a change in domain name. So You can see, that not all diffs work "by using a full external link URL" Manorainjan 17:56, 9 May 2017 (PDT)
User rights[edit]
Hi JAK, good to see you online!
Can you please make a couple of changes to members of the staff user group? Jason really ought to be removed - I'm struggling to find the rationale as to why he was added. And can you please add me? I am trying to look through some of the backend stuff to work out why we still have these annoying bugs. Don't worry - if I do not understand something, I will just look, but leave as is without making any changes.
Best, Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 15:17, 26 May 2017 (PDT)
- Sean, I can happily add you as staff but I don't think it will give you as much access as you would like. Ultimately, what both you and I need are access to the true backend on the server. I was not ever privy to who Jason is nor why he was added as staff but I know that he has something to do with the .wiki TLD and so does Ray. Maybe they are friends? Business partners? Either way, he's not active, so I've removed him as staff and added you. Koavf (talk) 15:40, 26 May 2017 (PDT)
- Brandon CS Sanders is another inactive member of staff group. --185.182.81.39 09:43, 28 May 2017 (PDT)

Hello, in Jason's contributions there are many spam redirects, can you delete them? --185.182.81.39 09:42, 28 May 2017 (PDT)
Manorainjan's behaviour[edit]
Hello. Just asking you this question: can you warn Manorainjan? Because I told him that he, among with Rock-O-Jello and Amanda, was an active user and they all deserved a promotion. He attacked me saying that I am part of a "crew" against him. --13Reasons (talk) 08:21, 4 June 2017 (PDT)
- I can see why you're upset but I don't think this warrants any intervention, honestly. Just step away and move on--he's going to think what he thinks. Koavf (talk) 13:45, 4 June 2017 (PDT)
Name change[edit]
Can you change my nickname to CcZc? Thanks in advance, --13Reasons (talk) 02:59, 23 June 2017 (PDT)
- Means: "There is no 'crew' in this wiki" that You are the only one, who opens one account after another, applies for new names, asks for being blocked or unblocked, blanks and undoes ones own user page back and forth? — preceding unsigned comment added by Manorainjan (talk • contribs) – .
- Manorainjan, as you are constantly harassing me, on and off wiki, I am leaving forever. But remember: this site is in very bad conditions, and will soon die. And you are the only one responsible of this. Like Koavf said, "you are a consistently rude and provocative person and it drives away other editors". --13Reasons (talk) 06:18, 23 June 2017 (PDT)
- Just for matters of curiosity: Where in the world did we meet off wiki? Tell me, so I know whom I "harassed" there. ::::Even though this site makes no real progress, it is not in a bad condition at all. And it will certainly not die soon or any time soon or in in any kind of near future within the short span of Your attention. That is, because Ray is taking care of it. And Ray is the direct opposite of You, he is refined, mature, highly intelligent and absolutely trustworthy. How could a kid that goes from "block my account for an infinite amount of time!" (BTW: q.e.d ;-) back and forth within 4 minutes have any mentionable impact on this wiki? This is not Your usual My Little Pony playground. --Manorainjan 09:54, 23 June 2017 (PDT)
- I have no problems saying that I am Hal. You sent some messages to me on Wikipedia some time ago. How could a rude troll like you have any mentionable impact on this wiki? I made more than 100 pages here and improved many others. How come you have so much respect for Ray, but behave badly with Mark, another admin? Anyway, Ray left the site a long time ago and sometimes makes minor edits to pages and user rights (he also left the Wiki.Wiki project, in which I demonstrated the incompetence of old staff member Jason, who got demoted). I don't understand why you think you are a good presence for this website when you're the one destroying it... remember your one week block. --13Reasons (talk) 11:07, 23 June 2017 (PDT)
- There is not even a user page for 13Reasons on en-wikipedia. So, what are You talking about? Why those deliberately nebulous statements? You know pretty well one can set links to any wiki incident. When You are not using exact links, it means You try to lie about something. --Manorainjan 11:45, 23 June 2017 (PDT)
wikiFactor[edit]
Hope you are keeping busy! :-P
The wikiFactor (wF) issue . . . I'm sure we are all aware that both the entire Wikimedia Foundation range of wikis, all of Wika, and any independent wiki running the latest versions of MediaWiki (MW) can now no longer output page view data, and so we can no longer update their specific wF. It was for that very reason why I amended the boilerplates with – <br>wikiFactor as of: 2012-MM-DD
– to allow both page count and wikiFactor data to remain on our articles, and make it clear of the separate dates for both values. Our own WikiIndex article page illustrates this (though that page uses live, dynamic data for the page count and page count date). For articles that have had their wF data deleted, look back through its edit history to find required info.
What are your thoughts? Best. Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 11:32, 14 November 2017 (PST)
- I started this topic long ago Category_talk:Active_administrators_of_this_wiki#wF_asking_from_others_what_we_do_not_provide_ourselves.3F We just need to install the extension. --Manorainjan 12:01, 14 November 2017 (PST)
- Well, I don't really see the value in retaining WikiFactor information if it's woefully out of date. All this really says is something about the relatively popularity of certain pages five or six years ago... If a site has some metric to measure it within the past (e.g.) 24 months, that may be useful but at some point, it's just a relic. Koavf (talk) 21:16, 14 November 2017 (PST)
- What about installing the extension on WikiIndex? Manorainjan 02:42, 15 November 2017 (PST)
- Ray gave me staff permissions with the goal of having me be able to access the server directly to change setting in MediaWiki but that has yet to happen and Brandon is MIA. Koavf (talk) 11:21, 15 November 2017 (PST)
- Don't worry. Installing an extension is mostly rather easy. I did that also on my own wiki. As soon as You have set up FTP successfully is is a matter of minutes. --Manorainjan 11:32, 15 November 2017 (PST)
- So, what is the progress in this matter? Just now I added T4-Wiki a wiki of 2006 that is indeed using wF (of 119). It is using MW version 1.25.1, higher than ours. So, that should not pose a problem really. --Manorainjan 04:45, 5 December 2017 (PST)

