In the wiki world, a user is is the term given to anyone who edits, develops, or merely only reads a wiki site.
In the case of Wikipedia, there are many users who only read the wiki encyclopedia, but do not participate in creating or amending content. In closed wiki sites, readers may be required to be editors. In a restricted editing wiki site, such as Scholarpedia, it is assumed that there will be many more readers than editors, but all are considered users.
In the case of all MediaWiki-powered wiki sites, 'users' are classed as a specific user group, typically being the entry-level, but fundamental core group of people who create the content on the wiki.
The term 'user' is a technical term for people who built the internet or other software, but some folks believe it is not a good nor friendly term for outfacing public. Participant, or almost any other term for a person is preferred.
User: is also a namespace on MediaWiki-powered wiki sites, and also on some other wiki engines. Its associated talk page namespace is User talk:.
