biowikifarm.net is a shared technical service platform used by multiple projects or organisations for non-commercial dissemination of biological, and especially biodiversity research open-content data. The project is funded by the European Union (EU), and operates through a partnership of universities and research institutions, primarily based in Germany.
The actual service operation of the biowikifarm is guaranteed by a service sponsorship consortium, consisting of:
- ViBRANT — hardware ownership, primary administration
- Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum in Berlin — infrastructure support
- Staatliche Naturwissenschaftliche Sammlungen Bayerns (SNSB) — long-term infrastructure maintenance guarantee
- International Society for Pest Information (ISPI) — administrative support
- Pl@ntNet — administrative support
The goal of the service sponsorship is to establish good service quality and a long-term infrastructure that goes beyond the goals of individual and sometimes short-lived projects. Each service sponsor keeps a backup copy of the entire setup (currently a single virtual machine). Furthermore, each service sponsor has access to all necessary security information (virtual machine backup access, root access for extended backup, domain name management access). By sharing the responsibility in the operation, the service sponsors further express their interest in building trust in the community, that a single service sponsor will not exert control over the content authors of projects beyond what is legally required (e. g., removal of illegal content).
The biowikifarm project is funded under the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement n°261532 (Virtual Biodiversity Research and Access Network for Taxonomy – ViBRANT). It was built within the ViBRANT EU FP7 project by JKI and the BGBM. As of early 2018, the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (MfN) in Berlin, Germany (management and hosting), the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem (BGBM) (programming, technical support), the IT Center of the Bavarian Natural History Collections (SNSB IT Center) in Munich, Germany (guarantee for long-term online availability), and Plazi (legal responsibility and legal clearances) form a management consortium. In addition, several projects and individuals using the biowikifarm provide a significant contribution to the management of the wiki farm.
All wiki sites hosted on the biowikifarm use the ubiquitous MediaWiki wiki engine, along with the Semantic MediaWiki suite of extensions. The textual content of all wikis are released under the Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) license. The biowikifarm also operates a shared media repository, enabling synergies between all partners in re-using media content.