Wikipedia.org oddity[edit]
Hi Justin, you are obviously highly knowledgable regarding Wikipedia, so I hope you don't mind if I ask you a <cough> 'interesting' question. On the Alexa site for Wikipedia.org, near the bottom of the page, it lists "Other Sites Owned". Numbers 1, 3, and 5 are explanatory, but 2 and 4 have . . . erm . . . raised my eyebrows! Number 2 (at time I viewed Alexa) was nekkid.info (warning: NOT suitable for work/school/minors etc) is a XXX p0rn site, and number 4 was searchbastard.com (now goes to a parking domain site).
So . . . is Alexa correct? Does Wikipedia actually own those two? If they do, I am guessing (though not defaming) Jimbo was the original owner. Does Wikipedia and / or the WMF have any need, or justification for owning those? My only guess is the potential revenue stream from number 2 - which might be a valid commercial reason, but is it ethical?
Do you fancy asking some questions in the appropriate places? Understand if not, though. Best. Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 11:03, 10 December 2017 (PST)
- Ha. I don't know if you know about the history of the site but I imagine it's somehow related to Bomis: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bomis. That is a weird find... Koavf (talk) 12:24, 10 December 2017 (PST)
- Wikipedia as such does not own anything at all. If some WP-thingy owns anything, it is the Wikimedia Foundation Inc. which is a non-profit organisation which has registered the domain wikipedia.org and similar domains. Manorainjan 16:55, 10 December 2017 (PST)
- Manorainjan – you had better go and tell Alexa that they got the internet wrong!!!
- Koavf — I was only following a link that Manor posted! Thanks for the update. :-) Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 18:40, 10 December 2017 (PST)

Hi koavf, I nearly gave up on WikiIndex! Glad it has been fixed. I noticed you held one of the new account requests from Dominica.
